Anything gold or gold plated is tacky.

This seller has sold other gold-plated IIIf's. Anyone think to ask where all these cameras are coming from?

It's probably real nicely polished brass.

A lot of money for gold plating.
this will wear away like a snow bank in Timmins in July.

Assuming the pictures are a true reflection of the colour (and that assumption is questionable) then it's not brass. You'd have a good case for returning it if it turned out not to be gold anyway.

I fail to see the point, in honesty but I'm sure it will appeal to some. You really wouldn't want to use it though for fear of wearing the plating off. Who knows how thick it is...or isn't! Turned a user into a display model hasn't it?
I would love an all brass Leica II / IIIc which I could polish and use - but gold plated = yuk !

Pimp leica... that's a new one....
I think it deValues the camera myself. The chrome/silver I think is so much nicer.Especially with that black sharkskin leather I think it's called.

Does anyone really know what the "gold" plating is that the FSU counterfeiters use?
It looks like gold when first received in its protective plastic wrapping (I have a fake Leica II based on the FED 1) but the milled film transport and rewind knobs soon tarnish and the rest of it goes a duller, redder brassy colour eventually, but doesn't seem to tarnish like brass usually does. (Maybe it has a lacquer coating??)
I though it might be some sort of nickel alloy, but maybe someone with metalurgical knowledge can enlighten us?
The copy Leicas from ex-USSR are not plated at all - it's just the brass after the chrome is removed - use brass polish - it comes up beautifully .

Reminds of the the "gold" Pentax LX which was actually produced by Pentax including a "gold" lens to match.
