I am a new RFman, I just got a m6ttl and a 35mm lux pre-asph awhile back and am still learning how to use it. These are all some very nice images. images in black and white for this lens is especially stunning. The dreamy and glow effect. Can't wait to do more photos with it.

My first photo here. Still learning how to use this lens. Have been trying hard to approach the "glow" effect. But no luck at so far. sigh. Anyone give me a pointer?
This is 800npz from a flatbed. B&W in CS4. No darkroom access for a long time. and been shooting with color or xp2. Fortunately, I will start having a wet darkroom again. So some old shot to come.

I'm still learning the ins and outs of this lens... and thus far, I'm not too happy with the softness wide open. I do one lens one body(due to funds, not the philosophy), so I may just have to sell this lens :(
I'll upload one soon, but how exactly do I inline images?
Mike, as I mentioned elsewhere, I like that portrait a lot. :)
Walter, to upload photos embedded to a posting, just click the small picture icon (5th from the right, lower icon row) and paste the URL, where you photo is hosted.
The 35mm Summilux-M is a little soft wide open but it might be also necessary to have it cleaned from haze ? If I "need" higher contrast wide-open, I use my M-Rokkor 40/2.0 (CLE) version. Despite being a stop slower, it is a great and cheap compliment to the 35mm Summilux-M.

maddoc - that is an incredible photo, where was it taken?
cnphoto, tandaryl, Doug, Ted, thanks a lot !!:)
This photo was taken last Sunday (March 14th) on top of Moiwa-Mt, close to Sapporo (Hokkaido), Japan. Usually everybody goes to this mountain to have a nice view over Sapporo at night but I like the opposite view a lot. Film was Tri-X (rated at 400ISO) and developed in Tmax developer, aperture was f/2.0 and shutter 1/60s (from memory ....)

I couldn't agree more with the initiator of this thread; by a process of trial and error and of elimination, I have arrived at a combination of 50mm f1.5 Summarit from 1956 and a 1972 35mm Summilux. Now I can concentrate on taking photographs and forget the gadget element!

PS: I do not have a front cap for my 35mm Summilux. I expect these are no longer available; can anyone suggest an alternative? (I refer to the lens itself; I know you can fit a 58mm Nikon lens cap on the hood, which does provide good protection if you also fit a filter)
piazza63
04-04-2010, 08:38
Moonwarck- I just a black plastic cap (39mm I think) when I'm going hood-less and a series 7 uv warming filter when I have the hood on. I also have put some electrical tape around the filter to get it in the hood more snugly in hopes of getting less dust in there.
Lord Fluff - I use the summilux on my M8 quite often and since a series 7 uv/ir filter is like 170 bucks I don't bother with it. The shooting conditions in which the IR filter is even needed (like synthetic black fabrics) that it has not been a problem for me. Photos below:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronpiazza/sets/72157622944273220/
there are even more on there, after I while I stopped dumping photos into different groups and just left them in the photo stream. A quick search for m8 summilux should get you some more.

Gosh Helen, I though NY never asleep..!! :).. Beautiful capture.. love this lens.
I keep a 12504 hood handy with a BW 49mm 486 UV/IR filter in it. rubber band around it keeps it snug.
Rarely find it needed, the lux already filters much UV, and some IR without filter (mine is an '80s).
Is anyone using this lens on their M8 and shooting in colour? If so, what's your approach to the IR filter problem?
Just a query, my 35mm pre lux, has a brass focussing tab, after being informed these only come with a plastic focussing tab, im assuming this is an after market change?

No, the earliest ones of the second model - from 2166701 it is the second model - had an infinity lock, first in black paint on brass, then black paint on chrome and finally chrome. Later the infinity lock was deleted in favor of a plastic grip without infinity lock.

Hi Simon.
I do not really know what to think about this lens yet. It is something there that really makes a big impact in some pictures I do not want to be without. More practice with it will make me make the most of it.
And your last pic; looks like an unidentified flying object is coming by. Maybe you have the first version?
/Hans
I have had this(flare) in a few images once awhile from my late v.2. I don't think this is only exclusive for the first version.
I have to said that in Simon's last image, the flare is pretty extreme compare to what I had.

Well, I should stress that is is the worst flare-afflicted photo I have taken with the 35 pre-asph lux (the lens that has quickly become one of my favorites!). And the lighting condition was pretty extreme, with several strong light sources in a pretty dim environment. As I purchased this lens not so long ago, these days I tend to test its limits in different lighting conditions.
As is mentioned in most every 35 pre asph thread, there are bad ones, and there are good ones. Bad ones almost always give veiling flare wide open, good ones don't.
Bad ones always give that circular thing in some kinds of light, good ones don't.
It's tempting to think the latest ones fix everything, but that is probably not the case. I'd say, if it has any flare issues that a Cron doesn't, it could probably use a trip for a clean, and maybe even a trip to Solms...

Taken from the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix at about 8 am. M6 with pre-aspherical Summilux on original Velvia 50. On a Cibachrome print, the walking poles of the walkers on the ridge are clearly defined - a beautiful, sharp lens.

Thank YOU Julian
btw just 'LOOKED' at your website
OUTSTANDING imagery & beautifully set up web design

Very nice images! I like the one of the non-daikon ashii in the window.

I really, really want one of these lenses! In fact I have an M2 begging for one but I can't seem to find one! And am afraid that once I do, I won't be able to afford it. Found one on ebay through a search and it was listed at around 3,000 bucks. Is this right? Tried searching the usual retaliers, even the Leica shops here in Germany. Nope. Every time this thread pops up on the main board I want one even more! Nice pics...
gonzo74: as far as i know you can probably find this lens for about $1100- $1500

I have seen in the $1150-$1600 range. I got mine at the lower end of the range (twice); fabulous lens. What I like most is its small form factor. There are some slight variations; you may want research it adequately.

Taken with 35 mm 1.4 Summilux on Leica M6/M7 on 10-year-old expired Ektapress 100 :). Not the most vibrant colours but I like the look. And at $2.00 roll, the price was right.
thanks helen and nikkor. I am in the process of rescuing the rest. see what i can do. :)
Regarding the research. Do you have a good place to start? I assume we are talking serial numbers and the like right. I read certain versions flare more than others. If you have a reference that would be great. I've been keeping an eye out for one but haven't seen a thing in months (unless I count the super-overpriced variety).

35 lux pre asph @F2.8 on M8.2 - I prefer the separation of tones and focus @ F2.8 with this particular lens. If I want specifically want F1.4 I usually use the 35/1.4 ASPH. Often I carry both lenses with me and switch lenses to capture my subject matter at both apertures. I wish the earlier lens would focus at 0.7m but one can't have it all.

Beautiful composition... You really surrounded that subject with taste! The placing of the trees and bushes is so natural, and protects, hides, makes the viewer want the beauty of the bridge and the light... Congratulations!
Cheers,
Juan
What I'm really pleased about with this photo is the fiery orange leaves came out as I saw them. They would have been more muted in the M8 color saturation of std, though could have been fixed in pp, but I like how they came out of the camera as-is with the setting to med. from std.

The first version (steel rim) enjoys its reputation. I checked many album showing its result. Since I do not own a 35 'lux before, it would be unfair to comment on the lens. Would anyone please explain the uniqueness of it?

Nice shooting. You have a great eye.
