Hi all,

Im posting this on behalf of my friend who lives in Israel. Anyway, he has had a canon L series lens (17-40mm) for a few years now, and he noticed after his flight back to Israel that the front element of his lens.

To me it looks like maybe the coatings on the lens are seperating... but I am not sure.

If it is the coatings, what options does he really have to get the lens fixed?

It is a canon L glass lens, and unfortunately it only has a 1 year warranty to it. He bought it about three or four years ago I think?

If anyone can help I (and he obviously) would be extremely thankful.

Thanks guys,

Jonathan

I guess he should take it to a competent canon repair shop if it's not simply dirt. Worst case the front element has to be changed.

Looks like a bit of solid matter to me too. If pictures have not been noticeably affected after its appearance, perhaps your friend could just ignore it.

If it needs repair, he can send it to a Canon Service Center and get an estimate, then have it repaired.

It looks like coating separation, as you suspected. If it is under warranty, they should "most likely" replace the front element. If it is not under warranty, the cost to repair it may be prohibitive. In this case, I sould just blacken that portion of the glass.

as suggested, go into Canon and have them look at it. Decide after you get their prognosis. Ive dealt with Canon customer service in about 5 or 6 countries, and all have been pleasant experiences given the circumstances.
