View Full Version : Oh no!!

I'm down a Leica!

Brian will be sending me a cheque very soon for the IIIc, so it will be returning from whence it came! Early/Mid-October I received the camera, so Early/Mid-February it goes. Only an extended holiday with me I guess.

Anyway I'm sad to see it go, but I still have the Contax II and I still have the Leica Standard.

Now for the bad news! I want a Leica M!!

Am I mad?!

I'll have a little over 2 tons once the IIIc has disappears, and I saw a user M2 for sale from a dealer for £365. I know, same cashflow problem I had with the CRR thing, but one less Leica!

I can hopefully raise up to 3ton without too much crying, but I really ought to have a job I think!

So, Oh No!!
If only Clarence had waited an extra hour or two, I'd be the proud owner of a CL, but instead I'm the proud owner of a headache over what camera my cash is to be saved for!

I hear cyanide works.

Short of that, you need to find religion.

Keh has a BGN CL, you could call them and ask about it!

Ash
02-14-2007, 06:29
Call from the UK? No thanks! :)

I'm looking to buy within Europe. Once you add the cost of tax and shipping, there isn't much to be saved from buying outside the country.

Don't get a CL Ash ... they're 'dinky' compared to an M. I picked up a user M2 for $500.00 Australian a while ago ... it still needs a CLA yet but Youxin only charges $100.00 for that and then it will be my spare to go with the really nice one I picked up recently ... courtesy of Roland's constant perusing of eBay!

I think you would really 'click' with an M2 because you seem to like the 35mm focal length ... "May The Force Be With You." :p

I do love 35mm, but I'm enjoying 50mm for portraits on RF. It's in my comfort zone ;)

I've been offered a CL in DAG-cla'd condition with manual, strap, etc... for just about my current budget. After I purchase the LTM-M adapter I'll be tapped, but I'm not thinking about that right now :D

Am I going to be disappointed with the CL? Are the claims of poor focus with fast lenses going to be a problem with a Canon 50/1.8 ltm or a Summicron 50/2 coll LTM? Will I be able to collapse the Summi into the CL? It hardly collapses much.

Are there any problems I'll encounter using a LTM-M adapter?

02-14-2007, 08:31
Ash, you should just buy an M. That's obviously what you really want. Save up for a while if necessary, but I can't see the point buying something just because it's available, if it isn't exactly what you want.

Ian

dazedgonebye
02-14-2007, 08:38
I'd have to agree that you should save and get the M. That's not from any experience I have with any of these cameras, just from my extensive experience churning my gear.
You know what you want. Save your money a bit longer and get it.

Ash

02-14-2007, 08:44
The CL is a great little pocket camera. Lots of things going for it. Particularly one that's already had a CLA. And you should have no problem focusing a 50/2.0 or even 50/1.8 lens with it. However, as others point out, if you're really desirous of a Leica M, then I agree you should wait. Otherwise, you'll just be going through this drill again soon. Just my $.02 worth...

Leitz (in '74) indicated that you needed a dynotape section stuck on the barrel of collapsibles and indicated the thickness to cut the dyno tape to.

I forgotten the number for the cron.

I'll see if I can find it.

Frank, I think it's a GAS attack more than anything. Having read how short that baselength is, especially compared to a Contax, I can't really justify it, no matter how Chic it is!

I use the Canon 50 F1.5 with my CL, on a Leitz adapter. Works for me. I have no problem with the focus on either the 50/1.5 wide open for the Tele-Elmarit 90/2.8 wide-open.

It is a nice camera. The Canon lens will fit into the pouch case. The 50/1.8 is slightly bigger than the 50/1.5, but you will not have any trouble.

The hell with Patience. By them now, enjoy them as long as you can. I would have bought the M3 and M2 a long time ago if I knew they were so nice.

You have me worried I've only sold two cameras in the last five years, both were digital and cheap.

So you dont have GAS you have BASS (Buy And Sell Syndrome) you seem to be as bad as Joe (Back Alley). I have GAS, the guys at work caught me taking empty cardboard boxes from work and said 'You want these for storing cameras in don't you...'

Heh - you would be fine; the M2 and 3 are NICER than the 6 so don't worry about that. Sadly I'm not heading up to London until a few days too late for Chinese New Year, but I'll be around Bristol just to walk the streets with a camera on Friday and probably Monday as well.

And the Rollei, if it appears, will be a 2.8e!

ash, maybe kui has a good idea, the contax is great and i'm betting the nikon will be as well, if not even better.
and with a 50mm lens they were both cheaper than a leica body alone. and the contax was reconditioned and the nikon had a recent cla.

You know, since the subject of controlled substances was brought up, wouldn't the III be regarded in some quarters as a "gateway" drug to the harder, non-threaded stuff?

At any rate: Ash, hold off for the M, especially if stretching to an M2/M3 isn't going to to take the better part of forever (you mention the £/€ gap, but not the timeline involved in bridging that gap). After all, it's not as if you'll be hamstrung from taking any pictures at all in the meantime. Shoot with what you have, save for what you want.

- Barrett

Ash
02-15-2007, 01:28
Chris - but more fun ;)

Barrett - I would know the timeline if/when I know I'd next be employed and earning wages. I'm out shooting with the Contax and the Rolleicord today, photo's of Rich (second 'proper' shoot, third or fourth time he's been in front of my camera) so I think that combo does me quite well.

I still want an M before I spend all the cash on something else though! Thats my main problem - impatience and a tendency to stretch beyond my limits.

Anyway I'd better sort myself out. Have a good day everyone ;)
