View Full Version : Epson F-3200 or Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner
Epson F-3200 or Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner or something else?
I can't make up my mind. I'm looking for a replacement for scanning long XPan negatives, I have been using an old HP S20 but it's on its last legs.
I rather like the F-3200.
I look forward to reading your opinion.

can you buy the f3200 already?
how much is it there, over the channel?
It's around 500£ +/- 30£, available at various sellers.
Not cheap, that's why the hesitation.

Here are some reviews:

Pherdinand,
my brother and a friend of mine both have the F3200 already - the have been on sale since October last year - currrent price in Germany is a bit blow 700 Euros; both guys are very satisfied with scanning MF negs, but my brother is a bit disappointed with scanning 35mm negs, esp. color ones.

hmm
i went through one of the above mentioned reviews too
that guy is not very happy with the results neither
- and, it is certainly expensive.
Buying the F-3200 will be a waste of money, it`s not better than the 4990 in any way, in fact it lacks the most important feature if you`re scanning anything in color...
For some reason the F-3200 doen`t have ICE, a lifesaver for getting rid of dust on slides and negatives....
Hey plexi,
Could you please explain this in a bit more deatil, the disatvantages.
This thing about colour not exactly clear.
I'm dumb. :-)
Sure, hardwarebased ICE(dust and scratch removal) doesn`t work with conventional B&W films, thus the color comment.
I`ve yet to see slides or color negs as dustfree as the B&W negs I develop myself, so you`ll love the ICE function, cloning dust from skies is Photoshops is NOT very fun, and takes a long long time....
The F-3200 is esentially the 4990 in a different box, with some features you certainly don`t need(LCD -screen), the flatbed is a lot more versatile, and I`ve seen some really good results from X-pan negatives. I`m using a 4870 with mediumformat and largeformat films, very happy with it.
Here`s a LF teaser :p
Did you use a LF camera with swing for that picture (the only explanation for the weird placement of OOF in this picture...)?

I sure did, I got this amazing Shen-Hao 4x5 camera a few days ago, and I`m learning to use the various movements available on it. It`s fun! Not always very sucessful though :)
Have you looked at the Canoscan 9950 F? I have one and though I have only used it once I was favorably impressed. The bundled software is sparse, however.

I decided to go with the 4990 - when it hits the stores here in the US.

It may help to look at either the epson f-3200 user's guide http://www.manualshark.org/p/epson-2/epson-f-3200-286/ and the epson perfection 4990 photo scanner manual http://www.manualshark.org/p/epson-2/epson-perfection-4990-287/ . imo, although i have only used the f-3200 so far, both are a great choice. btw. you may want to have a look at other epson scanners also http://www.manualshark.org/b/epson-2/ . let us know what you decided to get.
