View Full Version : I DID IT! Holga M-Mount on R-D1

I made a Holga M-mount lens after reading many inspiring DIY articles. Unfortunately, they're all for DSLRs, so I thought to myself why not make one for my R-D1? Well, with some plumbing parts and sheer luck I did it. Assembled together with black masking tape, no glue. Today's my third day of testing. If you want to make one yourself, I posted the instructions on my PBASE gallery (http://www.pbase.com/orbitalbox/howtoholga).

Great combo.

Maybe you could mount your Holga lens on a Leica M8, turning it into the most expensive crappy camera of the world :D (sorry, couldn't resist :().

Cheers,

I'm actually rather surprised to see these photos aren't as crappy as an average Holga. What's with that?! :)

Because digital > film?

(Just kidding! I'm as much a film fan as I am a digital fan)

ps for Holga fans - anyone know how to make these pictures crappier? ;)

The Holga look is mostly due to vignetting as the plastic lens doesnt quite cover 6x6 and is only sharp [relatively speaking] in the centre.
Of course on an RD-1 sensor you are getting the [relatively] best part the centre of the image....................
Unlikely to have lightleaks too, another part of the "holga look", oh and yes more than one shutter speed and aperture might help to make it "too good".

I'm also thinking the Holga body doesn't keep 120 film as flat as say, oh, a Hasselblad. :D

Great work!

How about making the lens sit less parallel? Or perhaps use the lens attached to disposable 35mm cameras?

Does the M8 need a Holga to be such? ....sorry, couldn't resist even more! :D :D

Howard: great how-to-do-it instructions, and good results! I particularly like the Ginko tree. Sadly, I haven't got a Holga - but I do have an R-D1 and a magnifying glass :D

I can't help thinking it should be possible to reproduce the "Holga look" as a Photoshop action -- which, should anyone actually do it, presumably would be one of the Seven Signs of the Digital Photography Apocalypse...

Ah, but there is. Photoshop plug-ins which emulate the Holga look are now available! Repent, the End is Near!!!! :D :D :D

I'd like to see, but all I see are red x's inside small boxes instead of your thumbnails. Whats up with my browser?

Because the R-D1 has probably a crop factor of 3 compared to the 6x6 negative of the holga? So essentially you only use the centre sweet spot of the lens.

Now a holga lens for a hassie with digital back would be really something to see!

Thanks. I envy all the resources available for SLR diy projects. So I thought why not make one for my camp. :)

I guess I am a bit of a "Holga Purist", but think it's cool that you did it.

Awesome. I actually emailed the Holgamods guy a few months ago re: a LTM Holga lens, but he never responded. Thanks for the instructions.

Now, if Holgamods ever mass produce my mod for sale, would that be some type of infringement?:confused:

Did one of you ever made some pictures with such an expensive little nothing like a ‚pinhole’ on R-D1?

Is that a Canon lens I see there on your post??? I was going to take my Canon 1.8 apart for this subject because of fungus (they cleaned it but you can still see the imprint). I didn't do it because I just don't have the heart. :D

Lovely! I think you should give it a clever name (how about a riff on Homer Simpson: "D'oh!-graphy" [digital + Holga])?

As others have noted, however, your only possible gaffe might have been in making the conversion too good; where's the heavy vignetting, the screamingly-obvious soft spots? By Holga-graphy standards, you might have screwed the pooch here. ;)

Years ago I mounted a Holga lens on my D1x, which I believe cost $5500 at the time. So I think that beats the M8 current list price.

But I'm pretty sure someone has mounted one to an even more expensive MF digital back by now, which actually makes more sense. As we've seen, it's just not crappy enough on a DX sized sensor. It's really not even crappy enough on a full 35mm frame. I actually have a whole collection of homemade lenses hacked together from magnifying glasses or random optics in an effort to out-holga the holga....

Well, I did put on a pinhole on my R-D1 recently. :)

On the subject of pinholes, does anyone know what the optimum hole size is?

Too small and you get too much diffraction, too large and there's too much blur - there must be an optimum
