I am at the airport, getting ready to travel all over New England. The chintzy lens cap on my Sonnar falls off and cracks. It will not go back on. No choice. Glory be. How nice it was to have no choice but to not care about always remembering to put the cap on. I'm free. To hell with lens caps except fpr storage. Free at last.

I prefer filters to lenscaps usually.

I'm with Frank, a filter and a hood is a lot more useful.

I do have a few lenses where the front element is so small, a filter is not needed for protection: Canon 28f3.5, Summaron 35f3.5, and Elmar 50 f3.5. But some front lens elements are finger magnets, like the CV40f1.4. Also, some lenses/coatings are so soft that they need to protected. (col. Summicron, Summarit, Summitar)

Got my B+W UV MRC filter on my Sonnar, I'm set.

Now go the next step and play famous photojournalist who doesn't buy his own gear. To do this, remove all dividers from your camera bag. Then remove all front and rear lens caps and, of course, lens shades if you've been using them.

Now, just throw all the equipment into the bag loosely. It may be disconcerting to hear metal against metal (or glass) for awhile but you'll soon get used to it.

Now. Don't you feel liberated?

Lens cap!!...is that all?...I thought you might have gotten the battery cover off of your Spotmatic. Well at least I see your back in the 4 digit club.;)

Reminds me of a friend....A SERIOUS surf fisherman, he carried an old knock off of a large woman's handbag with 12-20 surf plugs in it, with no dividers, no way to keep 'em from forming a fairly threatening entanglement of pointy-hooked lures. He'd pull 'em all out, then drop them on a hard surface until they came apart...

His lures didn't last too long...

Now you're talking. It's like in the 70's when women's lib took off. Burn those lens caps.
