Saw a weird Jupiter 8 with white distance scale marking on the black lens. It seems to be black paint and not black chrom and the serial number begins with 01xxxxx
Is it a new jupiter 8? Could it be a old black paint jupiter 8? Anyone encountered one before?

nothing unusual here, the J-8 that came on my 1971 Zorki 4 has the white numbers on the distance scale also.
I have seen many J-8s like this.

Common, but the serial number may indicate a prototype or non production model.

I have seen a few with "odd" serial numbers like this.

Just like mine... came with the Zorki 4. But what should a Jup 8 look like then? Is there a more common model?

Vic, the normal modern j8 has green distance scale. I might buy this one but I would like to know if anyone already played with different J8 generations. Are they consistently the same, or is newer the better?

J-8s vary in optical quality regardless of year of manufacture.
go thru a few and keep the real gems.

The export black J8s mainly had the green lettering. Most of the "home" models I have seen have been white. All of the black ones I have seen or had to deal with are of the last generation with the rotating front when you focus. I have also seen the very occasionally chrome one of this type. Of the earlier chrome ones, there are 2 distinct types. One is relatively common and does show a range of small detail differences. The other rarer sort shares the same type of focussing mech as the J3. More fiddly to service but they do seem to be better built and have much nicer handling. I haven't noticed anymore variation between types of lens than there is between different lenses of the same type. Much will depend whether it was a friday afternoon lens in the first place and what has happened to it since.
