Jan, have to admit that I'm hooked by how Lynx draws on wide apertures. While 14 has more complex lens, they all (1000, 5000, 14) have curved aperture blades, thus while still simple 5-blade apertures they have shape closer to circle than Electro or say, Konica Auto models. Well, when "wide open" shape of blades doesn't count. Just wanted to share observation after realizing how good Lynx'es are.

btgc, I don't shoot wide open though Gabriel, one of the RFF members does. However he doesn't shoot Yashica. I personally have grown very fond of Yashica glass in both the G series of rangefinders, the Lynx and the Yashicamat TLR's.

What do you do about the right battery for the GSN? I may use some aluminum foil and a 6 volt alkaline battery. For some reason, I have never used my GSN.

Raid - check out my June 17 blog entry, 4 LR44s are much less expensive than a a 6V alkaline and work well. You can use a screw and tape for a much more stable solution than just foil.

..check Karen Nakamura's site for a jerry rig ..

Not to be picky, but I find this entomology interesting; I remember the word being "jury" rigged from when I was a kid working on big sailing ships. Actually entomology on a ship is nomenclature :bang:

Of course there is the infamous racist "N word" version of it, but where I come from, Woodstock NY, we fixed that by calling "hippie rigging."

jan normandale
07-09-2008, 19:11
Heh, John V-V, I used to use jury rigged however I decided to do an etymological check and found jerry rigged to be the 'preferred usage' and jury rigged described as a derivative. I think it was Oxford.

Your thinman site .. very nice photography! Any with a Yashica? I saw FSU.

These sample pictures have such excellent tonality and color!

I took my Lynx 14 out only once and at night and over-exposed everything. I need to take out my Voitlander Vito B and my Lynx 14 out together sometime and actually learn to use a light meter.

For right now its mostly Olympus because the Zuikos take such excellent pictures of water about sunset, when the beavers like to come out. Last time we saw two get it on, but too far to photograph. When it got to dark and we went back to the car, they followed us as if they wanted us to photo them some more.

Right now I am trying to configure my new laptop (other got left in the rain when I went picture taking) so that I can scan the latest neggies.

Here's one from my Minster 700 which does have the f1.7 lens. I took this camera on holiday because it was going to be put on the back of a motorcycle, taken to a pop festival and exposed to saltwater, and I was scared of my III being damaged. Just as well really because everything got pretty wet, and I dropped the case front in the mud. I didn't get on too well with the Yashica. I find focussing harder than the III, and there is some haze in the viewfinder. I also find the controls a bit fiddly and awkward, particularly the linked EV which I never seemed to quite master. Nonetheless, for an old camera I'm not particularly familiar with, it did what I asked it to. I did have a separate handheld meter, but it was so inaccurate, I resorted back to sunny 16 rule without obvious problems. Overall I still prefer the III despite it's antiquated nature, but the Minster is a serviceable workhorse, and has it's own aura 'Old Skool' as one young festival goer put it.

Regards to all

john v V ; I regularly used Superia 400 ISO in my GSN. It is fine. Matter of fact it was and still is my go to C41 - 400 ISO all purpose film.

I've gotten lovely results in general with ISO 100 Superia with both my Yashica & my Nikon SLRs. The colors have a pleasing saturation (especially reds & greens), and out-of-focus areas look very smooth when it's used in combination with my GSN's lens. The ISO also gives you more flexibility with your aperture settings on a bright day.

I wouldn't recommend using it to shoot something like a snowy landscape, though–I tried it awhile back & got strangely-tinted snow (Superia Reala is probably better there). A nighttime snowy scene with various lights shining on the snow, on the other hand, can come out very eye-catching because of that color boost ;)

Maybe at f8 or f11,

Heldur, that shot almost looks like IR film! Very interesting light indeed.

Its Kodak BW400CN , there are lots of white rocks in the garden area in the front of the building so thats why it might look infrared.

I am new to film photography and BW (or any photography really besides point and shoot digital) So I am on a steep learning curve. But I have been pleased with the Yashica (original electro 35 model with the round lights in the viewfinder)

Heldur
10-25-2008, 07:40
By the way, is this film good to use? I cant buy B&W film here in Ecuador so I got it on Ebay. I also bought some negative film off an old camera technician who just cut it from a large roll and placed it in a used canister for me to use. I dont know what it is, but it seems to me a truer black and white colour but quite grainy. I need to get it developed by hand. The Kodak BW400cn seems to have a yellowish tinge to it.
Forgive my ignorance here!

jan normandale
10-25-2008, 07:54
Heldur, I regularly use Kodak's C41 BW film. I like it a lot. The advantage is you can take it to any processing lab and have it developed and printed. Conventional BW is nice and I use it too.

FWIW check out Ilford's XP2 which is also a C41 BW film. It's character is entirely different and you may like the looks of both these films used as the character of the shots dictate. Good luck. The Yashica GS/GSN is a great camera and I still use mine a lot.

Hi Jan, I was using my Yashica Electro 35 GSN. A couple of the shots above have been tweaked, cus before that they came out rather underexposed.

The GSN is really one of the most underrated fixed-lens RF out there. You can get really pleasing results with the 45mm Yashinon f/1.7 lens.

Wasn't the Zastava actually made in Yugoslavia (Serbia) ?

Zastava (AKA Yugo) were Yugoslavian, FSO Polish - both were recycled Fiat designs.

Yugos had ridiculously heavy steering for such a small car.

Great photo work - I love composition/background on 1st pic and you're right: there's something about Lynx's shutter release whatever model it's (1000/5000/14's - they all have supper smooth shutter releases).

Do you ever take color pictures? You know the lens on your 5000 is color corrected and takes fantastic color pics:)!

Take the bottom off and make sure that the screw in the middle of the large gear is tight. If it's loose it could cause the gears to slip and mess up the framing. If it's tight, there may be some serious wear in the winding mechanism. Not good...

If you can recall, I posted here and elsewhere about my Yashica Electro GX that arrived with at stucked self-timer. I tried opening it up, but stopped after realizing I might do it more harm than not. It sat on the table for quite some time and one day I decided to bent a small paper-clip and start poking around the mechanism near the ST lever. After trying many times, I managed to hit something that makes the sound of the ST running. I let it run until it stops by itself, and thank God, the ST is now free.

I managed to get a roll of expired Fuji 400 Pro at the local store and run it through. Here's a Google Picasaweb gallery of some frames from the roll. I don't quite like Picasa' compression of the picture. It seems that all pics looks flatter on Picasa than on Flickr. The link below is for the slideshow which I feel displays better than Picasa's regular browser. I will try to upload to flickr when my free bandwidth quota gets freed.

Wow, are you lucky!! Most of the ST's that I have seen fail have been caused by a spring bending up and jamming one of the gears. Yours must have just been slightly stuck.

Hi Rogier,

I used an OEM film Centuria DNP ISO 100 and ISO 200. I prefer the 200 ISO more. The colours with the 200 ISO seem more vivid. They did produce an 400 ISO. I only used it once. It was ok.

From what I understand the company stopped production. If they did it is a shame as it is or was really good cheap film.

I did nothing to the photos. What you see is what I got.

Hey Rem,

I have a question for you:

did you use any PS like post filter on your pics? You have two different color casts (presumably using same film?) on your beautifully shot pictures.

BTW, I have the same Electro 35 GS CLA'ed by Marc Hama about a year ago. I was about to load my Kodak BW400CN into GS to see how it's going to work together as combo.

Please, up-load some more pics and all the best!!

I took this today with my GS and, again, BW400CN. This is from a Costco scan. I've been playing tug-o-war in my mind lately with the dreaded digital vs film thing, and the truth I find is that I suffer from the affliction of pixel peeping. There is no question that under most circumstances I am able to get a cleaner output from Nikon DSLR, but I can't seem to let go my old rangefinders. Such a quiet joy to use compared to my digital clunker. The results aren't in. More will be revealed.

Arthur, I have an Electro 35 G and it is just a wonderful tool with all the films I've tried it with: color and b&w. What can I say. This camera is really unbelievable. If you want to try your hand with b&w processing my recommendation is to start with the grand old daddy Kodak Tri-X 400 and Kodak D-76 developer. The www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php (http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php) will tell you the details. Any flatbed scanner will do, I'm using a Canon 8800f.

Great photos from everyone. Keep them coming!

The best thing about Electro 35 in my mind is that the lens is just unbelievably good and it's really hard to get a wrongly exposured photo.

...I think the GS has a warmer color balance than the GX

This is interesting observation.

Did you use the same film in both cameras and did you take both pics with both cameras at the same time during the same lighting conditions? And how did you process your negs and scans?

What kind of film did you use to take your pics?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Arthur...

The film in both cameras was Fuji X-Tra 400.

I carried both cameras and shot each scene with both cameras.

Both rolls were processed at the same lab at the same time.

The lab did the scans and I believe it's completely automated, the scanner reads the film type from the film edge and zip zip zip, through the scanner it goes.

Each and every scene was warmer in the GS versions. You could certainly correct each camera to look like the other, but straight off the scanner, the GS has a warmer look.

I also noticed the GS is poorer at auto exposure when the scene is backlit. The GX excels in it's metering of "all situations without compensations". The GS tended to fairly seriously underexpose in backlit situations.

Sharpness is about the same in both cameras.

Viewfinder easily excels in the GX. The GS is dark and gloomy by comparison.

The GS handles better, and feels better in the hand. Shutter stroke is a LOT smoother than the GX and it just feels 'way better made' in general than the GX.

So, it's an interesting 'mixed bag' shooting the two, side by side.

Tomorrow I will post the same image, taken with the GX, won't color correct, and I think you'll easily see the image is substantially cooler than the GS version.

Once again thanks for your observations and here is my humble experience with film ISO compensation on Yashica Electro 35 GS:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2590/3947634303_a505c8dd52_b.jpg

The film was FUJICOLOR PRO 400H and I used x2 exposure compensation (film was iSO400 and I went to iSO200 on film dial). As you can see yet it wasn't enough and I would probably had to go for x4/iSO100 to get correct exposure (look at the bright sky:().

I wanna try same scene under same lighting conditions on the same film one more time to see what's going to happen.

Arthur...

I think one stop compensation on the GS looks pretty good. So it appears to be a known item that you must compensate a backlit scene with the GS.

I wish I had known that on my walk/shoot...I would have had some better backlit GS shots.

Your shot is also very very sharp!!

Have you ever investigated which aperture these camera like to the best to produce the sharpest results? It appears that they really like f5.6 and f8.0

See Ya!!

Here is the GX shot from the same scene on the stream as the GS.

You can see that it's quite a bit cooler in overall color balance. I also see that the GX chose a slower shutter speed than the GS did. In the field I figured the GX was correct and the GS was wrong, but now I am thinking the opposite. That the GX overexposes by 1 stop. The GX does however do better with backlit subjects (as was previously discussed). You can also readily see the difference in 40mm vs 45mm..!! Is the GX just a tad bit sharper..????

Thanks... I needed that information. I've read it before but cannot seem to remember it.
My particular GSN has this one little over exposure issue. I think it's due to a mis-calibrated asa dial. I've taken the top off a couple times now and the dial just sort of floats on top snug enough not to move randomly, but sometimes it follows the ring as I adjust it. On top of that, I don't really know where the dial should be positioned exactly. I could be thinking I'm setting it at 400 but really it's at 200. :bang:

Anyway, thanks for the info. :D

Jack, your pictures are absolutely amazing! The one with the apples, the one with the sundown and especially the one with the pool - I would put them all ony my wall!

Keep 'em coming like that!

Wow! Thanks so much...

Not that it matters, but just for clarification, those aren't apples... they aren't oranges either, :D they're Citrons,... melons that grow wild out in the field. They look just like water melon, except they aren't sweet. They're non indigenous/foreign melons that likely found their way here from Africa... possibly during the slave trade era. I've eaten them, but I don't think they taste very good.

I want to show you something. I've been testing equipment... cheap camera's, rangefinders, slr's, manual lenses and so forth to get some idea of what is true or not here in Internet land...
Now I really like this Yashica. It is very sharp and I think the resolution is astounding... if I can get the correct exposure for the situation, but here's a shot of the same swimming pool taken side by side with a Pentax SF-1 coupled to an SMC 50mm 1.4 that I recently picked up for about the same price as the Electro 35.
Can you tell a difference besides composition and/or maybe some PP tweaks?

I know this is a weird comparison, but it may be interesting to others as well.

Personally, I think the Yashica has the better resolution.

I'm really not familiar with film and its various characteristics, so I'm surprised by the amount of color in B/W film.
Maybe I shouldn't, but I've been de-saturating via iPhoto most of these shots because they show an almost dried blood red in the shadows. Is that normal? But then, what is the point of buying special (more expensive) B/W film if I'm going to de-saturate it once it goes digital?

I had a yashica electro GX. A fine camera, certainly. But with more difficult lighting came the need to set aperture and shutter time manually. So now I use a konica hexar.

That should be easily fixed. Unscrew the dial and take off the disc with the ASA-numbers. There should be a washer which is bend at four sides. Bend them a little more with a plier, turn the dial to the far right, put on the ASA-disc and align the smallest ASA-number (25) with the red line of the dial. When you tighten the screw you have to keep the ASA-disc in place to keep it from turning, for example by sticking a needle or small nail into the little hole on the ASA-disc (marked with a red oval on the picture below). That should do it.

Not that it matters, but just for clarification, those aren't apples... they aren't oranges either, :D they're Citrons,... melons that grow wild out in the field. (...) They're non indigenous/foreign melons that likely found their way here from Africa...

I smell a new horror movie coming up: 'Attack of the Killer Melons'!

Can you tell a difference besides composition and/or maybe some PP tweaks?

Aside from the composition I only see a difference in contrast (is this due to the post processing?) and the depth of field. I like the one taken with the Yashica better, mainly because of the higher contrast. It has a more crisp look to it which fits perfectly to the chrome and the water.

Here's another from the same roll as the previous shots of Kodak BW400CN.

The Kodak BW400CN is not a 'real' B/W film but a film that can be developed like any other color film in the C-41 process. Therefore developing the film is much easier because you can give it to any laboratory that developes color film and pay the same amount as for color prints. Google tells me there can be at least two possible sources for the color shades you encounter in your prints: for one the base of the film is orange like with a normal color film. When the prints are made on paper usually used for color prints you can get some color shades in your prints. Another reason might lie in the automatic of the printer. If the printer doesn't 'now' that the prints should be just B/W the same effects can occur.

But you should google that for yourself. It's a little bit difficult for me to describe the problems with this film in English.

Anyway - other people have also encountered the same problem and maybe someone has a good tip which true B/W film to use in order to get real B/W prints.

Kodak's BW400CN film has an orange tint to the film base, designed to permit it to work best when being printed onto RA-4 paper in mini-lab machines.

If you try enlarging these negatives onto MG silver paper in your home darkroom, you won't be able to get good tones because the orange base acts as a severe contrast filter for the MG paper. Hence, Kodak's C-41 B/W film is not "amateur-friendly".

OTOH, Ilford's XP-2 Super, also a C-41 B/W film, has no orange tint to the film base, and prints nicely onto traditional silver paper.

You can tell which of these two companies understands the photo-enthusiast market, and which one doesn't.

~Joe

Post Script: In the future, try using the Ilford XP-2. But to salvage whatever images you've already exposed on the Kodak film, try using graded printing paper, which shouldn't be as color-sensitive to contrast as would MG paper. Select a medium-high contrast grade, maybe grade 3. Just guessing; I haven't done this with Kodak BW400CN. I prefer to give my money to the company that supports us amateurs.

Post-Post Script: I've studied Kodak's website over the years; they don't officially recognize the enthusiast amateur as even existing. It's either "pro" or "amateur" for film; amateur implying quick printing on minilabs, with dumbed-down color film that doesn't even have an ISO rating. They don't recognize that there is a potential customer base (who have subsequently given their business to others, like Ilford, Adox, Foma, et al) who are as sophisticated in technical knowledge as the "pro", but still prefers to print at home, but may want a mini-lab to process the film for them. Plenty of niche markets here that they've totally ignored. That, and in 2005 when they ended their B/W photo paper business.

Wow, people, all this information is truly appreciated.
I followed your directions, bundok, and it was a piece of cake. The asa dial is in the correct position now, although I have no idea why Yashica made those dials to float like that when a simple tab or pin would have solved the issue.

Anyway, thanks.

And JoeV, I guess I have a lot to learn about film. Back in the day, I never bought prints because slides were cheaper... and today I've been forgoing prints and developing straight to CD's. Why? Because it's cheaper. Same reason I shoot with a Yashica and an XA. They're cheaper. Olympus e-520? Cheaper. Manual lenses? Cheap. Scotch? Bottom shelf cheap. Women? Why else would I be so cheap?

Here is a shot taken from my CCN. I shot this using Acros, I probably would have gotten better results with Neopan 400.

A colleague in work recently brought in his father's Electro 35 GSN to see if I was interested in buying it so I loaded it up with some expired Tri-X and went out in my lunch break to try it out...

Thanks Martin. I was just shooting with the Yashica to try it after the CLA. I'm quite pleased with the results so far. I need to pull a b/w film through it. Lucas loves the camera to!
