Sweet! Shutter works fine? If so, you're good to go... for the price of a roll of film!!!

so, I'm done, again. No new gear on the horizon or on the radar for me.

Hmmm, sounds like Creeping GAS.
Def'n: The situation in which GAS leaks very slowly; manifested as small, incremental purchases.

Give-away deals and small stuff doesn't count. I used to buy ANY camera that was a good deal. Now I can walk away from everything except great deals on the good stuff.

You need to make a list of the cameras that you are looking for so that when you buy something else you could put it on the list and it would be ok.
Frank: Your GAS inspiring garage sale postings will drive me to ... garage sales!

I've got that list in my head, Steve. :)
Also this morning, for 25 cents, a Nikon AF P+S with 28mm lens, that takes AA batteries.
Olds Trumpet, serial number dates it to 1975, a Fullerton instrument.
$25
Olds Trumpet or old strumpet? :)
Being a trombone player, I am not sure I can tell the difference Frank.

Oh, I thought you were talking about something else.
Last Saturday it was the Rollei, this Saturday I found a Rotel RA-84oBX4 integrated stereo amp for $5.

Today I saw a Leica for five bucks. I talked them down to three,
but it was just an old screw mount so I didn't take it... ;)

Jeez...gotta start making the yard sale rounds....
Rats. Whenever I go to garage sales all I find is junk. I have too much junk. My junk is usually better than garage sale junk. I've been to two recently: Really misused and abused OLD Canon FL SLR stuff. The only thing of interest was a 50mm macro with 25mm extension tube. It was not the mint S.S.C. version that I purchased new in 1975. It looked like it had been used for a puck during the Stanley Cup games. The sale before that, I found a BNIB Velbon tripod. I was interested enough to open it. A video head. The nerve!
I never find anything even as good as stuff I already have. Rats!

One day every year the nearby town I used to live in held a "cleanout day".
That night sanitation would pick up anything put out at the curb;
there was no need to schedule a bulk pickup.
I would always drive around the wealthy areas early, before the trucks.
I got some really nice, like new stuff for free - bicycles, appliances, furniture.
Wish I still had a van or station wagon...
Chris
Sweet deal, Frank. I had some luck last weekend (it was raining today):
"Redheads" Joel Meyerowitz, 1st edition hardbound, 50 cents. :)

The *real* bargains at the weekend yard sales around here
are found at the curb on Monday morning... ;)
Chris
A few weekends ago I found a polaroid sx-70, in great condition, for 10 bucks. There were two, too. The guy was also selling a whole lot of 8mm and 16mm film cameras. But I didn't get any of them.
If it wasn't raining today (and if it wasn't rose parade day), I would have made the rounds. It's fun.

My brother-in-law went to a garage sale about 6 years ago and I wasted the entire day the following Saturday helping him move it 10 miles to his farm.

My yard sale find this morning was a Mamiya M645 with 80mm f/2.8, PD hood, strap, grip, and 2- 120 inserts for $85
I also picked up a Wollensak Rapax syncromatic shutter with Raptar 127mm f/4.5 4x5 len for $20
Good one, Colyn!
The shutter/mirror slap of this thing is enough to wake the dead..
It looked like it had been used for a puck during the Stanley Cup games.

Could somebody please tell me where the hell these garage sales are? In my area all I see are "very Brady" lamps, beat up old furniture, somebody's old shoes, bad paintings of vases with flowers in them, picture frames, old rockin' chairs, computers from 1992, somebody's old glasses...

We obviously shop at the same sales. You forgot old games (Twister is a staple), broken tools, stuff folks are too lazy to put in the trash.

Nick & Wayne, now I know where you live! Right here in Toronto! ;- )
One does have to put in some time searching and going to several sales (5-10) on many Saturdays in order to eventually find something worthwhile. Like photography though, I enjoy the process as well as the end result. It is time spent together with my son who also enjoys "garage sailing". It is enjoyable to meet and chat with folks, and interesting to see other people's "stuff" from a sociological point of view.
One of the advantages I have is knowing a lady who makes her living buying from estate/yard sales and selling in her own shop. She will call me as soon as she spots something I may be interested in. She's even been known to hang onto a camera till I get there so nobody else can get it.

FrankS,
My kids HATE it when I stop at a garage sale...therefore I go by myself and save them the embarrassment...For me it's a Treasure Hunt Adventure...:D
So, it's Friday night and tomorrow is another garage sale morning. I ask myself, am I feeling lucky?

My father loves to buy old bird cages in Garage sales. He had bought 4 at one point and didn't let us thrown them away.
damn, I wish they had garage sales here, might be able to find a beat up old shanghai leica copy for 20 yuan :)
Today: a box of darkroom stuff for $1. funnels, 2 stainlesssteel film developing tanks and 35 and 120 reels, film clips, polycontrast filters, contact printer, multi frame size easel, box of Ilford paper, Kodak book.
Kodak Pleaser (Polaroid)- free
Bell and Howell movie projector - free
I'm looking for a daylight 4x5 sheet film developing tank complete. Found one last month but it was broken beyond use so I left it where it sat.

I've been looking for stainless steel developing stuff for ages because my plastic stuff is crappy. I haven't bought new reels since I got the tanks and it's starting to show. They were cheap tanks anyway, but I didn't think they were THIS cheap.
So yeah, Frank...do you need those tanks? :D
Nope. They're yours if you pay the postage.

Tuesday it's yours. YAY! I'll give you my address when I give you the postage.
Course, now I'll have to learn how to load stainless reels. Should be much less annoying than my plastic ones, though. They won't even load a full 36-38 exposures anymore without a fight.

Ya know? FrankS, you've inspired me. I live in a 'burb of Phila., PA that's spittin' distance from the ritzy-titzy "main line" Bryn Mawr, Villanova, etc., etc., etc... I need to take a bike ride around those parts one sunny Sunday afternoon. "Yeah, sonny. This was my late husband's Leeeka. He coveted that camera, God rest his soul. I'll let you take it off my hands for $1.25. I got got a couple lenses in that box over there. I'll charge you $0.50 apiece."
Today there was yard sale up my block. Glasses, lots of glasses. Eye glass cases, old board games, and a banged up 10 speed bike. No cameras.

I just sprung for a Hewes reel. Haven't shot 120 since I did, waiting (and waiting and waiting) for my Iskra to get back from Certo6. My plastic stuff is fine with 35. 120 - it either sucks it right up on the first shot, or I'm in for an ordeal.
I'm happy with my plastic Patterson tanks/reels for both 35 and 120.

No camera equipment worth getting today, but I did grab a mostly working (easy for me to repair/restore) Dual scale Hythergraph (humidity/temperature) recorder. Nice brass drum, working clockwork drive.
Of course, I don't need it.
But it's cool.

Stephanie- Steel reels are like a bike- hard at first, but then simple as can be. A half hour spent with an expired roll and you'll feel like you've been doing it for years. The keys are not to clip the film to the center and to cup the film just enough to fit between the spirals. Oh, and have the lights out.
Garage sale days are great. But I never find camera stuff there. Maybe I go to the wrong places? But still these markets are great to take pictures. It is may favorite location for BW street shots at the moment. They sell everything from glue and socks, to fake DVDs and stolen bikes. Crazy place with a lot of people and some good pictures to take. Sometimes they offer a broken Olympus XA2 for $50.:).Right.
Stephanie. Heh, heh, heh. :)

There's been a number of enlargers posted on craigslist lately but the owners are somewhat proud of them. Too pricey for me.. Someone even posted a Mamiya C33 with 80 for $995..

Colyn,
I have a FR Cut-Film-Rack Developing Tank that I bought a few years ago and have never used...it's used and old but complete and it's yours for the shipping cost...I was lucky enough to get a Nikor 4x5 Tank on Ebay for about $80...so the FR never was used by me...

======================
I live in a medium-size town and haven't had much luck either at yard sales in finding camera stuff but two years ago, at a local garage sale, I told the owner that I liked his house and he said it was for sale -- so I bought it and we've been very happy with it...
Hoi laptoprob !
You are forgetting Queens Day of course :) I found a perfectly clean LPL Dayroll bulk-loader for €4,00 this year. Also a p+s Olympus Mju for €7,50.
Stuff I didn't buy was a Vivitar 35mm enlarger, a very pristine Praktica LTL3, and assorted lenses for 35mm slr's which I don't own. Plus the usual crop of "worn-out bakelite cameras" from ages past. All these were on different stalls in different spots throughout the park, so I don't think they were connected.
Marktplaats is a very handy site, but I have never bought anything photographic on there (yet).

I just found out (from a newspaper article) that the Goodwill stores are not all equal -- there's a "high-end" Goodwill store in Minneapolis (the article said) that all the local good stuff gets sent to, while the outlying stores get plastic Kodak P&S's with broken knobs. Scales fall from my eyes!

Passed up a $400 Minolta XD-5 this past weekend but took home a Agfa Karat w/50mm f/2 S-K lens for $20

I stopped at a garage sale this morning and while doing a quick glance around the tables...there it was...a camera wrapped in it's case...I could tell it was an older camera but couldn't tell what it was...my heart beating a little faster now...I picked it up...metal not plastic...hurry up...open it...now...Got the snaps loose on one side and got a quick peek...chrome body...Pentax???...Yup, Pentax ME with a 50mm 2.0 filter and lenscap...
Started to give it a good look and saw it was missing a few things that shouldn't be missing...Film Advance Lever and Hot Shoe...but then the guy assured me "It still works..."

Hello..I joined the RFF just this morning in an effort to post a reply to this thread. i think it is wonderful you are able to discover these treasures at such great prices. Now if you would be so kind to entertain a different thought....Please think about taking one of your working cameras or even a kit ( it might even be worth some money) and giving it away ( for free) to your nephew or grandkid or neighbor's kid. Don't think about giving them a piece of crap.. give them something that they can learn photography with... and a roll of b/w film will not kill you. And if you are knowledgable obout film development and printing... change their lives forever! Make them this deal... they may keep and use this kit as long as it suits them but they may not sell it. It must be returned to you or given to another youngster with your approval. Then take twenty minutes to examine their first roll of prints and get ready for a SMILE. I make you this promise...do this for just one kid and it will help change his world. Do this for just two kids and it will change your world...
Beautiful first post. Welcome, Randall!
Heh I gotta say I have yet to ever find any sort of good camera equipment from a garage sell or flea market. The stuff i find in the flea market is generally utter trash and not worth the insanely high prices venders offer it for.

garage sale find this morning:
very clean (dare I say mint?) Canon QL 1.9 with hard plastic case, matching Canon flash, and manual for $10. Meter works. UV filter protected lens from cleaning marks. This is a great daily knock around camera. It offers shutter speed priority auto exposure (with trap needle feature) and non-metered manual.
Hi Frank,
How many such basic cameras do you now own?
As for fleamarket buys, I once found a Yashica Lynx14 for $20.
My best pawnshop buy may have been a Nikon F2.
My best used camera buy from someone local was a Leica M3 set and on another time a Leica M4MOT.
Raid, I used to have something like 8 of this type of camera, but then traded them all for a Bessa R a few years ago. I only have a few now.
Frank,
Then you could collect additional ones for an upgrade sale to a Bessa R4?

1. Tiffen Series 6-B Lens Shade (Vented) w/ Tiffen Series 6 Adapter Ring Summarit F:1.5
2. Luna Pro Variable Angle Attachment for Luna-Pro w/ Instruction booklet (very nice condition just needs cleaning inside)
3. Gossen Pilot w/case (Like new)

I haven't been to any flea markets or estate sales lately (weather, family, sleep, etc. all seem to be getting in the way) but did have a fair amount of luck over the last year or so. I'm usually on the prowl for old woodworking tools and jazz LPs, but every so often some photo gear turns up.
1> Nikon S RF + 50/2 Nikkor, $60. Slow speeds all fire at 1/20. Otherwise fine.
2> Bessa 6x9cm RF, $20. Perfect condition.
3> Graflex Super Graphic, $20 (sold for $250 on ebay, since I already have one)
4> Olympus OM-1, winder, 50/1.4, 28/3.5, and accessories - $30 (sold on ebay, already got one of those too...) Was fine except for some prism foam rot.
5> Voigtlander Vitessa 35mm, $5. Seller thought it was jammed, but he just didn't know how to work it. Fine condition.
6> Vivitar 285, $5. Batteries were dead.
And just last week I snagged the Omega D3 enlarger & all the darkroom gear from work. Didn't even know there was a darkroom in my lab, but they needed the space and were just throwing the stuff out... I guess I had to pay about $7 in gas to get the car into the city and back out, hope it's worth it.
I'm going to try to get out again next year, but with the cost of gas I better start looking for a new job. When my buying was at it's peak I could do 300miles a weekend hitting estate sales all over the state, then the flea markets...

It was an private estate sale, both out of state....
1956 Leitz Summarit f1.5 50mm Excellent Plus/Mint Minus with both caps and a Bolex Cine adapter $95
and an all original 1951 Leica IIF BD also Excellent Plus/Mint Minus with original Elmar caps, case and original flash unit and instruction manual $125 - (it`s worth $650/$700)
(Leica IIFBD is the "sleeper" collectable Leica with only 8400 made between 1951 and 52 - insiders know about this one)
It needs a CLA, new curtains and viewfinder work, but it looks near new, just a few little scuffs, no dents or dings, another museum quality looking camera that`s sat around too long that`s all
Photos soon.....
Tom

I found a mint Canon A1, w lens, like new everready case, manual and tele-extender for $60. Fresh battery and shot a near perfect roll of velvia first time out. Only problem was my composition, but understand I was testing the camera, not going after a Pulitzer. This has not been my only positive garage sale experience.
