It could be a CV with lens, too. That would be less big.

Strangers.
Just give me 1500 worth of camera gear because I work hard.

You never know.

I have worked since I was 8 years old and started photography at the same age. I just got an M6 this year, 38 years later.

You've got to earn it my friend. But it does take a big set to ask!

He specified decent, quiet, fast... doesn't have to be an M6 methinks. I'd send him a Yashica Lynx 5000.

The lynx 5000 would be a great camera for him to use. He's asking a bit much I'd say.

I wouldn't mind if Santa would send me an M8. I promise not to sell it. I have been working for many years. I'm a nice decent man. [I will think of some other good stuff later on]. I would also like the Luigi camera case with the M8. No eco model please.

That was my first thought. But the spelling and grammar seem to be ok, not like the forcefully-let's-get-some-sort-of-silly-accent-across pseudo-bushspeak.

This could be the new wave of scams. Unfortunate, though, for those who really mean it.

Odd, though, to go online and request a very specific, expensive handout. A "handout" because he's not offering anything in return (photos for a worthy project, prints in return, something...)

I cannot see the post, presumably asking for a camera, because it's been deleted.

Didn't a whole lot of folks in RFF give BACK ALLEY a camera a couple of years ago?

FrankS

Jon, why bring this up in relation to this thread? This kid is asking for a camera for doing nothing. Joe did not ask for a camera, it was an initiative of the membership of RFF to collect $ to by a camera as a gift of thanks for the work Joe had put into moderating RFF. Once Joe became aware of it, he even asked Jorge to cancel this effort.

Your post, along with your "gearheads are not into meaningful photography like real photographers" statement, and your posted list of qualified photographers, indicates to me that you have some kind of underlying issue with RFF. Why not discuss it openly?

You're a positive contributer to RFF Jon, especially with your weekly pics threads. So why these little digs and put downs? Lay it on the table Jon.

I don't think Jon meant that in a bad way at all. I can't see the original post either, so I can't comment on how 'cheeky' the lad was being.

Anyone got it saved?

Hey, I'm in the phoenix area. I've got 20 or so film cameras laying about. If the kid wanted something basic to learn on, I'd be inclined to help...but a M6?

I cant see the add now, it’s been deleted, but I’ve witnessed acts of great generosity on this forum in the past, the early posts on this thread seemed more judgmental than generous however

This reminds me of a post on another forum where a guy asked for a medium format camera. He was very specific and wanted an SLR with interchangeable backs and lenses. I'm pretty sure he was talking about a Hasselblad :)

I'm disturbed by this thread.
I didn't see the original post, so can't judge if it was a cheeky scam or a naive request from someone who knows the utility but not the market value of what he asks for.
It's always possible that there is a need for help with photographic equipment in Afghanistan. It's also possible that it's a scam.
I wouldn't give to every beggar on the street, but I would never insult or berate them. In this unfortunate world some beg because they must.

Forget the M6, but IMHO a gift/loan of something more modest would cause you to feel very good because, you had either: (1) started someone on a lifetime in the photography experience, or (2) exposed him as fraud looking for a handout. Even if it is no. 1 and he grows disinterested, you will still have done a good thing. Maybe his problem is the he is uncertain about how much he really wants to become a photographer and therefore is reluctant to blow the bucks for nice equipment to learn on? In another life, I was a struggling college student with a wife and a baby daughter and several part-time jobs. Even though I used my dirt bike to commute to my many jobs, I was racked with the guilt that I received emense pleasure from riding it. Don't know anymore about the guy than any of you guys, but..........

Hey, guys, what's with the soapbox? We have no idea what happened. His post and its deletion are like a Rorshack test - we each see what we want in it, revealing more about ourselves than the petitioner.

FrankS:

I was out in the twilight this morning with a camera, and I got very angry with your recent posts as a I tried to relax and take some OK photos of guys going out hunting for hares.

Your behavior here is 'trolling'. I have never mocked your camera collection behavior, but you write untrue words that I have never said or implied.

I think FrankG is a bit nutty but he has you well sussed on his site.

Please keep your distance.

Joe:
You are a good guy doing a good job.
RFF caters for fondlers and for collectors. Dual audience.
You know that.
Stephen Gandy knows that also.
You also know that us photographers are not much into gear, and that that the collectors are not really into photography in a meaningful way. There is, however, a small crossover.
We all get along well together.
Why muddy the waters trying to make out out like we are in opposition? Especially given your privileged position on RFF.
Chill.
Enjoy the diversity.

I'll put my hands to that.

I understand, Frank.

You're accused of "trolling", and after all of that, not even an apology. If I did what you just did, I'd be told that I'm looking for a fight.

People who mock the "gearheads" are not called on it, and some prominent people have set the example. Those pointing out the flaws in their argument, accuse you of it in return, and brand you a troll.

::sigh::

OK guys. Lets keep away from the slanging matchs. I don't care if you consider yourself a gearhead, a fondler, a picture taker or anything else. The RFF rules apply equally to ALL members. If you have a problem with a post, please report the post. If you feel you must deal with the matter yourself, do it via PM and not in open forum. There is a wide diversity on the forum with many different views that are equally valid to the person who holds them. By all means argue the views as fiercely as you like but at the same time please respect the fact that other members may feel differently. You can hardly ask that others respect your view if you are not prepared to respect others.

this is an amazing place, really.
it has the ability to foster such care and human warmth and generosity while at the same time being able to generate such hard and cold and callous and mean comments.

are all forums like this?

i tell you what...let's start over - all of us who are embroiled in this mass of emotion and conflict.

here and now...
for those that feel that they have been unjustly accused of trolling...i apologize.
for those who have been accused of looking for a fight...i apologize.
for those who feel insulted by my comments about their comments...i apologize.
for those who have been upset, felt threatened, been banned and reinstated...i apologize.
for those who have suffered in any way from any actions taken here, by myself or others...i apologize.

let us cleanse, once and for all time, all the bitterness and bile and move on to a more peaceful time for each of us.
