The plan was to take my M6, with a (freshly acquired) 35mm Lux and some HP5, to Ireland in July- but so far, no dice on that glass...
Perhaps my trouble is the M8- as a 35 becomes essentially a normal? But good grief! I've been trying to buy a used 35mm Summilux ASPH for months and months and haven't seen one on here, or on photo.net, for a small age.. Is there some hidden source? Other places I could be checking?

Lux pre asp or asp 35 or 50 are not high volume. Patience is required especially if you want a shooter with perfect optics cheap.

Actually, I did try KEH yesterday. They used to have a screen or two full of 35mm Leitz lenses. Now only a few and I think only 1 35mm Summicron. What happened?
Meanwhile, the Voigtlander Nokton and Zeiss Biogon are alive, well, and fairly plentiful.
One of the problems is that pre-ASPH Summiluxes has become the dreaded collectible! I saw them at outrageous prices in Tolyo last month. Late 1990's had asking prices of $1500 and up. The Aspherics were about the same! The really early 35/1,4's are even more expensive, but they always were a bit of a collectors item, particularly in Japan were they value "bokeh" and that lens had it in *****s. The infamous OLLUX hood alone was going for $400 and up as this hood rivals Nikkor RF lenses hoods for being prone to falling off and getting lost. Your alternative might be the 35/1,2 Nokton which is a/cheaper and b/1/2 stop faster and c/ as good, if not better than the 35/1,4 Asph and considerably less flare prone than the Summilux 35 Asph.
I use a J12, flares less than my lux, most of the time, and if you dont need the 1.4 reduces the risk, of $>>> for replacement. I've not seem a lux with perfect optics, I could afford for some time now, like about ten years wondered why, Tom A is useful to have around to explain. Ta.

I'll keep an eye on KEH- it sounds as though their stock turns over quite quickly.
I'd be all over the Voigtlander 35mm 1.2, except that it's almost twice as long and twice as heavy as the Summilux. I know, for the extra money I could get another smaller 35 as well, but I'm looking for a lighter single lens kit.
As for slower lenses, the extra stop is make or break for me much of the time.
I don't mind paying the market rate for a Summilux ASPH in good shape- I'm not holding out for a bargain, as I want one for my trip.

If it is small and light you are looking for you might consider a 40mm NOKton or a 40 mm SUMMIcron, or both PLUS a great big 35mm NOKton , for less than a used 35 SUMMIlux ASPH will cost you.
And just to prove I can be just as much of a git as the next guy - TTFN!

The 75mm Summilux has dissapeared too.
I sold one - nothing special, but pristine - on eBay a couple months back for over $2200. One sold last week for over $2300 and it was described as having stripped screw heads from a CLA. Desperation makes fools of us all.

Regardless, there is currently a 35 'lux pre-ASPH on the 'bay, currently at $1200, with forty minutes left.

There's a second hand lux asph on www.ffordes.com (which is in Scotland) for £1399. They're a very good dealer, but no idea if the price is good.

Cheers- that's the one Magnus PM'd me about. Trouble is that it ends up slightly more than $3000 US to get it to me, and at that's only a few hundred less than a new one from B&H. (I feel bad for you eueropean photographers- kit consistently seems more expensive over there...).
Please keep me in mind if you see a 35 Summilux that you're not buying yourself. :D

Why is it that the 35/1.4 Summilux is so much bigger than a Canon 35/1.5? It doesn't seem that the difference in maximum aperature is great enough to account for the size difference. :confused:

OK--"Fletch". Is a nickname or abbreviation that important? Not unless you work for Webster's or live in "Her Majesty's realm" I guess.
I am starting my Leica aquisition program but the prices that some people, esp. on eBay are asking for the 35 and 75 are outta sight!
Give it up. There are too many good 35mm lenses around to go chasing the silly crazy priced lenses. The 75mm Leitz lenses are virtually in a niche of their own. The C/V 75/2.5 is very very good. There are very nice 85mm lenses from the Other Guys, Canon & Nikkor. If you can do without the extra stops, go for it.
Here's a thought: Buy sensible priced 35mm & 75mm now. Hang on to the Summicron-Summilux money. If, after using the first pair and being very objective, you still desire the Leica lenses, be prepared to pounce in an instant. Sell the first lenses for what you paid for them.
The problem for me is that I have gotten used to using very fast SLR lenses and don't want to lose anymore light than I have to... that said I probably won't be getting a Lux anytime soon unless I get lucky...:mad:
