A new book reviewed here:
http://arts.independent.co.uk/books/features/article3141454.ece
Good text. Thanks for the link, Jon
I've preordered this book but am wondering if there'll be a lot of duplication with the previous book "Magnum Stories". The texts are of course different - Magnum Stories had 2 pages of text by each photographer accompanied by another few pages of photographs. It will be interesting to read what they have to say about each other and their pictures, but is it worth the expense of the book.
I wasn't surprised to see that Philip Jones Griffiths wasn't the one who wrote about Martin Parr.
The UK Telegraph also has a feature on the new book:

I picked this BEAST (LAARGGE and HEAVYYYY) up yesterday and must say this is probably THE photobook of the year ........ (and i buy a loy of them;) )!
There is of course some duplication with other Magnum publications but not that much because the book was put together using a system where 2 Magnum photographers were matched and each had to pick his 6 favourites from the others' portfolio and vice versa.
6 Pictures from every Magnumphotographer past and present .... a good mix of photojournalism, streetphotography and more artsy photograhy ..... certainly not just photojournalism: war and misery .
Where there is duplication with other Magnum publications ... do not worry ... because printsize and printquality in the nem Magnum Magnum jubileum book are extraordinary ... pictures never looked this good ....
The printwork was done by Steidl in Goetingen .. which says enough i hope ..
you realy have to see the prints to believe how good the reproductions are: breathtaking!!

From Amazon - Product Dimensions: 45.8 x 35.4 x 7.2 cm
That is seriously big, and I thought Magnum Stories was big already.
Why did they call it Magnum Magnum?
I'd still like to read it.

Did you order yours from amazon.com? If so, how much is the shipping?
I just saw the book at orell füssli and it's sFr 250.-. Might be worthwhile ordering it from the US.

As far as I know all books from Amazon.com (and Amazon.co.uk) are sent at the same rate.
My Magnum Stories purchase was very heavy and didn't cost me any extra in shipping.

Oh dear, my copy of "the Genius of Photography" turned up just a couple of hours ago ( some five and a half weeks sooner than Amazon said it would!!) Now it looks like I'll be spending out on another book.

Thanks! I ordered one yesterday (two actually but one is for a friend) from amazon UK but am worried that it will take too long to arrive. Yesterday, when I ordered them it said "Availability: 2-4 weeks" but now it says "7-9 months" :(
My friend bought it as a christmas gift for his sister so 7-9 months doesn't sound good. I got my fingers crossed!

Isn't that annoying.
There are Amazon Marketplace sellers with the same book, but more expensive. In theory they should send it straight away.

Yes, quite annoying!
The marketplace sellers have the item in stock but at that price I might aswell just buy it at a local bookstore. Too bad that all the places where I can get it cheap (i.e. amazon US and UK) don't have it in stock :(

I think the shipping cost is scaring them off.
My Magnum Stories last year must have cost more in shipping than what I paid for the book.

Just checked my order status, it says:
Dispatch estimate: 29 Nov 2007
Delivery estimate: 3 Dec 2007 - 7 Dec 2007
So they must be getting more orders than they have books for.

I order a lot from Amazon; almost every day.
They do not stock anything, they order it from their supplier after I order it from them.
If they do not want to sell a book (or whatever) because of the costs they take the order and give a very long waiting time. Their 4-6 weeks means 'never'. They know that eventually you'll cancel and go elsewhere.

Shouldn't count my chickens...just received this message from Amazon UK:
"We are sorry to report that the availability of the following item has
changed:

We have been informed that this item has not yet been released. At
present, we will keep your order open."

My friend just informed me that he has received the same letter. Now I really have to make up my mind about whether I want to wait or buy it locally for almost twice as much as it costs on amazon uk or us.

I was just flicking through this beast in my local Borders. Looks very impressive, and it's fascinating to see who's covering whom.
BTW I noticed when looking through the book that my three favourite 'young' Magnum photogs, Trent Parke, Alex Majoli and Donovan Wylie, were all born in the same year – 1971. Which makes them all a year younger than me, over-achieving *******s! ;)
I cancelled my order with Amazon UK and ordered with Amazon US instead...costs more (about 12%), but at least you get the book.

I thought about that too but since I'm in no hurry I thought I'd wait a little to see if something happens.

You might want to think about ordering direct from the Magnum store (http://store.magnumphotos.com/). It might work out a little more expensive, but at least the money's going straight to the people themselves, and they're great at getting things delivered quickly.
Just go to Waterstones, unless it's much cheaper on Amazon, they have it in there.
Cheers, Lol

Quick question about the printing.. Are the photos printed so there's one for each page or are there any of those annoying two-page photos with a big split right in the middle? I hate that! :bang: :bang:
Visiting the Amazon site will provide the answer:

Haven't gone through the book in detail yet, but while there are some double page spreads, most are on a single page.

I was just in a local shopping mall close to my house in Bangkok and I saw Magnum Magnum and it was around 150.00 usd (after conversion from Thai Baht) with my 15% discount at the store....the book was brand new and sealed so I couldn't open it up and check it out.....After looking on Amazon and seeing how much this book costs back in the states I think it is a good deal for prices out here...the book is actually around
175 usd but with my discount it is 150 usd which I think is a pretty good deal considering that books usually cost more out here....anyways....I think I am going to go back tomorrow and pick it up...I guess my question is, for those of you have it or have had the pleasure of looking through it.....Is this book worth it?
thanks, Michael

There's Magnum Magnum Compact Edition published end September 2008 UK, and end November 2008 USA.
Smaller (I understand regular photo book size) and less expensive too.

Michael:
You're welcome.
Like you I thought the original rather expensive, and too large for me.
Now, I've got the compact edition on pre-order from Amazon.co.uk for end of September delivery at £22 or so.
Enjoy the book.
I got mine from Asia Books in Siam Paragon, Bangkok, Thailand at 30% off. Lucky me the book shop had a sale when I was there last month. Mine was the huge edition.
Many of the pictures are quite stunning. There are one or two people missing from the book though, Sebastiao Salgado for example. His omission is presumably because he left Magnum. Predictably small-minded given the nature of Magnum politics.

Haha, Very funnny.....I was in Asia books earlier tonight but not at Siam Paragon, I was at a different mall....the funny thing is, I received a 15% discount on my next purchase (expires in a month) and I was going to use it to purchase Magnum Magnum but I think I will hold off on it...that is unless they have some crazy sale on the book in the next couple of months....I guess I wil use my discount for my second choice...the photo book that was done for the King's Birthday....thanks again....Michael

Hello Pelican, the name of the book is "9 days in the Kingdom".....you can read about it here

they had a show at ZEN Plaza in November/December....it was an interesting show.....anyways.....it was a really cool idea for the King's birthday.........cheers....Michael
Forgot to ask, how much is the King's book in Thai Baht? Thanks.
Many of the pictures are quite stunning. There are one or two people missing from the book though, Sebastiao Salgado for example. His omission is presumably because he left Magnum. Predictably small-minded given the nature of Magnum politics.
One factor might be they don't have distribution rights on his photos anymore? Also he might not want to have his photos included.
Other notable "defectors" are James Nachtwey, Eugene Richards and Mary Ellen Mark.

The King is a hardcore shooter, when he got out of the hospital after his stroke a while back he had a big DSLR in his hands and he was doing it.
Hello,
I've got a question to owners of "Magnum Stories" and "Magnum Magnum":
I'm buying the first one soon, and i think of buying second one later as well.
Could owners of both of them tell me, are there many photos repeated between these albums?
There's only one of them available in a bookstore i found, so i can't compare myself.
Thanks,
Pawel
If you're going to buy Magnum Magnum there's a new smaller scale (and cheaper) version coming out soon. I have both but haven't done a comparison between them.

You know you're a hardcore shooter when they make you one of these:

I saw the compact version of Magnum Magnum in my bookshop last night - £35 and I bought it (even though it was all sealed up).
Although it is marketed as 'compact', it is the same height as Magnum Stories and only an inch less deep. Hardback. The photos are certainly large enough to enjoy looking at without wishing they were bigger.
No time to do anything more than open it up and have a quick browse - the quality of the printing is superb the B&W photos and colour. Much better than Magnum Stories. A couple of photos I saw were split over two pages which is not so good but the rest had more than enough space to 'breathe'.
Looking forward to having a better look tonight with a cup of tea and some digistives :)

I bought what I suspect is the new compact version from Amazon (Canada) just now. It's 50$, which is a bit more reasonable than the $150+ the older one sells for, assuming you can still find it.
