View Full Version : Gallery Picks for the Week Ending January 28, 2008
'Gallery Picks' is just a bunch of us giving a heads up to what we have seen during the past seven days at RFF that we like.
There's no membership requirement, no criteria (except past seven days), no voting, no limit to the number of photos we mention, and everybody mentioned is a winner.
Anybody can start the thread on a Monday morning.
Anybody can join in.
National Gallery, London (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78007&cat=fav) by joshuar:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/gallery/16784/U16784I1201013364.SEQ.0.jpg
There's been a lot of good constructivist, abstract and highly geometrical photography this week. It's one of these things I have a perverse liking for. This shot was one of the best.
fm136 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78431&cat=fav) by petronius:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/data/500/fm136.jpg
And so is this. Very good geometry work with the shadows.

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/gallery/9358/U9358I1200941098.SEQ.0.jpg
As far as I'm concerned this was probably the best picture this week. A great moment, excellent execution, amazing visual expression with the raindrops and the faces. Outstanding.
Crazy Paving, Crazy Painting (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78397&cat=fav) by Pitxu:
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/data/500/oly-037.jpg
I like this a lot. Nice textures and good colour contrast. Everything radiates this cozy kind of shabbiness. The fact that there's no two parallel lines in the picture would have distracted had the sujet been anything else, but here it works nicely. We see too little colour work on RFF.

http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/gallery/3436/U3436I1201007869.SEQ.0.jpg
Non-decisive moment with a mini-story. One of the better people shots I've seen in a while.
Our Man In Tangier hit the spot several times this week:
The Porter (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=77911&cat=fav&limit=last14) - Umpteen comments and several picks in this thread can't be wrong.
Gate (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=77996&cat=fav&limit=last14) - Abstract imagery at it's best. What is it, where is it can I have one?
Grid (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showfull.php?photo=78286) - Art from the mundane
Just three of many I could mention.
Two from Joshuar:
National Gallery London (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78007&cat=fav&limit=last7) - Whenever I try a shot like this it always looks rubbish. Joshuar pulls it off!
nana (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78010) - A smashing personal portrait.
Telewatt:
Reduced (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78064&cat=fav&limit=last7) - Very witty and a nice composition.
Spain 44 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78183&cat=fav&limit=last7) - Right time, right place. You wouldn't catch me that close.
1947 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78234&cat=fav&limit=last7) - Monumental. This should be 10 feet high.
Alex Chung: HoiZhu Bridge (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78088), GuangZhou, China @ Jan 2008
- More than a touch of the Cartier-Bressons IMHO, Triffic "decisive moment".
Pitxu: Shepherds (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78176) - Well, you wouldn't want to be left with an ugly one would you? :D It's a nice slice of rural life captured in a strong composition.
Pitxu: Back Street (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78259) - Completely timeless. Alternative "Street Photography".
Thanks Alkis and Richard for the mentions; much appreciated.

Thanks to all who mentioned my photos!
Its interesting that the chosen photos always are different from those I would consider as my best.
From the mass of good photographs this week I picked these:
••Skid Row from Hermann Abdullah: The aesthetics of a catastrophe in a perfect color composition!
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78304&cat=fav
••The art to make containers art by OurManInTangier.

••Abandoned by lamarv916: I like the surrealistic touch and the great tones

••Exit by kbg32: A life shot as it should be: Feels as if I was climbing behind them.

Jon, Lazar & Alkis, Many thanks for the mentions!!!;)
Our own "Celebrity Snapper":
Leitao and Sandra (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78109) - Humour and humanity. My eye just drifts there, I can't help it!
Lisbon to Dakar (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78571) - Happenstance, or patient waiting Jon? Either way its a winner.
This series just gets better and better. How do you manage to see through the view-finder with that permanent twinkle in your eye?
Pitxu, thanks for mentioning.
If I had to pick one most striking image from last week, that would be Time To Move On (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=77934) by adonf.
Petronius: img884 (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78308) - The colour makes this for me. Another good spot by an artist who can pick up on the extraordinary amidst the mundane.
Shac: Putting On Socks (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78343) - Touching, tender, great grey tones... and what eye contact!
rxmd: Tango (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78579) - Music and movement. The graininess of this adds so much.
..and finally for this week......
lZr: Downtown Moment (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=78094) - This is a truly awe inspiring image, I love it.

Lisbon to Dakar - I was in the right place at the right time. Actually I'd gone to photograph the rally cars which were due to pass. But the rally was cancelled at the last minute, and this guy on a bike came by instead.
Thank you for your comment about the series. I'm enjoying the recent 'people' photos more and more rather than the earlier 'grotty wall' photos.

Important documentary picture reminding me of a world I would rather like to forget while I shouldn't. I do not know how the photographer achieved any access at all to the surroundings, but I assume his field of manoeuvre was rather narrow, and nevertheless he came out with a well composed picture.

BTW, how did you manage to attach a pic from the gallery?
I only just worked it out.
Go to the Gallery (or My Favorites) and click on the thumbnail to get the full size original.
Then drag the full size photo to your desktop.
Next type your message, and click 'Go Advanced' to attach the photo from your desktop to the message in the usual manner.
Finally drag the photo from your desktop to your trash, so you're not storing somebody's photo.
That's how it works for me on Mac OSX.
To include the full size photo for Windows, do as Jon said to see the full size of the photo (on white background. You must be sure the jpg suffix in the address line is visible).
Then copy the http address (Ctrl+C) and paste it (Ctrl+V) in your Reply post. You will see the full size photo

Thank you.
I've spent some time trying (using the Mac equivalent keystrokes) and cannot get it to work.
When I see the full size photo at RFF there is no jpg file extension, and if I copy that address and paste it into a post I just get the address, not the photo.
On the other hand if I drag the photo from RFF to my desktop then I can see a jpg extension. But this time if I paste that into the post I just get the address of the photo on my own computer.
What am I doing wrong?
Hi Jon,
when you see the full size photo at RFF, you probably have all the gallery-related stuff and links and so on still around it, so the address you're copying is that of the gallery page, not of the photo itself.
Try to right-click on the photo (if you have a right mouse button, otherwise click on it while pressing the Control button) and see if in the menu that opens you have either a "Copy Image Address" or "Show this image" option (or something like that). Copy Image Address will obviously give you the image address in the clipboard, while Show Image will display only the image so that you can copy its address with the .jpg extension from the browser's address bar.
Then paste this address into the post at RFF. I normally use the little postcard icon, between the "link" and "quotation" icons in the RFF message editor.

The address looks correct. If you want to display this image instead of having a link to its address, you'll have to either put the address between [іmg] tags:
http-and-all-the-stuff-belinging-to-the-address.jpg
Or click the yellow postcard-like icon, with the mountains and the sun in it, and paste the address in the box that opens.
The [іmg] tags give me this:

Thank you for your kind assistance.
My little post card button is not working, nor are any of the others nearby.
But an IMG photo_address.jpg /IMG with square brackets around each tag solved the problem.
Il try it:http://www.rangefinderforum.com/rffgallery/gallery/2130/U2130I1201073206.SEQ.0.jpg
Well, this seems to work, but it was a bit "suck it and see" to find the .jpg name & directory structure. Right click or Ctrl/Click didnt bring up the dialog bow so I had a guess at /photopost/data/data/500/... If all pix in the gallery are in this directory it should work into the future.
Thanks Mick for mentioning

Very nice and expressive. I ask myself if this image could be so strong in BW.

Another great one, although here the "convergencia" stuff is for me of secondary importance, an additive let's say. All in all, this is an image for me to learn. This week you have been excelling. These are the kind of pictures absolutely born from the mind of the photographer.

I was to say this is one of yours I like most. But after reading your answer to the folks commenting this pic, I am in doubt about who is better, the photographer or the writer.
Cheers and I look forward to get my portion too !

Great facial expression, great lines, great chiaroscuro, great framing and a deep sense of true image.
Of course the soft areas do not hurt either.

I like this pic for its varied facial expression, each one interesting by itself, the crowded detail both at the background and foreground, and no doubt - that Lenin niece at the right. Much athmosphere here. Great disorganization arising interest.

I have no words to express how cute is this tenderness arising image. Flawless composition and execution. I just don't remember when I have see any animal portrayed so cute as this one.
