Is there any chance that a new FSU contest is held during this year?
Is anybody interested in it? I believe that it is an interesting and funny way for enjoying our FSU jewels.
I would join it immediately!

Best greetings,

i am also ready for new contest. when i organized it last year it was on 5th june. we could try and ask our new boss to open a gallery earlier this year. i think we could maybe start on april 1st?
will it be for fun only like ast year - i like it like that because there is no hard feelings after that type of contest. also i think we should do voting like last year. last year i chose 12 photos and we were voting in poll for them. but i would like to include more people into this. maybe everyone could choose three photographers, and then we will choose 10 with most votes to go to final. then we could make a poll for voting between those 10 and choose winner. or we can get few judges and everyone will give 2 or 3 candidates, and then people will vote between them. any more ideas?

June 12 is National Holiday, "Russia Day" -- might be a good deadline date -- all shots in by Russia Day.

Here's last year's FSU Contest Gallery (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=6069&page=1). Lots of good shots there.

I'm in for sure! Jupiter-3 on Fed-3!

Unless I decide to use the Kiev. :D

My vote would be for FSU glass on an FSU body only, but I won't be a zealot about it.

I'm in. In what ever final form this takes. I tend towards FSU camera and lens but will happily go with whatever consensus emerges.
One suggestion: make this for bragging rights but I would be happy to get a T-shirt made to award the winner emblazoned with "I won the RFF FSU contest '07!" or something similar in the winners language and in Russian--though I'll need some translation help; don't think relying on BabelFish or Google translations would be good for this.
Is there any easy way to do "blind" submissions?

last year it was fsu camera and fsu lens.
i like the idea with t-shirt. :D or maybe some fsu camera with engraving "to the winner of rff fsu contest 07" also i think stephen can arrange blind submissions - probably he can do that in admin options.

edit: i just sent PM to Stephen to ask him to open a gallery for FSU contest

Not sure about a camera, nzeeman, I was thinking of the shirt as just symbolic for the winner.

shirt would be great. i would gladly find some cheap camera here on flea market and do the engraving but i think that postage will be too much for me. i must check with serbian post. but they always try to rip off people. i even paid a lot when i sent some LP to my friend in france. and LP dont have much weight. :( but if they tell me some reasonable price ill find something.

nzeeman ~ Would you be willing to lead out/organize all of this? If it's waay too much, I understand, but you obviously have the skills and did a great job last year + the experience."does fsu glass on a japanese or german body count?"There's lots of great combos out there that are greatly inhanced by FSU gear. Last year, we allowed [I think] a total of three entries per member. Why not go with categories for :

FSU body/FSU glass
FSU body/other glass
other body/FSU glass
We could be allowed 1 entry per category, or 3 entries in one category or whatever combination totaled 3 entries. Again, just brainstorming here to include more RFFers. Any thoughts?

i like this idea - maybe we should make 3 galleries then. because it will be too hard to trace equipment used for photos. but still we have to wait for stephen to give us his blessing. also i asked him to be a judge also, i was only judge last year and some members didnt like my choice of finalists. some said that i included slr - like photos and that quality of chosen is not high enough. so i thought to include more judges. of course if others dont want to do that, i will be again if its ok with others.

reagan

They could all be placed in the same gallery if entries were accompanied by camera/lens info and which category, #1, #2, #3, each pic was entered in. There's plenty of room for notes and info when uploading and it just takes a few extra moments to fill in. IMHO, it really helps our fellow FSU.RFFers when gear/film info is attached.

Thanks nzeeman for stepping up!

I'd say only FSU glass on FSU body, with one exception: if someone doesn't own a FSU body or FSU lens, then he can use one with different origin and clearly state it when uploading the photo. But that's just my suggestion - I'll accept it even if the majority agrees with CVBLZ4...

But since the body is just a box to hold film, I'll register another vote for FSU glass only.

Having just checked out last years thread (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20104) concerning the contest , The issue of whether to use FSU body and lens or some other combination was discussed at length . Maybe it would be easier all round to just follow last years format with just some minor tweaking to help improve things and make life easier for the judges ?

In the context of a contest, I'd have to disagree here.

Certainly it's more of a challenge to shoot with an old camera of limited abilities than a modern camera. The experience and the challenge are important parts of using FSU cameras (from my point of view anyway).

More importantly ... will it be allowed or will we have a separate catagory for 'FSU Digital?'

I don't disagree that using the FSU cameras is a great part of the experience. I was just thinking FSU glass lets those who have the lenses, but not the bodies participate.
Entries could be divided into pure (body & glass) FSU and FSU lens-only categories.

I think FSU gear only. Even though I would live to use my Bessa-R, the on board light meter might be an unfair advantage against older non metered FSU cameras.

.... some said that i included slr - like photos and that quality of chosen is not high enough. so i thought to include more judges. ....

I sympathise with you, Nzeeman. What is an SLR-like photo (or a TLR-like photo)? How on earth can you look at a picture and say it was taken with a particular type of camera?

There are always different schools favouring various pictorial styles, irrespective of camera type, and there are always objections after a competition.

You defuse objections by having clear rules. But there are always undisclosed rules that hit you when it's all over (take your pick from no sunsets, no stags at bay, no soot and whitewash, no visible grain or no absence of grain, no high key, no low key, no middle key, no emulations of folding camera pictures ....).

Objections are also defused by saying judge's decision is final. And by having more judges, as you suggest. Or again, by letting all forum members vote, or just participating members etc. If necessary in more than one stage: vote for a short list, and then vote again to rank the short-listed.

we tried to make agreement about having all members voting to make a short list - but every idea we had was too complicated. we could try and think something new again this year.
also Stephen still havent responded to my private message about opening a gallery for this contest so we will have to wait a little for this contest.
maybe he dont have time to read all messages so some of the moderators could ask him to open a gallery.

I've been thinking about this since my last post and have some ideas to share.
First: we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves here--has any one heard from our Bartender about this yet?
Second, blithely hoping that it(this contest) gets an OK, some further suggestions:
While I personally like FSU camera and FSU lens, I would rather include people than exclude. So my thinking is either FSU camera or FSU lens or both. Noted in the "details" of the photo. (And I would not look askance at some one who wanted to use FSU film in whatever gear they've got. )
I think that having an "official" post images time frame is good. During that time, any one who wants to play, posts their photo to the gallery. That takes care of who's in or who's out. As I mentioned, I would like to see these photos posted blind if possible. I believe that would encourage voting for photos more than photographers.
When that time is over, we then have a collection of photos to look at. In the first contest thread, some one suggested voting by posting "I like it" comments to the photo and counting those. If there us a way to count unique comments, that would make tallying votes much easier. And eliminate having judges or polls. I dunno if that's possible with the software here or not.
If that's not possible, well I trust and like our moderators and New and Old Bartenders. Which, if I'm counting correctly is 5 people(so there is a "tie breaker if needed). Perhaps we could implore them to select a short list of 10 or 12 from the photos and then vote from that list?
Lastly, I strongly believe this should be for bragging rights only. The T-shirt I offered to make in my earlier post was meant to be no more than a symbol of those bragging rights.
I think our watch words should best be Simple, Inclusive, and Fun.
Rob
