Some very nice shots here! I just got this lens for my M8 and wonder if anyone knows of a lens cap that can be used with the two-piece hood/filter combination?
My solution is a $5 cheap no-name E58 snap-in lens-cap. :) This kind, where you have to press two little buttons to take the cap off... (don't know how to explain in English ... :o)

Thanks! A search for "E58 lens cap" on ebay only shows Canon variants though. Do you know of a place to buy them?
It took me some while to find one on-line ! I bought my in Japan, just a no-name E58 (58mm) snap-on lens-cap made in Hongkong like for example this here: (eBay) item # 290324717995 (no relation to the seller, just as an example !)

Thomas, thank you !! :) Not the sharpest lens wide open but for this kind of shots OK. That one was taken at f/1.4, BTW.
Does this work when the original hood is in use, as well as reversed? Or reversed, do you need to use the flat disc thing?
I cheated and have been using the CV 40/1.4 screw in hood. Will probably be using the E46 version mostly from now.
Check my blog for some overview info. on the lux 50/1.4 Summilux IIs.

I used to think that my Summilux 35/1.4 preA is less contrasy due to it's an old lens.
Then when I sent my M7 to the master, he said "your lens is a bit foggy. I can clean it up for you."
When I got it back I shot a roll of slide with it and was very surprised.

No. Old lens do not necessarily generate vintage images.

These were all taken with M8 in b/w capture, with E46 pre-asph 50/1.4 lux.
Most at ISO 320, a few @ 160.

Thomas, welcome to the club ! :D
#1 I like very much !
Many thanks, Gabor. I am currently fixing a 12526 hood so it holds a 37mm filter in place on the pre-asph. I love every quirk about this lens except 2 things. One, the .9m close focus which is harsh for some like me who often shoot people in close; the other is the lack of filter threads on the lens. The close focus is something with which I am becoming familiar through my love affair with a ZM 1,5/50. But the ONLY mitagating aspect that makes the lack of filter threads tenable is the beautiful glowing 'flaws' in the rendering of this lens.
I find this lens is becoming my standard 35, even over my asph. lux. I guess my bad taste is showing through? Well, be that as it may, I still do love my asph lux as a very reliable low light lens.

Hi Thomas, I'm right there with you. I thought I'd sell the pre-asph after getting the summilux asph, but I haven't been able to do it.
But then for low light performance (and everything else) the summilux asph is just dynamite. But then sometimes I like the funk (aka contrast-glow-flaws) of the pre-asph at f1.4-2, and how tiny it is. Rinse, wash, repeat.

Helen - I like the portrait from on the bus. It does have a 70s feel, though that might be due to the subject's hair style. I like the quiet, solitary mood.

I recently purchased a 35mm pre-A summilux and was a bit worried after coming across this thread as I had not received it yet. Well it finally came and I must say that I am extremly pleased with the performance of this lens. I love the "signature" of this lens. Guess, I'll go ahead and jump into this thread. Picked up a 35 pre-asph lux from a former photog at my newspaper. Had the mount replaced by Leica this year.
Every time I think I might sell it, I just find myself thinking I should spend some time exploring this lens.
Photo is from a documentary project I've been doing on a small community theater. This was shot during a rehearsal. It's a production of the Rocky Horror Show.

Is the "pre-asph"the same lens as "Version II" of the 35mm 1.4?
If not, are these two versions similar in performance?
The discussion on this theme is very old. The first Summilux 35mm f/1.4 was introduced in about 1960. It had a chrome mount (though some black paint lenses were made) and it needed the "Ollux" shade that was mounted with a bayonet mount. The second Summilux 35mm f/1.4 was introduced in about 1966 and had a black anodized aluminium mount. It used another shade, the 12504, wich clamped on the lens in the classical way.
Leitz allways stated that there was no optical difference between these two versions, but many people believe there are.
I do have both versions and I must say there are differences in performance between the two.
The first version is not vey good @ f/1.4 and f/2, but from f/2.8 the lens is the best 35mm lens I have ever used.
The second version however is a little better @ f/1.4 and f/2, but from f/2.8 it is not as good as the first version. Nevertheless, it is a very good performer. There is however little flatness of field; the images have something weird in this respect. The field is curved in a very strange way.
Tom Abrahamsson states that with the introduction of the second version there was a change in the spacing of the elements in relation to each other.
This can be true. However, I cannot confirm it from the specimens I own, because the differences they show can also be the result of individual variations during the production. Only a very thorough test with more lenses could give clarity on this. A test like that is however difficult because of the rarity of the lens.

Leica M2, Summilux 35mm f/1.4 2nd version @ f/5.6, Tmax400 printed on Ilford MGIV.
This shot makes clear the lack of flatness of field. In the center of the image the background is still reasonably sharp, but towards the sides the backgroud becomes more and more unsharp.

Erik and Helen,
Thanks for the clarification of the term "pre-asph" to me.
It seems that when one lens was optimized for 2.8 and larger, some sacrifice was made for larger apertures, and then the scarifice was changed for the next model.

And in case anyone thinks it's just Erik's lens, I have exactly the same effect with my pre-Lux. It's a lens designed for reportage where the centre of the frame has to be sharp and who cares about the corners. I'm not knocking it though...just something to be aware of.
Such a lack of flatness of field can be effectively used for people photography. I don'tsee it as a flaw at all.

I have many 35mm lenses, but this is the only one that has this effect. The effect has however nothing to do with the famous "glow" of the lens.

Horrible lighting. The first was wide open at 1/16th. The second was a faster shutter speed, but still wide open.

Erik.
Erik,
I am aware of this fact.
The photos were taken yesterday with a pre-asph 35mm 1.4 Summilux wide open on a Hexar RF with replacement viewfinder. I was trying out the lens for the first time and the camera too.

I need the cash to be sold. Sounds crazy, doesn't it.
Seriously, I LOVE this lens.
It was as easy as using a P&S camera with full automation.
It was a combined experiment for the lens at 1.4 and for the Hexar RF camera which often gets negative comments on its "problems".
I paid $250 for this great camera. I set the shutter speed selector to AE and then enjoyed taking pgotos.

Raid, what is it's serial number?
It is a fine lens, and due to it's rarity, it will hold its price if the optics are clean.

Excellent shots, all three! The feeling of confinement in the middle shot is heightened by the out of focus areas and the glow in the last shot is divine! Brilliant!
Fabulous photo !!

Sometimes I'm not sure how to feel about your pattern-heavy shots, sometimes I like them a lot, sometimes I don't get them. But this one I simply love.

Madoc, that is a great photo/moment that you managed to capture with the two guys standing with briefcases in the snow.
That Acros with Rodinal also looks like a lethal combination.
Cheers.
