Hmm, I've seen folks keep lots of stuff on their straps, but with out a bigger picture, I can't narrow it down any more than one of the following:
Filters
Film
Light meter--if you don't like the camera's meter?
VF case
Range finder
Lots of SR44 batteries
More unusual:
A place to put a rain cover of some kind
Energy bar
Phone
Mp3 player
Condoms
Speedo
Though I like Eugene's answer the best, so far.
