So, in a fit of indulgence,
I picked up a sweet IIIa
with a clean coated Summar
at Adorama yesterday.
I gave it some exercise today.
Here's a scan from the first roll:

This is with the Summar wide-open,
1/100 sec at f/2, on Foma 200, EI 100.
I promise to do better
once I tame this beast.

Very nice. Looks like you got a good, clean Summar. Keep posting more.
Pretty good :) I like the Summar signature very much. Just curious: how did you process this film? ---seems like the highlight region has a pretty stiff gamma, could be the scanner...

It could well be my scanner curve you're seeing.
This is my first time shooting Foma 200. I exposed it at EI 100,
and processed it in a 1:50 Rodinal solution for 8 minutes @ 68F.

Beautiful photo! That summar look sure is pretty
You're doing well. Keep at it. The Summar must have been sent back to the factory to be coated.

I'm quite certain it's the scanner curve :)

You better send that setup to me. You stand a good chance of getting addicted to that sort of thing.

Here are two of my Summar images. I miss posted the details, but they were Summar. Forty five years ago nobody talked about the special quality of a Summar. Now when you see it you say, at the least, 'Wow', that is a different look'. Here they are: http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=64107&ppuser=8685

"Oregon vs Oregon State 1963" is a dead brilliant photograph. Thank you for pointing it out. Sanders

Thanks, Sanders McNew, but it was one of those 'lucky' shots. I took it in 1963, and I wish there were more (lucky shots) in-between then and now.
Sanders, thats a great shot. Looks like your Summar is a good sample.
Coincidentally, I too just got a Leica IIIa and Summar. Here are three from my first roll, Kodak BW400CN:

I am still shooting this Summar wide-open
onto Foma. I've not bothered with a hood so far.
I shot another photographer this evening,
Chip Willis. Here's one, fresh from the fixer:

I bought today a replacement Summar lens for the one that got stolen from me. Such threads create GAS!

I shot a British photographer, Ian Leake, during his shoot with a model here in New York. The lighting was impossible but the coated Summar, with no hood, handled it well.

Good going for a lens which was never too well regarded.

Two more. I'll stop after this, I promise.
Still shot with the Summar, maybe f/3.5, onto Foma 200.

Very nice, these old Summars . A rather particular signature. Thanks.

Very nice shots, Sanders, in this thread. I particularly like the shot above in that it really emphasizes how beautiful an older person can look if they would just relax and enjoy having their picture taken. Of course they have wrinkles and grey hair, they're old! But that doesn't mean they or their picture aren't still beautiful. I guess I may just be reacting a bit to my grandmother who complains about having her picture taken yet always frowns when a camera is pointed her way - no wonder she looks bad in pictures!

Randy, thanks for the compliment.

Hmmm...could you explain the "gamma comment" for me? Sorry, but as a newbie of sorts, I would love to know the meaning.
thanks in advance

That Summar lens looks to have some real character...
Time to put it on my research list! Great images!:)
