I thought it was important enough that Everyone should know!

Thanks to Keith for pointing it out shortly after I scrolled up to see it myself.

Frank, was that the photo you were talking about? The perfect shot?

It is a very interesting photo, Frank. Would you explain to us the settings and so on?

I like Frank's new Avatar...
goes with the Buddhist message.

I have decided that in honour of Frank's new avatar ... I am going to change mine for a week or so to a pic I recieved recently of my eighty six year old dad in New Zealand. Like Frank's dad ... perhaps he will give my posts more credibility!

C'mon you guys ... let's see your dads as avatars for a week or so! :p

The best photo of my dad is his tucking into a nectarine on a street corner in Croatia. He'd hate me to put that as an avatar.

Anyway, great shot Frank and Keith :D

Sure Raid. I visited my parents last weekend. I was taking some pictures around the house and noticed the light from the upstairs hall window. The wall behind was blank and unlit so I knew it would make a good background. I asked my dad to stand near the window at an angle so the light would strike him obliquely. I angled myself so that his glasses would reflect the window causing them to white out. I was using my new Hexar RF with Summar lens, set the lens to f3.5 or so, and let the camera AE take care of the shutter speed (1/60) with 400 speed film.

Guys, take pictures of those you love, while you are able.

And on a lighter note, I wish I would have followed this advice and taken pictures of my various girlfriends over the years!

That is a cool avatar, Can you post the picture here somewhere? I have given up on trying to downsize well focused images to use as a avatar for the moment.

I took 5 pictures of my father last weekend, 2 with glasses refecting a window, and 3 without glasses.

Frank: Thank you for the explanation. All of the photos look simply great. I am still trying to find a Summar lens for the one that vanished.

Thanks Frank .... you have reminded me of how much I love and respect my dad ... and also that he is not going to be around forever. My mum died recently and he's so important to me now. When he's gone I'm not sure how I will feel!

Keith, really sorry to hear of your loss. That is a great portrait though! :)

I'm really pleased with that pic Ash ... it was taken with a ****ty little digital point and shoot by a friend who was in NZ recently and visited him. After a bit of ps work and a heavy crop and desaturation it has turned into a very nice pic of him! :)

The photo on the left makes a great avatar - the photo on the right is just a great, great portrait. I'm guessing your family will enjoy those portraits for generations to come. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Terrific photograph, Frank! Reminds me of Karsh's Hemingway portrait.
Both of the posted portraits are winners!

Regards!

Thank you all, great photos.

Perhaps sentiment & memory are the best part of photography,
at least for most of us.

Keith: I lost my father about 9 years ago, and it felt bad. Then I lost also my mother a few months ago, and it still is a horrible loss. I keep on thinking at times that I should call Mother, but then realize....

Enjoy what you have.

Frank, I really like the second picture of your Dad without the glasses the best.

Nikki has show and tell every Friday. For Veteran's Day, the kids were asked to bring in something from a family member that served. I let Nikki bring in a copy of a picture of my Dad with his B-29 from WW-II and one in his Sherman Tank in Korea. I found ONE shot where the Nose-Art had full-clothing.

Great pics both Frank & Keith. I lost my dad to cancer when I was 16 and wear a yellow band most days. Hardly a day goes by when I don't think of him. As Raid says, enjoy what you have.

Great photos Frank and Keith. I've only got one good real portrait of my dad, tho I do have many candids and family snaps.

Here is my dad (at the tender age of 55 or so) taken with a 4x5 a few years ago... not an RF.

Okay, you talked me into it!

Here's my Avatar. It's an image of my Great Grandfather, taken somewhere around 1924.

I always thought he looked very distinguished.

I have been really forgetting to take pictures of my family. They really run from me when I have the camera, but I'll try harder. Frank is very right about that.

LOL ... the Aussie hat will return next week. there's no way I'm letting dad hog the limelight for too long. :)

Everyone seems to have changed his avatar this week... Guess I'd better get busy. The portraits of parents by one and all are very moving.

I've often wished I could click on someone's avatar and see the portrait on a larger scale, but I guess that would mean reworking the software package that runs RFF... It's a treat to see the full-size pictures posted and linked in this thread.
