View Full Version : Do you own a camera you've never used?
And I'm not talking about valuable collector's items here. I'm doing some cleaning up, and found I have one lurking at the back of the shelf, a nice "user-grade" Spotmatic SP 1000, which I bought cheap some time ago at a flea-market. This is my only screw-mount body. The meter doesn't seem to work no matter which batteries I try it with - I know I don't need a working meter for the camera to work. And the shutter speeds sound fine, right down to the 1-second, which runs like - clockwork! But for some reason I've just never gotten around to putting a roll of film into it.
How about you?

I was going to say yes until I read your caveat. I have to admit I haven't put a film through the LX2000.

I have a Yashica GTN that needs a roll run through it - its too nice a camera not to use. I meant to do that last weekend but wasn't well so didn't get out much. Next weekend...

My wife bought me a yashica mat 124G TLR at a country market, needs some work, up till now it`s been a fantastic paperweight! I wish she could find me a cheap chrome M7/ 50 lux !!!!!!!! :D
Nice gift from your lady, Parkes! When you se the negs from the 124G you might decide you don't need a Lux, just more 120 film!

I have a Pentax ME special edition that still lurks in its box. Bought in the 1980s with a 50/1.4 SMC-M lens. I thought I had lost it 10 years ago in a house move and found it earlier this year.

My desk drawer at work is full of cameras awaiting servicing (or to be broken for parts, for another camera's benefit), which have yet to be given a workout. Current count is:
1x Yashica Lynx 5000.
1x Pentacon FB (and Contax F for parts).
1x Kiev II (with another Kiev II donor body).
1x Ricoh Five-One-Nine.
1x Mamiya 6 folder (mark IV?). Not sure if I'll bother with this one.
1x Lordomat C35 (take-up spool jammed; with matching sacrificial Lordomat).
1x Contax III, cosmeticaly tidy but in need of a full service.
Also 1x Kiev III - this one I bought from another RFF member, and it is working fine - I just haven't got round to running any film through it yet.
On the other hand, all the cameras I have at home do get used on a regular basis, so I don't feel too guilty.
I bought my Nikon F2 in 1995 and promptly ran one roll of film through it, but none since, so technically I have used it, just only once.

I have a Yashica MG-1 I haven't used, a Canon QL17 that needs light seals, and someone gave me an APS camera earlier this year rather than throw it out.
This GAS stuff is contagious...
I have a Olympus 35EC that I got from eBay. It takes odd batteries, so I went to Batteries Plus with my bro-in-law when I was in Minneapolis, stuck some right-size batteries in there and it was non-funtional (so I did not buy the batteries). I took the camera home and re-soldered the battery wire that had corroded off, tested it with a AA battery (it worked), drove out to another Batteries Plus, and they only had one of the right size (it takes 2). The thing has been sitting on the shelf since then.
Do I have a camera that I've never used? Yes, but I'm counting cameras I've found, been given, or purchased as part of a "set" with other items that I wanted, etc. If you narrow it down to RF cameras, then the answer is, No. I've used (at least once) every RF camera I own.

Only a Non-RF camera that arrived a few days ago..it will not stay unmolested for much longer though.
I've got an Olympus XA-4 and a Pentax MX that still have their first unfinished films in, and I have a Kiev IV that I haven't even loaded yet. They're all fairly recent acquisitions and are competing with all my other gear (I've bought a lot over the past couple of years), but they are most definitely intended for use. Of the three, I expect the XA-4 to get the most use - I carry it around in my pocket, but I just haven't been anywhere interesting since I got it.

I have a Kodak Autographic III from my grandfather (circa 1918) that I've never used. I have thought about it, but getting or cutting film for it seems too much of a bother.

The only virgin camera body I have is a Holga that's still in the box--I bought two of them to play with...played with one and haven't touched it again in three years. So, thus far, I have no reason to use the other one.
I've got a holga, and a Polaroid 600 SE that have never been used along with a Nikon F that generally works until about 1/2 second and 1 sec that has never been shot!

I have a Zenit-S, which I only bought for its pretty looks. The shutter sounds strange aswell, so I'm not sure if its even usable. I also have a Beirette, which was given to me. I was told the film wind gets stiff after about 24 frames, but I havent tried it yet.

After reading these posts I can admit that I have an old Autographic with dried up bellows that I have never used. I have it because my father used it in the early thirties.
Having a camera and never using is like an alcoholic leaving a bottle out on the table to test his (or her) resolve.

I do have two "valuable collectible" Leicas that have not been used but the caveat eliminates those. So...I have a beautiful boxed Minolta SRT 101 with 28 and 50 Zuiko lenese that needs some use. Got it two years ago because that I started on this model in 1975. Nice to have it again and nicer to use it, so soon. I also have a lot of Nikonos models, all too nice to use, that are future collectibles so have only exercised thir shutters.

I have a Rollei 35TE that I've only used once. I bought it because it was really cheap and I liked the size but scale focusing just doesn't seem to be my thing.

Oddly enough I have a Spotmatic in exactly the same condition which I only bought for the f1.4 Takumar lens. I have used the lens a lot but never put a film through the body even though I'm sure it would work fine.

To my great shame I have a Crown Graphic that I've never shot, merely because it is such a PITA to deal with the film.

Did Ansel Adams say that... wow! Camera that I've never used?... my wife's Olympus Pen half frame. It's got a super sharp lens.

Ha! I'm guessing Mike is referring to the quotation currently in my signataure block. I might change that in the future, so I'd better copy it here for posterity.
"I eagerly await new concepts and processes. I believe that the electronic image will be the next major advance. Such systems will have their own inherent and inescapable structural characteristics, and the artist and functional practitioner will again strive to comprehend and control them." Ansel Adams, March 1991
Did Ansel Adams say that? Yep, in his introduction in my copy of The Negative.
I have mint and user-grade Contax T cameras as long-term backup to my working copy. The mint one was a backup for its previous owner who ran a roll before my purchase.
I also have a NIB Contax 139Q SLR that was someone's backup, and has almost certainly never been shutter-actuated since leaving the factory (still tucked in its shipping sleeve). Needs new foam before I load film but, meanwhile, I keep using the Aria.
These aren't collectibles, but it's fun to open a 30-year old box that looks fresh off the retail shelf. Remarkable what you can find on eBay. :)
