Elmar M Barrel Rotation

I just picked up a used current Elmar M 50/2.8. The barrel rotates freely all the way around when not fully extended? Is this normal? I have a collapsable Summitar that does not do this. It only extends straight out and then turns to lock into position - it does not rotate until fully extended and then only until lock position. I notice the Summitar has grooves on the barrel that the Elmar does not have, so is this just how the Elmar is? When I first extended it, I wound up with the Aperture setting on the bottom which seemed weird and is how I noticed that it rotates freely until extended fully.

Both my M and LTM F3.5 Elmars rotate in the same manner.

I have two of these lenses and they both do this. Wonderful little lens - enjoy it!
