I came across this auction http://tinyurl.com/39ykch (http://tinyurl.com/39ykch) and was surprised to see how high the bidding has gone (at this point in time, still 30 minutes to go.)

Is the pre-ASPH Summicron that much in demand to result in such a price? Or is this an anomaly?

The reason I ask, is I have one just like this, and it may be worth considering selling it and getting a 35/2 Zeiss, and using the money left over on another lens.

This model is the 4th version of the 35mm Summicron and is considered, by some, to have the best out-of-focus "bokeh" of any Leica lens. In short, it's a cult lens.

PS: If yours has a serial number between 297000 to 3731200, yours is also a cult lens.

also, for these models, the chrome, and made in Germany adds a a couple/few hundred, and having the original hood, caps, and box also seems to add a couple/few hundred.

For all the reasons stated above, it is a cult lens. I think if you are used to the look of the Gen IV 'cron you may be dissapointed by the Biogon. Don't get me wrong, the Biogon is a stella lens, it just has a very different look to the Gen IV. Average condition black Gen IV's with a hood fetch about $1100USD and you can see what a perfect chrome example costs. Andrew.

Hmm...good to know mine falls into that serial number range. I have to admit, it's my favorite lens...and the bokeh is great.

Not sure that it's much more than 5-10% better than a Rokkor 40/2 to be honest, but it does compare very well with the even more expensive ASPH, and is much smaller than the current V5 as well.

Jeez, at these prices, it makes one wonder if it's time to sell ...
