According to a different Leica site, the Leica Newsletter says this:
"As of July 27th the new firmware version for the LEICA M8 will be

My favorite post regarding the last firmware update: "I think it made my shutter quieter." Yes, I did read that. I think it was posted to the L-Camera forum. I have a feeling the poor man was serious.

It sure is funny, but isn't it possible? :cool: The M8 shutter sound is not a merely mechanical sound, is it? One should be able to tweak it then, as soon as electronical noises come into play.
I've read, from reputable sources, that the latter firmware update, made the shutter sound _noiser_!
go figure!

With the new firmware there was an alteration in the way the shutter is released. I noticed it right away after updating. I can't really say if it is noisier or less noisy, but it is different. It was also confirmed by Leica. Something about being done in two steps instead of one step when the shutter is released.
So the poor man was right. Not that it's important but he was right and not out of his mind.
I haven't read any posts about firmware crashing M8 camera's.

As many as with any firmware update with any camera I suppose... Practically nil.

That is correct, Hans The initial click was divided up into two seperate softer clicks, which kind of merge into about the same sound-level it used to be. Now I wonder if this firmware will enable a separation of the shutter release and the recocking. It was called for by many customers. In that case I will not be surprised to see many posts "it got louder" primed by the fact that the cocking is a whole lot more quiet that the release. Btw, it was measured in Leica Passion that the M8 shutter was just 1.2 DbA louder than the M7 shutter,nearly imperceptible really, so the volume of the sound, to the human ear, is far less important than the character of the sound.

Most tests on human hearing suggest level differences around 1dB are almost imperceptible to the majority of humans of average hearing. A 3dB difference would be clearly audible, though.
I only tried an M8 once, it seemed a bit loud to me compared to an M6.

That is incorrect; it is a logarithmic scale. So when 3 DbA doubles the noise ( it does), 1.2 DBA would be an increment of less than 20 %.
Speaking of Leica sound hallucinations, can anyone else actually hear their M8 buzzing when you engage the meter? I have very good hearing, and I am young enough to still have the high range. When I have the camera to my eye and engage the meter, the camera goes from silent to making a very quiet buzz. Kind of like the buzz a TV makes when it is on, but no signal is being used. The kind of sound that drives kids, dogs and me crazy but no one else seems to hear. So, does anyone else hear that sound? Try it in a quiet room if you get a chance. It actually does not bother me that much on the M8, but it was one of the first things I noticed.
Also, sometimes my M8 talks to me, mostly telling me to kill dirty, evil Canon users. But that's another thread.
Hahaha, I am serious about all but the last part. And yes, the M8 definitely sounds louder than a normal M to me, but I did not notice any difference between firmware updates.
I haven't noticed, but I haven't been listening for this noise, either. I have other electronic devices that emit that sort of sound (e.g., Palm PDA), so I wouldn't be surprised.
