In the course of comparing William's Kiev 5 experiences with mine, I've gotten curious about what normal lens I have on my camera!

It's a bit tricky to spell out, because it uses three non-Roman characters: one looks like an F without the middle bar; another looks like an A without the crossbar; and the third looks like a backwards N. If we substitute a regular F, A and N for these, the name would be:

FEANOC-94

Does that make any sense at all? Can anyone translate/Romanize this name for me, so I'll know what the heck this lens is? Incidentally, it's a 50/1.8... and while I'm not too impressed by its performance, I'm kinda stuck with it, since the Kiev 5's nonstandard mount won't accept older Kiev 50s!

Got it!

Natalia, our own Bayou Russian, kindly and promptly informed me that this lens is a Helios.

It a Helios.

The Cyrillic characters are G E L I O S.

If I understand the pages I've found on the web correctly (always an if when Bablefish is involved) that's the Helios-94 50/1.8 lens. I think it's a earlier formulation of what would become the Helios-103 on the 4am/4m models.

Why do I hear 'Kalinka' played Zydeco-style suddenly inside my head...? ;)

So far, I haven't found my inability to read Russian any stumbling block to using my Kievs or Zorkis. Since all of my Russkis were ordered on-line, I saw ahead of time what they were.

Speaking of that Industar-103, Yuri at Fedka sent me one in addition to the J-8 that came with my Kiev-4a. His reasoning was that there were "slight cleaning marks" on the Jupiter. I call it going the extra mile - he's great to do business with.
