ferider, most of these are shot with a Canon 50/1.4. This one, however, was a 28/Elmarit current version. Wide open of course. It think almost all the others were, as you'd expect with the Canon. Waiting on Mr. Postman for a Canon 35/2.0. Let's see how it does.

Fomapan 100, souped in Rodinal (1:100).
I find the grain pretty nice, actually. Finer than APX100, but prominent enough to give some nice character.
I think what you might be seeing is not actually the grain, but the weird "artifacts" (for lack of a better term) produced by the Summar in the out of focus areas.

amazing lens..super sharp at the plane of focus, nice glow at the highlights wide open, contrasty stopped down, bokeh goes from dreamy to paintery to swirly to crazy..
Interesting, Adrian! That Zeiss lens really has luminous color and great sharpness. I'm not so fond of the "unsettled" bokeh, just a matter of the lens designer's choice in dealing with the spherical aberrations. Is the Biotar a Planar precursor?
adrianzg those shots are amazing. I really like the look of that lens.

From all the lenses I own, the one with the most pleasing out-of-focus rendition must be the Olympus Zuiko 90mm f/2.0 Macro.
Both these were shot at f/2.0, both are scanned 5x7 darkroom prints. Here on Ilford XP2:
http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs50/f/2009/313/4/5/Flower_Bubble_Girl_by_philosomatographer.jpg
Here in Kodak TMZ P3200:
http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs46/f/2009/226/a/b/People__s_Car_by_philosomatographer.jpg
When it comes to absolute isulation, even with very close / busy backgrounds, nothing in my kit does it like the Olympus Zuiko 250mm f/2.0. All these are at f/2.0, here on grainy, expired Fuji ISO800 colour print film:

And here on FP4, again a 5x7 darkroom print:
http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs50/f/2009/323/5/1/Irii_by_philosomatographer.jpg
When it comes to modern lenses, the best I have ever used was Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L - sold it along with the rest of my EOS kit to fund the exotic Zuikos + film :-)

Great thread! I recently stumbled over it and have been slowly going through it from start to end over the last few days. Bokeh truly exist in many, many different forms and shapes. I'm still not sure however, if I'm any wiser as to what bokeh I like and prefer ;)
These two examples are both shot with a Tamron 70-200 2.8 on a ev0l "I shalt not speak thy name" type of camera. It's the smoothest lens I have bokeh-wise, but some of that obviously due to the generous focal length.
Greylag Goose at 200mm, 1/640, ISO200, F/4.0. I really like the wavy, smooth rendering of water, although it's not exactly the most challenging background.

Some flowers, handheld at 200mm, 1/250th, F/5.6 and ISO 280 at about 1.0m (lens got a decent close focus distance) in rapidly fading evening light.

This shot was taken on a Nikon D3 and the Nikkor 800 5.6 IF ED AIS. The sun was right behind the cow. In fact, I focused and had to stand in front of the lens to flag the front element. There was considerable foliage between the cow and myself which resulted in the round orbits in the frame.

There are some excellent photographs on here.
Here's one of my better attempts from my Bessa R with Jupiter 8 at f2, this is only the second film I've put through this camera, the previous lens on it had been a lovely Canon 50mm f1.8 but It didn't seem to correspond with the range finder so most of my shots were out of focus, so I threw this Jupiter 8 on and its been excellent!

I don't really know what's good boke or not (I'm new to cameras, this is from the first roll of film I took, about a week ago), but I like the swirly-ness of the light in the leaves.
Not knowing much about how it all works, I was surprised to see the aperture highlights grow more elliptical (but perpendicular to the centre) as they move away from the centre of the image. The aperture on this camera is a `proper' sort, with just 5 blades though.

How interesting! Looks like people actually seek out the effect. I liked it but I'm an complete and utter beginner w.r.t photography.
Well Minister Ds are cheap and plentiful, even if the effect is far subtler than some of the shots in those threads. I suppose a max aperture of f2.8 limits the amount of shenanigans that occur.
The front lens group on the Minister D is a little substandard, I wonder if that contributes towards anything.
Let's try this one, M8 + Dream lens (click for larger version)

This was the first time I was able to tease out some truely "crazy bokeh" (I'm not advertising it as pleasing) from my VC35/1.4
Wide open, shooting into the sun, through trees/leaves with lots of little hot spots of light peaking through

This thread (http://www.apug.org/forums/forum44/41494-blog-discussion-about-elusive-swirly-bokeh.html) over on APUG talked about swirly bokeh.
And this thread (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?t=50292&highlight=swirly) over on the Large Format Forum also discusses swirly bokeh.

The second post of that thread was by Roger Hicks who said that the Bokeh made him feel floor spinning drunk. I didn't quite know what he meant until I looked at the photo in question!

And people think the Lux ASPH has great bokeh! IMHO, the Nokton's bokeh is the best in 35mm fast lenses

This lens has the smoothest bokeh of all the telephotos I own. Even stopped down, its many blades-rounded aperture and 180 mm focal length keep the background creamy smooth.
