I want to scan medium format negs and slides.

I'm thinking of getting one of the above. Local prices show the 4990 at twice the price of the 4490. Do you think it is worth shelling out for the more expensive scanner?

Anyone experienced both?

Another scanner you should consider which is also fairly low priced ($199.00) is the HP Scanjet G4050. It scans 35mm negs slides, mf, and 4x5.

Epson USA has 4490 refurbs on sale right now at US $98.10. Mine should be here Tuesday. It is free shipping in the US but they could probably work out the shipping to your part of the world.

I think you got lucky. I can't find any 4490s's at all, in ytthe clearance center.

Thanks, I'll check-out the scanjet. Does it come with ICE? I'm a little wary of importing stuff over here - if the customs get their hands on it its a long wait in a communist-era room, followed by a lot of paperwork or a hefty bribe.

I have 4990, but never use the ICE options. Pehaps for scratches I will, but I prefer to work on grain after scanning.

I use the TWAIN driver. Also for 48 bit color/16 bit B&W modes

Thanks everyone, for your input. I found a good review site for the 4990 and similar spec models'
