Admit it, you used a Canon 5D. :p

When my wife and I attended the Christmas show at Radio City last year there was an announcemnent made over the P.A. and a statement in the program asking poeple not to take pictures inside the theatre, since it is a copyrighted performance. I am quite surprised to see there are other standards in different venues.

ummm.....and why do you think there are other standards in different venues? :D

Gotta find that -85/128ths setting!!!
Very nicely done!

Most of the time a venue asks you to not photograph it's because 99% of the camera using public does not know how to deactivate a flash. I shot without flash and was very discreet about it. I am not looking ot sell this material only share it with my friends here at RFF for technical analysis.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

That would be -2/3 EV, Joe.
With all due respect, most of the time a venue asks you not to photograph it has to do with copyright and the fact that they want you to buy the printed program with the glossy color photos rather than take your own. Avoiding the flash of amateur photograhers is an added side benefit.
Having said that, etrigan63, if I were you, I'd stick to my story!;)

Yes that is true, but this begins to head into "Copyright vs. First Amendment" territory. As I am not selling the imagery or making any sort of profit from it, and I bought the program with the glossy photos in it, I am within my rights to have photos of an event I paid money to see. That I took them by my own hand is irrelevant. I use them to supplement the images provided at the venue.
It also helps to have a black, reasonably quiet, non-threatening camera at your disposal too. :D

Nice. :)
Did you use (my former) 75 for any shots?

Nope, all taken with my 40mm Nokton. We had a box seat.

I said "reasonably quiet" not "absolutely silent". Gimme a break guys. Compared to my 1DMk2, my M8 is practically mute. My new Luigi cover also helps.

Nice work. What, if any, noise reduction work did you perform?

The images are almost straight from the camera using Lightroom 1.3 and a set of M8 presets I found. Only a couple had to be sent to Photoshop for a slight rotation to correct tilted frames (I shot a lot of those from the hip - literally).

These are excellent images and show what the M8 is capable of in this kind of situation. Theatrical photography has been one of my specialties for over 25 years and I love using the M8 for it whenever I can. I normally have to resort to the Canons due to the need for long zoom lenses, but for the kind of shots you posted the M8 is perfect.

Not to go off topic, but is that the truth? I was under the impression otherwise.

Copyright law deals with the sale and reuse of intellectual property. I neither plan to sell or reuse these images for anything other than their technical merit as photographs. I am not impinging on the profits of Radio City Music Hall, RCA, or Rockettes LTD by having taken these images and shown them to some fellow photographers nor am I planning on making my own version of the production nor passing these images off as official Rockettes merchandise. To imply otherwise could ultimately lead to the distribution of "roofies" at the end of the show so that the audience will not leave with copyrighted images in their minds.
