May Day, Tuesday 1 May 2007, is a big occasion in many places. In other places it is likely under the radar.

Following on from our Equinox day how about some of us making photos on May Day this year?

Mine will likely be old guys with dignity and red flags who remember the 1974 revolution, in a ramshackle parade.

From other parts of the world we may see celebrations, or parades, or a regular Tuesday.

One (1) photo per member typical of May Day wherever you are.

Respond if you're in for this. And if we get some interest we'll ask Stephen to set up a 'May Day 2007' gallery for our photos.

(I know that in Britain 'May Day' falls on Monday 7 May 2007. Go figure. If you're there feel free to photograph on that date instead. Perhaps photos of the traditional queues outside IKEA?)

Sweet idea. I won't participate most likely. I don't even know if there's anything done on that day here in Holland. Now Mongolia... that would be another story. :)

As every year I'll be on a party april 30th, depending on the band I might bring a camera.

In some places it will be a May Day event, and in other places it will be a regular Tuesday and no more. Let's illustrate that contrast.

Having a birthday in May- Cinco de Mayo actually- I tend to be rather aware of all things "May" and I am familiar with May Day; but no one where I live celebrates it (the SE of the USA, NC more particularly).

I will see if I can come up with something.

Hmm.. I may be interested in this, as I'll probably be in the city with my cameras. But is it a problem if my shot is from 30th April, as it's common here in Finland to celebrate on the eve of May Day? If things goes the same way as last year, my photos will be taken mostly in rallies and demonstrations (my May Day 2006 gallery (http://www.sikaheimo.com/vappu06/)).
So:
18 Lotari, something (probably demonstrations) in Helsinki, Finland

PS. I'll bring my QL17 with me, but probably most of the photos will be taken with Pentax dslr and Mamiya m645 medium format slr, is it a problem if the best photo happens to be from slr and I'll post it?

Mission accomplished shot 2 rolls of fuji 1600 color and a roll of neopan 400
Awesome scene inside an ancient temple I'm a little afraid about the one 40 shot roll of 1600 natura I shot with the Contax T. I'll soup the 400 tonight and pick up the natura tomorrow afternoon.

Quite a strange experience, this woman next to me was trying to get a photo of the monks making a sand mandala with her cell phone but it was too dark so I told her I'd send her some photos if she gave me her email address. I had just finished a roll of neopan 400 and put the smoking camera away and grabbed another fresh camera loaded with natura, when a temple official comes up and tells me no photos. I could take photos however if I had a press pass. Say what? I couldn't let the photo op get away so I went to the office to see about getting one. Turns out the person in charge is an old friend of mine. In moments I've got a press armband and I'm in like Flynn.

From the Sacred (Tibetan monks) to the profane (Mongol pop stars) here is a shot from Monday's Mongol Fest in Tokyo:

Steamer - you had some lovely light for these shots, have you any more in your gallery?

Jon - I remember seeing the panoramic images of this parade, I liked those but agree that the cross processing has worked well here.

Mine may take a little longer, I'm all out of wetting agent after my cat knocked the bottle over about twenty minutes ago(!!)...with the hard water in this area I'm going to wait until I get a delivery sometime next week.

I've enjoyed having a little shared project to look forward to, photograph and share the differing results...maybe we could have a regular project thread every month ot so.

OK, no May 1st photos. It's regular boring day in Holland anyway. But April 30 is Koninginnedag, which is one big celebration, especially in Amsterdam. I took photos but still have to develop and scan the films.

So, I missed out on Equinox and the Euro RFF-Meet, but I'm not about to make the same mistake three times this spring! :) This thread flew under my radar until just about now, but I am hard at work scanning the images from the workers unions+political organizations' walk in Trondheim yesterday. Negatives look a bit dense, but I hope to save a few of the better frames.

Looking forward to seeing more great shots!

It didn't wash when I was at school either!

I actually have to lock myself in the bathroom when processing films, especially when I've got my hands in the changing bag - it's just too much of an opportunity for my cats to attack my hands or try and get high on the dev fumes.

Not good!

As RML mentioned before, May 1st is not a special day in The Netherlands, let alone a National Holiday. So, as I couldn't make it to go abroad (Antwerp, Belgium) where May 1st is celebrated, I stayed in Amsterdam and took this picture.

The event was peaceful and actually rather dull. I've never gone to a demonstration before, so maybe that is why.

Here's my May Day, it was quite happy. I went to see what EuroMayDay demo looked like this year, it was much calmer, not many people arrested and there was just one small incident between people and police (actually that happened after the demo had ended and people were just hanging out in the beach).
So, here's my photo:

(just click it and it'll be bigger)

I've got more photos of this May Day on my website (and some on flickr too):

PS. That was taken with Pentax *ist D and Sigma 24/1.8, I'll look later on what my Canonet saw, if there's something worthy of posting, I'll show them later.

What a fantastic spread of photos of what happened where we were on Tuesday 1 May 2007.

It varied so much around the world.

Some of us saw celebrations, and some of us saw a regular day.

If we had the resources these photos would a great book or website gallery.

OK, just posted the pictures I took today and yesterday at the Hastings Jack in the Green, a May holiday festival commemorating the start of summer.

Pictures here (http://www.adweb.co.uk/ian/photography/HastingsJack/index.html)

More background about the various characters involved in the festival can be found here:

Mainly it's an excuse for lots of drinking and morris dancing.

Didn't we all see that day very differently?

What xpro did you use?

JOn:
I loaded my agfa isolette with a cheap colour print film ... then I asked the lab to develop (without cutting it) as slide film. The result is like having old shots badly preserved. Next time I'll try to load slide film and develop it as print film ... and see what happens :)
You can see other experiments with this tecnique here (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40447) but something went wrong anyway ... :bang:

yes Jon we all saw very different May Day. I too did a lot things, it has been a very busy day...
first I took a portrait of Gaia then, we needed to have the water tube repaired. We had luch at a local fair (still have to develop the roll...) and then went for a walk on the lake after a coffee in a bar. Later we got back in Lucca for a political rally (still have to develop the roll...)... Ended the day watchin a movie at a cinema ...

nico

here the last until I get the last roll developed from the lab. :)

forget to mention ... all b/w photos are coming from an expired colour film converted and cropped ...

nico: re the xpro.

My stock of expired E6 is down to the last 30 or so rolls now.

I'm deciding between buying a load more old E6 to xpro C41, or whether to buy old C41 and go with faded color.

Unfortunately old C41 xpro to E6, such as you've been doing, is not an option.

Well three days after this thread was last seen and finally I've pulled my finger out. I've put some of my May Day photos into my "At home with the English" album - I'll try and get them into this thread soon but I always seem to end up with attached thumbnails rather than big pics. It's also 3am and I've got work tomorrow!

There's some great images on here, particularly strong as a body of images covering the globe. Hopefully I can join in the next event in a more timely manner!!

OurManInTangier:

That 'At Home With The English' album is a very competent and coherent piece of work.

You have a style that comes through in every photo, the confidence to get up close, and an eye for the detail.

All in all a very nice viewing here on a weekday morning, and an inspiration to do better myself.

OurManInTangier

Thank you Jon, that's very kind.

I'm not sure its particularly coherent, it feels likes it fast becoming a dumping ground for alot of my pictures rather than anything else.

Not at all. Your photos in 'At Home With The English' show the understated side of British people in their leisure time. I am somewhat reminded of Martin Parr's photos in New Brighton, although yours are your own and not derivative of his work.

Have to agree here, though I can see OurManInTangier's point too. There are a few photos that could do with a bit of company. Bu others are very interesting sets, like the beach photos, the horse photos and the elem. school photos.

I did have a "To Bin or not to Bin" section ( I know, a poor sense of humour) but I've changed it, I think, to an "Odds & Sods" file so I may move things around and try and get some true feel together in the albums.

Thanks for having a look and commenting. Its always appreciated to hear someone else's opinion, it helps to get a fresh perspective!

Dear friends,
first of all I beg your pardon for this late post: I was so busy that I could not collect my prints earlier.
The attached pictures has been taken on May 1 2007, and shows my windband before staring the May 1 concert (I am not on the picture as I was taking the photo: usually I sit on the left side, as I play flute/piccolo).
I used my Kiev 4 with the Jupiter 8 lens, with a Kodak 400 asa B+W film developed in C41.
