Howdy,

Tonight I picked up a 49mm rubber lens hood and a cable release (both cheapies from Ritz) for use with my Canonet. The hood is pretty wide and actually obscures part of the viewfinder and only part of the rangefinder spot is usable. I looked around on BH and foung one that might work a bit better for me: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=357635&is=REG
What do you think?

Also, the cable release will not release the shutter! Do Canonets need some kind of special release? It doesn't seem to thread all the way into the button.

Thanks!

Mike

The Canonet takes a 48mm Filter and lens hood. Do you find that the 49mm went in, or do you have a step-up adapter?

The rubber hoods, are useless for rangefinders. They block most of the focusing patch. I've gone to using the metal screw on ones (Vivitar, etc) They block very little of the viewfinder. I'm going out tomorrow to snag a 46mm one for a buddies Ricoh 500G. Do you want me to grab a 48mm one too? I use them on all of my rangefinders, and they work very well. I leave them on the camera, and a cheap, generic 52mm plastic lens cap, fits onto the hoods perfectly. I have this setup on my GIII QL-17, Vivitar ES, Minolta Hi-Matic 7sII, and many other rangefinders. It works out very well.

Also, check out, http://www.thecamerahunter.com/ he's a local supplier that specializes in rangefinder hoods and filters. Let me know if you want me to pick one up for you. NO CHARGE.

Whoah, thanks for the offer Russ! I have to place an order with BH for some film, so I will probably add the Kalt metal hood onto the order. If the picture is correct, it should be adequate without blocking the RF patch. Much appreciated though!

Brian, I forgot to mention that I did indeed get a step-up ring. It is a bit of a pain to find filters, caps, etc. for 48mm, so when I was at a local-ish shop last week I went ahead and picked up the step-up ring and a used UV filter.

If the picture is right, its pretty much straight. I think it should work.

Check this out. The exact 48mm size, and much cheaper than the one that you are looking at.

Since I "invested" in the 48 -> 49 step up ring, I will probably look for 49mm hoods. I will definitely check "the bay" for a 49mm hood.

At the same time, it might be easier with shipping, etc. to just add a 49mm hood on oto my film and developer order at BH.

Thanks a bunch!!

Any thoughts on the cable release?

The superb, Vivitar ES, also uses a 49mm hood....
