View Full Version : Kiev and Contax ... my fault
I have just seen the closed thread on the '' Kontax '' dee-bacle .
As I missed it and started it please let me apologise .
Look guys and gals [ and the rest of us ] - I have an autistic glitch where , a bit like a tic , my head goes through all the krazee permutations of words and phrases
It's not fun at all but , it's go under of go with tic .
It was just a bl...y pun for Koodness sake !
I apologise unreservedly to anyone who was / is offended by it , and to poor Ruben who happened to pick up on it
I have had so much support for my ravings here , including my fascination for poor ID stolen Zorkis and Feds - my '' Leica - likes '' , or the imaginative OTT wartime ''Leicas '' from mika @ moscowphoto = '' mika - mouse '' cameras ... naturally .
I prefer you all to have a giggle at the absurdity -
or just wonder if I am simply krazeee [ I have letters to prove it ] PLEASE talk to me , if I mess up , 'cos I am not good at people , and rules .
dee-satrous as ever .

I didn't see the thread, but I too enjoy your posts Dee.So fear not,and keep them coming:)
Brian.
One of the things I like about this forum is we don't all sit around with our tea and scones smiling sweetly at each other as we skim through our rule books!
When it gets a little, shall we say heated, the mods leap in and shut it down ... a little too early these days IMO.:p
It's life Dee and as said your posts are fascinating ... so no recriminations needed. :)
Dee, it's a non-issue, that got blown out of all proportion and then made worse by hair-trigger moderation.
A storm in a Dee-cup ;)
Carry on as you are!
Regards,
Bill
Thanks for posting Dee
PLEASE talk to me , if I mess up , 'cos I am not good at people , and rules .
That sounds better than any rule and pretty good for dealing with folks too.

Moderators--
Let us not discourage partisanship. People like Ruben bring their passions to this wonderful art/hobby/pastime and can't be faulted if they voice enthusiasm for their loves.
My first "good" 35mm camera was a Contax IIIa borrowed from my grandmother. She and it are long gone, and since then I've used Leicas, but based on the enthusiasm of Kontax-ists like Ruben I've plunged into Kiev ownership. The idea that you can have a classic 35mm camera with a great lens for about $75, and produce great results, amazes me, as it clearly does Ruben. Naturally, there are those who disagree with the whole concept and regard only the German version as respectable.
I hope that in a forum where we are joined by our passions we can find room for passionate debate, so long as it doesn't get too personal--lest we scare off the very people we hope to attract.

passion has nothing to do with it and neither does debate...it rarely has anything to do with what is said...it almost always has to do with how it is said.
Dee, You have nothing to apologize for. I found the forum Ruben started quite interesting. Thats one thing I love about Ruben. He has a way of starting a thread and you know it's going to be informative plus intertaining.
Tempest in a Dee-cup. :) I like that.

I couldn't agree more. I can only repeat what Joe and Ralph have said. I have not seen a thread closed because of what was said no matter how heated the debate. In every case, it was a matter of how it was said. Passion can be good and debate can be fun. However, it stops being fun when it gets personal and members start attacking each other rather than the ideas.

Absolutely. Internet forums are a regular source of amusement for me.
Keep posting, dee. I enjoy reading what you have to say as much as I enjoy using my "Frankenstein Kievs".
Dee,
You certainly didn't do anything you need to apologize for. Personally, I didn't enjoy the tone of that thread very much, but you didn't start it -- Ruben did. We are all responsible for our own posts, but have no control over the actions of others. Keep doing what you do!

I fully identify with the whole abovequoted message, and I myself didn't enjoy the tone of my opening thread at the time of writing, nor my subsequents replyies.
Since then till now I have not stopped thinking about what happened since the very begining of the whole story, when I wrote a very polite thread explaining why and when I intend to use the term "kontax". And what happened, from my viewpoint, is of interest. It was about an escalating dialogue among deaf. The more I and others used the word 'kontax' the more others felt disturbed. The more others defended themselves I started to mis-interprete it and got insulted.
I have been deaf by not perceiving, even at my best moments of addressing Contax owners along past months, with my best intentions, that the very term "Kontax" is insultive to them. Or if you want it in finer grain. although I did perceive some kind of disliking by them of the term, I was not sensible enough to deeper think what is disturbing them.
I say today "their legitimate pride", instead of my wrong reference about "snobism". I think there is a lot of simplyfication, and plain narrow thinking when I used the term "snobism".
We humans simply happen to see things from different angles and see different things when looking from the same hole. Here is the key in my opinion. I should be ready to accept disagreement and still feel my fellow RFF member as a fellow RFF member.
Couples, kids, nations diagree. But they all disagree in different languages - hence the source of the misunderstanding, or conflict, and I refer here to the personal level too when I say disagreement in different languages.
It is human, it happens, and had I perceived it earlier I would spare that whole thread, or at least smoothen its nails a lot.
Cheers,
Ruben
PS
As I wrote the above at a small space time during work, I had no opportunity to add two very important things to my opinion.
Although people disagree being the problem they disagree with different meanings in their mind, there are two behaviours most of us do perceive, and they are beyond the meaning: the area of feelings. Most of us feel when slapped and feel when kissed, so to speak.
It is not by accident that after so long thinking it was this thread Dee opened, that gave me the key to my questions. It was due to Dee at his opening post giving us a great kiss, through his humble attitude,
You are a great folk Dee, you really are.

Ruben,
What a thoughtful reply. Your consideration and humanity show through. These qualities, along with your passion for Kievs and photography are what make you such an asset to our forum.
Not relating directly to the above, when I have doubts about the appropriateness of a post, I always try to apply this rule of Mark Twain's:
"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt. " :)

Taken from the above post:
But I just couldn't see the point of keeping "the copy" while I have two items of "the original". Just a matter of logics.
So with that above said I must ask myself "Why would I want to purchase an expensive Contax when my $40 Kiev (with lens) and my $19 Fed 2 (with lens) is just as capable as producing an image as you see above?" Just as good of an example of Logics?
And a Kiev for a training camera? heh, heh, heh.
Ahh , Yes. We all have choices and for many different reasons.
John
It's lot easier being the fool - you learn a lot more by being overlooked ...
I Always like Rubens Rambles - and he would NEVER deliberately offend anyone .
i am still taking in f2eyelevel's post ... but i get the point of '' it's noe possible , at not exhoerbitant expense to enjoy a real Contax as opposed to a real Kiev ... and agree , to a point about the Kiev 2 / 3 being '' beter '' than a '' clumsy '' Kiev 4m , but I really can't feel much dee-ference to use - and if the 4m is smooth and quiet , and creates sparkiling pics , then it's genuine bargain .

What a frightening thought! This Christmas my 7 year old nephew asked to hold my Leica and I ran straight out of the room!
> You name a kid "Nikki" and she tells you that the Leica is a Beautiful camera.
Lucky for her your favorite cameras aren't Zorkis. :)
