re-order RFF book #2 from quality printer

Let’s compile a concise list of those interested in ordering a RFF book #2 from a better printer. Brett (JoeFriday) has a lead. Please copy the list and add your name in a new post to this thread. Let’s try to get the 100 copies necessary to make this work.

“I talked to a local printer early this year to quote a reprint of the RFF2 book.. he said he could easily match our price, or even bring it down a bit.. the catch is that he requires an order of at least 100 units.. and of course distribution is up to you but I know the quality would be 10 times better than Lulu.. and as Gabriel said, their QC is in the toilet, and their motto is "the customer is never right"

keep in mind that this topic was originally introduced over a year ago.. I do still have the necessary files for Book 2, and it wouldn't be a problem getting it printed somewhere

I still have the connection with the printer from a year ago (a personal friend who owns a print shop) and I'm sure he would be more than happy to help us out

two things to keep in mind... we would need to collect all the money when the order is placed, assuming no one here wants to front us the cost.. and my printer doesn't do mass distribution, as far as I know (altho I will check with him if/when we get serious).. so the shipping procedure and cost will need to be considered

aside from that, it would be great to get some good copies of this book printed

as for Book 1 reprints.. I wasn't involved in that project.. that was handled by Gene, I believe.. so I can't say if or how that could be managed

I don't have a firm price since this topic was revived after more than a year when I first mentioned it

I'll get a firm price in a few days.. it will probably take the printer a little while to work out the cost, not having a chance to see my original copy (he lives about 100 miles from me now that I moved recently).. but I'm fairly confident the price will be around $35, give or take a couple bucks.. and not including shipping

Well, we, the fine and talented membership of RFF have collaborated in the publishing of two books. Both are currently available through Lulu.com, but Lulu's printing is inconsistent. So, this is an attempt to get the second book printed by a different source.

nearly 80% of the total RFF membership has joined since this project was completed and offered to the public.. here's the story behind the Rangefinder Book history

the original RFF book was published nearly 3 years ago, and featured the artistry of 25 of the original RFF members. The 112 page book showcases selected images from what was once a very small and tight-knit group that happened to be spread across the globe, yet shared a love of the 'rangefinder look'.

A year later, the same group of people decided that a sequel was in order, and wanted to include more people, as there were countless new RFF members with obvious photographic talent. Of course, there was no way to include everyone in a printed piece, so the list was limited to the first 100 respondents to a public offering. The result of that offering became the RFF Book 2: A Gathering

While the content of both books is clearly a winner, the online publisher we chose puts profits over customer satisfaction. The quality control is very hit and miss. Some people report great reproductions while others report very visible color casts, usually in the black and white images, that comprise the vast majority of images in the both books.

Unfortunately, that quality issue has limited our books sales to perhaps one tenth of what they would be if the quality were monitored properly.

What this thread is about, is having the second, 222 page book reprinted by a professional local printer who would print it at the best possible quality in the same manner.

As this would be a limited edition print, and given the current RFF membership of over 13,000 we should have no problem selling thousands of these. But understandably, people want to know what they're getting for their money. And I see that Lulu has taken down the book preview PDF for unknown reasons. Perhaps we can put up a preview here (altho I can't seem to get it down under 3MB.

Lulu doesn't keep stock. They are an on-demand printer. So, you order one; they print one.

The first book was pretty decently printed. The second book much less so.

In the meantime, Lulu also started working with a printer in Spain to service Europe as the shipping costs from the USA were prohibitive. However, this Spanish printer sucks eggs. While the US printer made at least an effort to get things properly calibrated (at least, it seemed so from the print quality of book 1), the Spanish printer does not. IIRC everyone who got their copy from this printer complained about the poor quality.

As this is a "local" printer I don't believe they will be shipping the book themselves. We are I think hoping for the good graces of a volunteer, Brett or someone else to ship the books. You can assume that shipping will be the cost of packing material plus the postage which can be estimated at USPS.com. Brett will be checking with the printer and I am sure he will be posting what he learns as soon as he can.

Out of curiosity, if there was a option to do a reprint of RFF1 in conjunction with RFF2, would that help keep costs down as well (or atleast make the print order worthwhile), particularly in the event we do not meet the 100 order target? I'm going to see if I can locate one - there's a million of them online but I've seen one that was done by a photographer here in the t-dot and it looked VERY professional and was REASONABLY priced too - like hard cover for $50 / book.

I just got a book of my monochrome images done by mypublisher.com and they all have a strong blue/green cast. This despite setting them all to monochrome in their publishing software. So beware. It wasn't that cheap either.

I can't stand UPS, DHL or any other courier service! Too expensive to begin with, and the time gained is mostly lost in depot or waiting Customs clearance (for which they charge you a hefty fee as well) or because they don't deliver on Saturday or deliver it when I'm not home (and changing the delivery address takes 2 days extra, one to make the chance and the other to get things delivered if they don't foul up!).

I will say the printing was better than my RFF Book #2 (which was pathetic, so that is not saying much), but it is not even close to, say, a Sharedink book in quality.

If I remember correctly, I was either the first or one of the first to receive the RFF #2 book and was the original posted on the quality issues. My copy is purple. That is not a mis-print. The B&W's are "Purple & White".

I would be very happy to get another copy by a quality printer.

I think the problem with a lot of these book sites is they don't really incorporate decent colour management in the workflow - presumably to simplify things for the consumer. I looked yesterday at mypublisher and they say that you should make sure all images (including monochrome) are in 'sRGB or RGB' colour space - this is pretty meaningless. They can't even handle grayscale files. This just goes to show that you probably have no idea what the images are going look like in the final product and with black and white this makes things even worse.

If you are going to do this venture surely it is worth finding a publisher that can deal with these colour management issues.

I hear you.
Shared Ink (or for that matter) any of the other top quality album producers (even Asuka etc.) would probably offer a better option but at 222 pages it's going to be expensive.

I am willing to try out a small book first - this could take me a while but if I have time this week I can hopefully slap together some shots from the montreal trip and put it to print - only a 12-20 pager - as a test book with "My Publisher".

I'm willing to look at Blurb as well but that's 2 strikes against them here and especially based on your recommendation since you know the type of quality we're looking for (i.e. printing coffee table books). I'm going to also get in touch with another photographer I know to see where had his book published as well.

Having worked in printing in a past life :) I can say most certainly that the set-up and make-ready for 4-color offset is not justified for a run of 100.

This is most likely a demand shop using commercial quality color laser printers, but paying more attention to detail than Lulu.

We have one very nice color laser here at work, and we occasionally will do short runs of things like brochures on it, and the quality does rival that of 4-color offset. In fact, I think the photos are cleaner, since the laser uses (appears to use) the variable pitch dots, and offset shops (often still) use the fixed pitch halftone screens.

I really fail to see how it's difficult to get a more or less normal B&W print. This is not rocket science. I can do quite normal appearing B&W prints on the old HP 720 printer and various other ones. Certainly that shop has at least one "smart person" on staff who can adjust this.

I would think it would be a minimum - we were looking for 100 orders to make a minimum print run originally I think.

So "the more the merrier..." I'd guess.
