Since Vladis(the guy I got this from) included two extra lens caps, I'm going to put a pinhole in one and play some more with it.

It's interesting that some of the Russian lenses came in both rigid and collapsable versions. The 50 I have is the rigid version that came on a Zorki-6. Also have a couple of Industar-22s in the collapsable version - one on a Zorki-1, the other on a Zorki-C. Plus a Zorki-4 that came with a Jupiter-8 lens. So I have a variety.

:D I have both the fixed and collapsible I-50s and have found them to be great lenses. I use the fixed on a Mir and the collapsible one on a Leica IIIc. Maybe due to my age or something like that, but I really like the style these lenses as well as the Jupiter 3/8/12 I have. Reminds me of the 50s and 60s. Sharp but not excessively so and a level a contrast that is pleasing without being harsh. Can you tell I like them?

I have a fixed I-50 that's filthy. I couldn't use the Zorki to which it was attached, so it sat in the close amonst several J-8 (Contax mount) cousins, until I go the Leica. Now, I'm looking for an adapter ring to fit the thing to the Leica, and I'll clean it up, too. Heck, might do the Leica some good.
Can't wait to try it!
Is there an official hood for the lens?

it would he hard to use a hood on that thing because the outer rings are focusing and aperature.

I could not have said it better myself - I have both a collapsible Industar 50 and the Industar 22. I use a Lietz FISON hood and it comes off in a jiffy to adjust the aperture. You learn to think in an aperture preferred mode with this lens. I find myself using the same technique when I use a 35/2.8 Jupiter 12.

Build quality seems to be couple of marks higher than the Jupiter lenses, as well.

I, too, have adopted the aperture-priority method when using the J-12 and the I-50, particularly if I have a filter mounted on the lens. No problems using it this way either!!!

I have the collapsible Industar 50 on my Fed 2, agree its a super lens.

Camera Quest have suitable hoods and caps. I have the hood its perfect.

John, what kind of viewfinder is that in your picture? I have been searching high and low for an affordable 50mm finder...

back on topic, has anyone compared the industars to the original elmar?

Its a Passoptic, they were being sold off here a few years ago. I haven't seen them since, I'm sorry. I would recommend the Russian Turret however, it has settings for 28,35,50,85,135. The only other would be from Camera Quest. the Voigtlander ones are good if a bit expensive.

Sorry I forgot to add, I have the Elmar and the Industar. The Elmar is less contrasty, but without hood more flare proof. the Industar is good with Color though. see

Thanks, sadly I cant seem to find passoptics anywere on the internet (did a search). I will keep looking on ebay for something suitible (I find the turret finder too bulky).

In addition to John's obsevations, my collapsible I-50 and I-22 also perform better than my post WWII 3.5 Elmar with regards to contrast and flair. Sorry Ernst Lietz fans, but that's the truth. My 2.8 screw mount Elmar on the other hand is just wonderful.
