Hi Folks, Just wanted to know if many of you have a presence on flickr. I do as johnny9fingers.
I used flikr but only recently switched to Zenfolio, I like everything about zenfolio better.

Zenfolio looks pretty cool, but I'm cheap and will probably stick with free sites like flickr unless someone points me to another primo site.
flickr is amazing, see my sig :)

I have a flickr gallery.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/26096406@N00/
My biggest complaint is not being able to format the page display to my own preferences, but considering the (currently) unlimited uploads, it suits me well enough.
WARNING: the first page or so of shots are from a DSLR! Most of the rest are from my rangefinders though ;-) Convenience and cost are my reasons for going to digital, and my money cannot stretch to an M8 or RD-1 - hence a cheap DSLR.

Do you Flickr? (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25658)
Apparently I have a flickr account, but I don't think it has any pictures in it... (?)
To me the whole site looks awful. There are some good photos, but underneath and beside them it says

Flickr is the only photo hosting site I've accessed, I guess I like it cause it's free and am too cheap to pay for it right now. But after looking at smugmug, zenfolio, and Fotki or Fokti??? I may have to cough up some cash for better presentation and a nicer site.
I'm with Colin ... I don't like the look of flickr particularly but I guess a free account is a free account ... however, I decided to part with the dollars and sign up with Zenfolio. I like the way it presents photos and when you pay for something you don't have to put up with all that dross that you get on the main page of the free sites ... they remind me of the junk mail I find in my mailbox!
I often look at some average pic on flickr that has attracted a dozen comments and try to work out why it has done so ... I see much better stuff in our gallery that often goes through without any comment at all? :)

There's a link to my Flickr in my signature.
Personally I like Flickr. I find the interface fairly clean and attractive, and I much prefer white backgrounds to the black favoured by some gallery sites. Sometime I'll probably upgrade to pro so I can have more sets, but either way I think Flickr is good value.
It's not like you're obliged to browse randomly through pages of terrible photos. I never do, preferring to look at recommended pages or to view the galleries of people who post on the forums I belong to. The single most interesting gallery I've come across belongs to tightsqueez:

I don't know, I've been on flickr for more than a year and I have no experience with the things you have mentioned. I have found a lot of amazing contacts. There are definitely people that post mundane flower shots, put them into "Flower YAYAYA" group or whatever and recieve 300+ comments with all sorts of "awards" and what not, but that kind of bull**** can easily be avoided. There are a lot of little communities on flickr and plenty of talented people who just use it display some of their art. Overall I think the way one can leave and keep track of comments, select favorites, stay updated with photos from contacts, and organize photos is really great on flickr.
Apparently I have a flickr account, but I don't think it has any pictures in it... (?)

I love flickr! The big selling point for me is how well the search feature works, which comes in very handy when I'm doing any sort of research like how well a lens, film, body, etc... produces an image. Sure, I can read all the reviews I want, but most of the time opinions are very subjective, so I prefer to see photos myself and reserve my own judgment. I've even used Flickr to research shooting locations if I've never been to the certain area or I'm looking for something but don't know where I may find it within the city. I don't think I've been to other image hosting sites that search nearly as well as Flickr, which probably has a lot to do with Yahoo.
I don't post a lot on there and what photos I do have I get very few comments, but I really don't care. It's not a popularity contest for me. I'm just contributing some of my work in case anyone is using Flickr for the same purposes I do.
Their discussion boards certainly leave a lot to be desired.
I use it a lot but only as a photo sharing tool. I haven't participated in any of the forums or comments etc. but its an easy way to see what my friends have been up to by just going to look at their pics. I also run a mountaineering and rock climbing guide service and find its super convenient for getting pics to clients of their trips with us. I can also go and look at my guides' pics of their trips with clients to see what sort of shape the local mountains that we guide are in as far as snow coverage goes. Its pretty utilitarian for me. I don't go looking for art there but when I need a photo for the company website I have access to all the guides' pics. Its pretty convenient for me.

like Gabriel noted there are RFF members in Flickr, check his earlier post on P1 for the members/flickr ID's. My flickr account is below my signature.
I get some comments. I only really like the group/catergorizations.
eg; my pic of a gig gets posted to the gig group and maybe it attracts comments from others shooting gigs who know what its like to shoot gigs. Its just that simple.

Yes I do have a flickr account. My first impresion of the main problem with the site is that it seems to be that there is waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy too many photographs, pools etc. so to stand out form the mass, it takes a lot more than just posting great photographs. I think. I dunno.

I have a account for some time and started to use it recently. I f you take your time you can find a lot of good photographer there.
I do post on flickr, because I have no time to post in many galleries, and flickr is simply pretty fast and hassle free.
I find it is a bit of a maze filled mainly with people who machine gun their digital photos without much selection criteria, but there are some valuable groups, among them the rangefinder forum, m mount, and decisive moment - esp the decisive moment classic pool, that contains only the selected photos is pretty good.
I try to look at other people photos and learn from them, when I come across something I like, I put it among my favs. This sometimes causes reciprocal interest, and this way you grow your pool of contacts, who become your restricted flickr inside flickr.
If someone puts me among his contacts, I try to look at his/her photos, and I normally reciprocate, unless the photos are a pile of digi-high-speed-machine-gun-snaps of their cat and family.
Overall, I find flickr is a place which gives you reasonable convenience and a possibility to create your own circle of interesting photo contacts where to improve your skills. My gallery link below.
here we go again.... flickr me... :-P

Link to mine in signature (same username). Like mfogiel I like the ease of uploading and organising. It's ideal for an idle git like me. I paid the subscription because I found three galleries (sets) just too restrictive.

Thanks for all the responses, but I think I posed my question incorrectly. I would like to know rff members favorite photo hosting site. But I do have quite a few flickr galleries to look at now, sad to say all my pics ore the snapshot variety but hope to change that soon.

May I ask which is the main difference between flickr and pbase ?
As far as I can tell the main difference is that on PBase, no one looks at your photos. There is no real facility for people to communicate with each other or find others with common interests as there is with Flickr. Flickr is full of snapshots, but PBase is full of super-Photoshopped plastic-looking digital shots of women posed in totally artificial conditions in various stages of undress, sunset photos, and macro shots of flowers.
PBase is a bigger pain in the ass to upload to, and also to arrange photos in. I'm probably going to let my PBase subscription lapse when the year is up; it's been a total waste of money. It's not worth it, just to be able to put my photos on a black background.
If anyone has a good argument for why PBase is worth keeping, I'd be interested to hear it.

No spam gets through to my Gmail account (almost). That's the one I use everywhere. I have made it invisible on flickr as I have here. Anyone who wants to contact me has to use the built-in flickr mail system. My Yahoo mail account, which I see as a neccesary evil, and a couple of other moribund mailboxes are scanned about once a week using Apple Mail and usually sent straight to trash.

this is probably *completely* the wrong group to post this on (especially after reading some of the logic in that leica vs medium formant inane thread) BUT, what do you guys think of this:
What happens when you post a photo on Flickr without a release. Flickr is the publisher, so the liability falls on them but I wonder if there is something in their terms of use where that falls back on the user. Anyone run into first hand experience with that?
mfunnell
08-12-2007, 21:08
What happens when you post a photo on Flickr without a release. Are you talking about model releases  I know that under Australian law (and I think this is also true under US law; other juristictions may vary) a model release is required for photos of an identifiable person when that photo is used for commercial purposes. "Commercial purposes" essentially means "advertising", including use on the cover of a book or magazine but most specifically excludes photos used for artistic or editorial purposes, even if money is paid for the work. The rule of thumb for legal bunnies like me is roughly that the photo is OK without a model release if its inside, but you'd better have a release if its on the cover.
If that's all so (and, if you're worried, see a lawyer - don't trust me), then what circumstance are you thinking of where a model release would be required for a photo uploaded to flickr? I can't think of one, offhand.
Or are you talking about something different that I've completely missed?

I had forgotten setting up a flikr gallery a few years ago, containing a handful of photos locked from public access. Discovered it by accident yesterday when poking around flikr as a result of this thread! I'd also forgotten it was a Yahoo feature... I think I'll use it and see how I like it.

mainly for the groups that have information I'm interested in; BUT, I really don't like the layout of the site (very rigid and inflexible) or the goofy awards and all the hyper comments.
As an aside, I wonder if flickr is paying for product placement in editorial content. I bought a copy of American Photo yesterday and it has a BIG layout on "12 stars of Flickr." I also have a website on Pbase, and I get far more page views there than I do at Flickr, plus it's a breeze to change the layout of my pages and change the gallery sort order, etc.

it took me a while to get into flickr. i first set up an account as a place to dump photos for friends to see, then i slowly got sucked into the community aspect of it.
spend a bit of time wading through the crap, and you find some great groups and some great photographers, then all the crap becomes invisible (until your picture hits explore and all these glittery diamond, shiny star, flickr heart comments start... :/ )

Wow. Zenfolio looks nice.
I am wary of posting anything online as it tends to become de facto public domain. So, I just use an online site for organizing and cheap printing. For that, winkflash.com does fine. I can get matte, bordered, 4x6 prints for $.06. I upload in Japan, order for US delivery, my family sees the prints and sends those that they don't select on to me in Japan. Compared to the local $.39 per glossy option, it's a nice deal for me. OTOH, their complex visitor access system is pretty crap.

I have a Flickr account - under the name mongrelnomad (link below).
My relationship with it is kinda love-hate. I've found some amazing photographers that post there, but 99% is just tat. Because there are so many people, it is an invaluable research tool (wanna know how a certain film is pushed? Want to see what a given lense can produce?), but you also tend to get completely lost. Also, most of the groups tend to be dumping grounds for images, either that or ridiculous "write a comment on mine and I'll do the same for yours" which produces such enlightening criticism and comment as "Wow. So great!" Sheesh. The worthwhile groups tend to have very harsh inclusion standards - me, bitter? Never!
That being said, it can be quite addictive. So if anyone wants to give me a little constructive criticism (or adoration), I wouldn't say no ;-)

I rather like Flickr - you get a much larger audience for your photos than you would normally expect if you simply had your own website, for much less work. To be honest, though, as I only really take photos for my own viewing pleasure I mainly use it as a research tool - what sort of photos work, what locations there are near me to shoot, discussions etc. I'm never too proud to say that I don't need a little help improving my photos.

One minor annoying thing about flickr is that it seems so biased towards pictures that look good as tiny thumbnails or that have some sort of superficial wow factor.
Take a close up photo of a couple of strawberries, pump up the saturation and contrast and lo and behold that photo will get loads of comments and favorites, but if you stick to photos of the "real" world, that is, an attempt to depict something as it actually was - which is often much more difficult to achieve - many of those pictures will get largely ignored.
Mind you, there is some good photography out there on flickr, it's just sometimes hard to separate the wheat from the chafe.

I had a free pro account for a while. Uploads were REALLY slow and they blamed it on my ISP and computer. I upload everywhere else without a problem.
My wife was teaching a class at the local Jr, High and they had to upload to FLicker . They all moaned how slow it was.
Then they wanted money for my free account. I have not been back since.
