View Full Version : February is Tom A's Nikon Rf Month :-)
Hi!
As the film is piling up I thought we should start a new thread on February being Nikon Rf month.
Let's not be too selective either and invite Contax and Kiev users too. After all the camera body is just a box with some mechanical gizmo's inside and a finder. What really counts is the glass up front.
This project has given me an opportunity to cycle through my Nikon camera bodies and lenses.
Today's "users" were the battered SP with the old version 35/1,8 and the 2nd black 50/1,4.
Just loaded the "Saturday Specials": two chrome S2's with a 35/2,5 and a chrome 50/1,4.
So far I found the whole thing quite interesting and although there is an M2 sitting on my desk with the 40/1,4 SC on it, I have resisted it.
There is still the odd time when I twist the lens the wrong way, but after 7-8 rolls I am doing it less and less.
So get those Nikon's out there and fire them up. Dust off the Contax's and the Kiev's and load up.
The promise is for Vancouver is overcast and showers tomorrow so it will be an easy 5,6/250.
I don't own much that's exotic. I guess I'll have to shoot some pictures with my Orion 28mm f/6 and with the Zeiss Biogon 21/4.5.

Boooo! I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Feb. is too crappy of a month to put such a glorious name with it. Give Nikon May. We should shoot with Canon or Pentax this month.
I believe this heralds a Nikon RF renaissance here at RFF!
A leading of the lost tribes of Nikon out of the deserts!
:)

Nikons thrive in crummy conditions.

My S2 is ready with Nikkor-S.C 5cm/1.4. Although I have shot the whole December and January with that lens. My Leica M2 is sitting useless with film inside. I have already forgotten, what film I put in it few months ago...
For some of us, every month is Nikon RF month.

Thanks for link. I just wonder, are those nice Yama hoods available outside Japan? I can't read nor write Japanese, so Yahoo Japan looks a bit complicated...
Hi!
Today I managed to shoot 4 rolls with the Nikon RF's.
The good wonderfully sunny weather made me add my Black Dial S2 to the bag. The rangefinder patch is "invisible" so I use that one for scale-focused lenses only -today it was the 28/8 Tessar.
Tomorrow's "kit" is loaded and ready. The black S3 Millennium with the Millennium 50/1,4, a chrome S2 with my "ugly" 35/2,5(serious scratches on the front element) and the Black Dial S2 with a 15/4,5 Ultra Wide Heliar.
Now have 10 rolls on the darkroom bench - might even do a processing run this week to avoid processing fatique at the end of the month.
The old mechanical cameras still infuse you with the feeling that YOU took the picture. The modern ones are more like you are issuing a command and the camera performs a multi-task operation.
Today's set is on my flickr site (below). I updating & will publish Feb. Rf pics there.

Good Evening,
Today the weather here in Vancouver, BC was grim! 1/60 at 2,8 for most of the day so I left the 15/4,5 at home. Shot with the black S3 2000 and the 50/1,4 Millenium and the "ugly" 35/2,5.
Loaded tomorrow's cameras; the chrome S3 Millenium with a black 50/2
and the S2 with the VC 35/2,5.
The black S3 Millennium has the smoothest release of any of my cameras - Leica/Nikon, etc. My chrome S3 Millennium is positively "rough" compared to it
and it also has a bit of a squeel in the focus.
So far I have been cycling mainly through my 35's and 50's. After tomorrow I will start with the wider and also longer lenses.
The enclosed shot (I hope it will be there - yesterday the pic failed to attach) is taken with the Ricoh 28 Digital. Close focus to 1,5 cm!

Hi!
Today was a three roll day. I finished the rolls in the 28/3,5 VC camera and the roll in the 50/2 black Nikkor - as well as the one with the 35/2,5 VC lens.
Loaded up tomorrow's bodies and I am sticking to the S2 (two) and the chrome S3 Millennium.
This package has one of the S2's with a postwar 35/2,8 Biogon T* lens and the other S2 with one of my favourites - the 25/4 Skopar. In the screwmount version it is a stand-out-lens. Very sharp with nice smooth contrast and the S-mount has the advantage of having a coupled rangefinder due to the Nikon Rf's built in helicoil.
The chrome S3 sports the 50/2,5 VC lens. It is not a very popular lens, but I like it because it is compact and as good as any of the Nikkor 50/2's or even the Summicron 50/2. The hood is cute although it tends to become a repository for crumbs and as i am a pipesmoker - a lot of tobaccoflakes!
I did run 5 rolls last night. Neopan 400 in Beutler for 11 1/2 minutes. It is not a fine grain film in this combination, but very sharp.
The promise is for some sunny/overcast weather tomorrow so maybe I get a chance to finish off the roll in the S2 Bd with the 15/4,5.

Hi Kiu!
Hit rolls 15 today! Last night I did another run of 5 rolls in Beutler.
I did cut the develping time by a minute as the first batch looked a bit too contrasty.
Tuulikki has promised to load this morning's scans onto the FLICKR- site (in the footer) tonight.
The light was good enough today to finish the roll in the S2 with the 15/4,5 Ultra Wide Heliar.
Loaded that cameras for tomorrow, this time with the 12/5,6 Heliar.
I hate the process of developing film. Thus I do it in 5 roll batches. It takes just as long to do 5 rolls as 1 roll.
The process of having to do a set amount of film is good for you. You start looking for new areas to shoot in and it forces you to veer off the beaten track a bit.

I am on board, too: used one of my chrome S2 bodies with Nikkor-S.C 5cm/1.4 this past weekend, searching out sun through grey skies. A delight to advance the film, nice feel. Will load up my other S2 and attach the C/V 25 tonight. Then (trumpets blare) I plan to use my SP and S3. This is a big deal for me, as I have owned the SP since 1992 (purchased at NHS Convention in Seattle) and the S3 since 2003 and never put film through them. Yes, it is true, for I have put these on the collectibles shelf in my heart and mind. But leave it to Tom A. to inspire me to use these things. In fact, I am psyched to see results of the SP with the 35 f1.8 and 105 f4 lenses. Thanks to all for the inspiration. Is that dust I see on my MP and M3?
Every month is Nikon RF month for me, but I'm using this as an opportunity to try out some of the lenses that usually sit on the shelf. Last weekend I used the Zeiss Biogon 21/4.5on my S3-2000 for quite a few shots at my daughter's birthday party. (I like the fact that my cameras have interchangeable lenses, so, while shooting two rolls, I also used the 28/3.5, 35/1.5, 50/1.4 Millenneum and 85/2). I had a few frames left over at the end of thbe day, so I used the Orion-15 28/6 to get some shots of her doing homework.

Good Evening,
Today was a good day!
The weather co-operated; it was nice & mild & 1/250 & f8!
Finished the roll with the 15 Ultra-wide Heliar and also the 28/3,5 VC as well as the one in the S3 Millennium.
Most of the squeeky sound in the focus is gone - it probably needed the exercise!
Loaded up for tomorrow: The chrome S3 Millennium now sports a pre-war Sonnar 50/1,5,
One S2 has a pre-war 35/2,8 Biogon on it. That is a substantial lens! They certainly did not lighten it by using anything flimsy.
The Bd S2 has the 12/5,6 Ultra Wide Heliar attached. I just finished another processing run and the tally is 15 rolls run, 4 cameras loaded (I did not finish the roll in the S2 with the 25/4 on it yet).
Let's see what tomorrow brings picture wise.
I am on board, too: used one of my chrome S2 bodies with Nikkor-S.C 5cm/1.4 this past weekend, searching out sun through grey skies. A delight to advance the film, nice feel. Hello Bob,
So glad you are on board, too. You know I never was a collector, just a user. Mint cameras do make me nervous and that first scratch gets you. I prefer mine "seasoned" :-)and with scars from using them. As I was a photographer for many years keeping the equipment working was importatnt, looks were less so. This is probably why I have resisted the SP 2005. I tend to have 2-3 bodies in my bag and no padding as that makes it bulky.
When I picked up the black S3 Millenium in Tokyo, I unpacked it and gave the case and boxes to the dealer and asked for a strap instead. Then I did proceed to load it and shoot a quick roll while he watched it depreciate...
Looking forward to seeing your & everybody else's shots!
Some of my stuff so far should be in the FLICKR-site below -just learning to do this.
Nothing special here, but am attaching a 21/4.5 Biogon shot from my daughter's 9th birthday (she's an athlete but decided she wanted something frilly, so they played a "poise and charm" game where they took turns seeing how far they could walk with a book balanced on their heads).
Also a shot from the 28/6 Orion-15 ... it was night, so I had to use flash. I bought most of my gear where I was a working photographer, and is the only lens I ever bought just because it seemed cool. I used to carry it on vacations because it effectively has no weight. But once I traded a chrome-barrel W-Nikkor 2.8cm f/3.5 for a black barrel version, this has pretty much sat on the shelf unused (the black Nikkor 2.8cm also is extremely light weight and, unlike the Orion, is RF coupled).
Tom, great to hear from you.
I'm shooting Nikon RF lenses on my newly acquired RD1 and a Hong Kong adapter. The RD1 viewfinder is not my favourite, but it is better than the Nikon RF focus spot. Six of one and half-a-dozen of the other is my opinion of the RD1 viewfinder vs the Nikon RF.
Otherwise having great fun with the camera, and my son likes the instant feedback (i.e. chimping).

I haven't been able to take snow pictures this time around. I've had meetings at work that wouldn't cancel for the snowstorm.
Now I've got to figure out which Nikon RF to use for this weekend's February snowstorm luau that my wife has planned.

Vince, I have the Orion 28/6 in Leica screw-mount. Unfortunatly it suffers from typical Russian sticky barrel so I haven't used it much. The Kiev/S mount is one that I haven't tried. The USSSR 35/2,8 in Kiev mount works quite well on my Nikon RF's and considering that it was given to me, the price was right!. It will be put through its paces in the next couple of days in my February Nikon Rf month project.
No sticky barrel with the Kiev-mount Orion. It has no RF coupling and so is one of the few Nikon/Contax/Kiev lenses with a short focus throw. Minimum focus is still 1 meter. It's main advantages that is it essentially has no weight, and it's extremely small, like a pancake lens.
Hi!
Today was one of those days that makes Vancouverites long for sunny latitudes!
It poured down rain the whole day! Even a quick walk in downtown soaked both the S2 and the S3 (and me).
I did finish the roll with the 50/1,5 - mostly at 1,5 and 1/60 or 125! It was that grim.
The S2 with the 35/2,8 prewar Biogon got halfway finished - "Through the windshield gloomily".
Being an eternal optimist I still loaded another body and lets see if the heavens run out of water tomorrow...
S2 with 1/2 roll left and the Biogon 35/2,8, S3 with a 50/2 Zeiss-Opton and another S2 with the chrome Nikkor 50/2. I keep thinking that I will soon run out of 50's to shoot with, but I still have at least three left after this.
Still baffled by the flare on my post-war 35/2,8 T* Biogon. Not consistent, but I start suspecting a corner seal. Upper left hand so it could be covered when I hold the camera and only leak when I leave it on my shoulder.
Here's a better photo from the Orion 28/6 last summer, taken with my SP. I bought this lens at a swap meet in Germany in 1991, when interesting stuff was flooding out of the Soviet Union (the Soviet Union still existed then, at least for a few more months). I can't remember, but I probably paid about 120 marks for it, a little less than $100. It was the only one I've ever seen. Serial number is 7100017, and nearly all the pictures I've seen of Orion lenses show very low serial numbers, so they must have had short runs every year.
Good Morning,
I tried to post today's set-up last night but for some reason I could not access Rf forum.
Here they are, the black S2 with a Biogon 21/4,5 and its rather crummy finder. There is a cracked center element and lots of dirt, but it works. The S3 Mill/Chrome sports the 50/2 in chrome.
I am doing a test on the three 50/2's that I have just to see if my "fuzzy" one is a one-off.
Weather seems to be co-operating so I will take my 12/5,6 along on another crome S2 and see if I can finish that film today too,
I did run another 5 rolls last night and will post these on the Flickr site tonight. The S4 locked up yesterday so it has to be serviced. The advance would not do it properly and rather than trying to fiddle with it, I will take it to Horst for service this weekend and see if he can do a quick job on it. I need it for the 105/2,5 next week.

I propose that March is "One camera, one lens month." Pick a body, pick a lens, never the two shall separate for the month of March. Thoughts?
I can't do it. I change lenses too often.
Good Evening,
Today the weather co-operated for a while and we went down to Vancouver's "Yaletown" area and the massive condo-conglomeration that sprouted on the old Expo-86 site.
Most of these buildings were developed by a Hong Kong developer and locals here in Vancouver has christened it "Hongouver".
The 12/5,6 can fit even substantial towers onto the negative and when it was too wide I went with the Biogon 21/4,5. The 50/2 became the super-tele of the day.
Optimism made me load up the kit for tomorrow; the black SP with a 85/2, a chrome S2 with a 21/4 VC and a matching "fake" 21 Nikkor finder, the black S2 with the late version 35/3,5 and the camera that started it all. A Nikon S with the 3rd of my 50/2's on it. This camera was given to me by Shintaro in the late 90's and neither he nor I thought that I would get hooked on the " backwards" turning Nikons!
I did load another 20+ shots on to the flickr site
www.flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/)
from yesterday's shoot. Reading about Vince's experiences with the Jupiter 35/2,8 I shot a roll with that too. Not a bad lens at all!

Good Evening,
Today I finished the rolls with the 85/2, the late 35/3,5, 21/4VC, the 50/2 on the S and the R2S with the Nokton 50/1,5. Busy day obviously! The black SP's rangefinder patch is not ideal for the 85/2 so I will do another roll with that on the R2S.
For tomorrow the eternal optimist in me loaded the R2S with the Apo-Lanthar 85/3,5, a S2 with the 50/3,5 Heliar and the S3 /Rapidwinder with the 35/1,2 Nokton.
If it will be dark and grey, it'll be the 35/1,2 who gets most of the work. If the rain stays away, I will put the 50/3,5 and the A-L 85/3,5 through its paces.
This will be a day with two proto-types going.
The 50/3,5 is the original prototype for the 50/3,5 Heliar for thr NHS R2S. Mr Kobayashi gave it to me after I solved the problem of how he could make another batch of Heliars, without depreciating the collapsible version that comes on the Bessa-T.
It is an astounding lens, most likely the sharpest 50 that I have. It will even give the 50/1,4 Asph a good fight. A bit slow, but compact and the quality of the image is different from anything else. There is a "roundness" to it that other lenses lack.
The 35/1,2 was an experiment. We were talking about what lenses the Nikon system lacked and the only one we could come up with was an ultra-fast 35. He made initially one only and gave it to me as a present. Later on he made a couple f more, but the world supply can be counted on the fingers of one hand!
Souped yesterday's rolls today - boy that 12 is wide! I keep forgetting just how much it takes in. If time allows me tomorrow I will put some more stuff on our Flickr-site (in the footer).

You did turn the tide as i had all of this stuff already! Beware though - it started innocently with that black S and the early 35/3,5. This February project was started just to cycle through cameras and lenses. It now looks like it will take a total of 30 rolls just to cover the lenses - one lens/one roll! It is not like I go searching for this stuff. Somehow it just does show up!
Oh, my teaser for February - the last roll will be shot with a Nikon with a Leica lens!

Joe, i think the 35/2,5 VC is now out of stock at the factory. This could mean shortage here once CQ's stock is sold. We all know what happens then. Prices go up etc! The 35/2,5 Nikkor seems to be plentiful and if you can live with the lower contrast it is not a bad lens. The VC is sharper, but unless you do large 16x20 inch prints, I dont think you will see much difference. It does look right on the S2 but one should remember that all of these lenses are close to 50 years old and modern glass and computers have improved lens-design considerably.

That has never stopped Tom before...How about it Tom? Can a different bayonet/mount be created to attach such a lens to a Nikon RF camera? granted it will have to replace the factory focusing mount. Sounds like a neat idea...a pemenant Nikon low light Rf set-up....JUST DAY-DREAMING:D

I wonder how low stock is?
You could remove the optics module from the Canon 50mm F1.2 LTM lens. The module seperates from the helical, aperture ring stays on the lens module. Then you could construct an internal mount for the Nikon RF. The lens is the correct focal length for the Nikon RF.
Much smaller and cheaper than the 5cm F1.1 Nikkor. Not much heavier than the Millenium Nikkor on the S2-2000.
Brian, I did have the 50/1,2 'scope lens some years ago. I did look into fitting in a Pentax mount and using it with a Bessaflex. It is possible, but I did adapt the lens briefly to a M ( gaffer tape + a carved out defunct M-body cap). Fixed focus at about 1 meter. it is not that good a lens for that kind of stuff. Most of the Oscilloscope lenses are designed for close focus and as the screen is quite rough, resolution does not need to be that fine. Of course, if you removed the entire helicoil from a S2 and made a specific helicoil it could become a dedicated high speed S2!

These are LIMITED production lenses. Initially only ONE run of each is scheduled: 900 21/4's, 800 25/4's, and 700 35/2.5's. Sadly, IF they sell slowly, there will be only ONE production run

Good Evening,
Today was Chinese New Year; - a great oppurtunity for shots of the parade and spectators.Souped 5 of the rolls and a brief glance on the wet film showed some stuff with promise,
Tomorrow's kit is the last batch of lenses to cycle through.
The black S2 has an early 35/3,5 on it. The black S3 Mill, has the venerable 105/2,5 and the chrome S2 has the 135/3,5 and a Leica 135 finder.
I will try to post today's scan on flickr,
http://flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/sets/ (http://flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/sets/)
but it seems slow tonight. Some interesting stuff with both the 21 Biogon and the 12/5,6 VC.
My attempt to find out if the 50/2 Nikkors are a bit fuzzy continues. I dont know if it is me or the lenses! This could require some Adox KB-14/tripod and sun to settle!
The 50/2 #723 so far seems fine, but the other two are stiii suspect. Could be me too of course!

I was out at the weekend and shot some frames with my S-Heliar 50mm/3.5 and Nikkor-S 5cm/1.4 lenses. I also visited a local camera flea market - or should I say a camera museum - and saw there a huge wooden camera with 36cm/4.5 Heliar lens. So a vintage large format Heliar lens met her little cousin http://www.flickr.com/photos/jsuominen/395109399/ . :)
I read somewhere, perhaps on the Nikon Historical Society site, that there were some unpublicized changes to the formula of the 50/1.4 over time. So they may have been tweaking the formulae on other lenses and not telling anyone.
Good Evening,
Today I thought that I had finished my run through my S-mount lenses and in a fit organizational fervor I cleaned the Nikon drawer of my camera cabinet. What did I find -another 50/2!!!!
So tomorrow I will run all four of my 50/2's with a roll of film each (Neopan 400) and if weather and time permits also a roll through the Elmon.
What prey is an Elmon? At a camera swap meet last year I did pick up one of the Nikon 35S Microscope cameras (mainly for the lens on it - a 105.5,6 enlarging lens that I knew a friend of mine was looking for). US$ 80 got me the camera and lens and I got $40 back for the lens, A $40 35S is cheap but the camera is no less useles for that.
At the same swap I picked up a Nagel Pupille, a 127 format folding camera with the 50.3,5 Elmar on it, The camera was in trully "crappy" condition. The bellows could be used as tea-strainer and most of the leather had rotted away. However, the lens was in reasonable condition and the Compur shutter worked. Now, there was never a Nikon RF with a Leica lens, at least to my knowledge. Now this could rectify this lack of a niche product.
I machined an old extension tube to take the Elmar lens (at the moment it is a push fit, but I just need to make 3 set-screws tofix that), The tube had to be turned down about 7 millimeter to accurately focus the lens, I must admit that I used Leica loaner M8 last year to check the focus - a Compur M8!
It must be the wet weather that brings these kind of warped design ideas into ones head. It sounds to me that Brian suffers from the same ailment!
Still have 1/2 roll each in my 135/3,5 and 105/2,5 cameras as today it was raining heavilyand I did not feel like getting wet.
Loaded yeasterday's stuff up to the Flickr-site
http://flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/sets/ (http://flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/sets/)
- 35/1,2 and 85/3,5 mostly. The 85/3,5 is truly a sweet little lens. The 35/1,2 is of course in a class of its own. The roll with the 50/3,5 Heliar needs to be souped tomorrow, together with the early 35/3,5 roll.

A $40 35S is cheap but the camera is no less useles for that.
Sad, but true (no shutter, right?).. however, the notion of a small, black Nikon with half and full frame capabilities is immensely appealing to me!

Cale, unfortunately my 35S is the garden variety version with only full frame capability.

I think yours is rare...I always thought the garden variety is the other way.

Kiu. mine is really rare now as I drilled holes in the top to put the Nagel folding finder there! Now I have to turn the etched part of the glass 90 degrees as it is biased towards verticals.
I need to get a new tap for my set-screws for the Elmar too. The small 1,6mm taps do break witout much provocation. Oh well, there is still 8 days left of the month!

Just saw the 'Elmon' over on your Flickr site, Tom.. very cool looking! I'm assuming you'll post some pics from it soon?
A few more shots for Nikon RF month. These are with my S2 and a CV minifinder, which turns it into a great wide-angle camera.
We had our big snowstorm last week. The building with columns is Arlington Hall, in Arlington, Virginia, where U.S. codebreakers worked during and after World War II. It's now a school for the State Department's Foreign Service Institute. I also took a shot from the inside looking out from an upper-story window. Both shots were with the Nikkor 2.8cm (28mm) f/3.5.
Also a picture of my nine-year-old sledding over the weekend. This was with my 1987-version Jupiter-12 35/2.8, which I'm learning to appreciate more and more all the time.
And here's the set-up I've been using this month. An S2 (I painted the frontplate black, it was originally chrome) with a Soviet Jupiter-12 35/2.8 and a CV minifinder. Makes a nice little outfit to keep in my briefcase or overcoat pocket.

Vince, I like your S2. The 35/2,8 Jupiter is not a bad lens at all. I have it in both screw-mount and in the Kiev mount. Surprisingly flare free - I think the deeply recessed front element helps. The rear element is another story. You dont slam the lens on the camera! I think the idea of having two cameras and not changing in the heat of the shoot is a good idea! Most disasters happen when you change lenses anyway.
You had a substantial snow dump! There was a reason why I left Sweden more than 35 years ago. I cant stand snow. I know it is pretty and all that, but it is not for me. Vancouver usually gets a couple of days to a week every year and i tend to hibernate (or do darkroom work -much the same thing).
I used to do commercial work for large engineering companies and they were very good at sending me to places with inclement weather. Northern Canada in January - it hit -54C and most of my shooting was exteriors of a large plant. The backs of my Blad's shrunk enough that I could only wind film once it has sat in the front seat of the truck for 15 minutes and heated up slightly! When I complained they promised to do better and later that year sent me to eastern Turkey for 3 weeks. The temperature rarely dipped below 40+C and 90% humidity! Oh well on the average is wasn't bad!
Snow is mostly melted now. It was more ice than snow, which made for some of my lifetime's best-ever sledding. But getting back up the hill was treacherous.
I have two Jupiter-12s. My chrome 1960 version flares something awful (see below). Last year I got a 1987 version from Brian Sweeney ... for whatever reason, its flare is much better controlled (see bottom photo).

Okay, here's the first roll from my Nikon black dial S2 and 50/1.4, also black. I think I may have overcooked the tri-x a bit.

I really like the first one Ray.
Great sledding shot, Ray!
Great expression, Mike!
Here are a couple of portraits with S2, one with the Jupiter 35/2.8 and one with the Nikkor 35/1.8 -- that extra 1 1/3 stop makes a big difference after dark.

REGARDS,

Heck, it is still February and I just finished my last 5 rolls of Neopan 400. The last couple of days I have been shooting with the S3 bl. mill. and the 2005SP 35/1,8 and the black SP with the 50/1,4 Millenium.
Today I decided to finish with my chrome 50/1,4 and the chrome SP and later I switched to the 12/5,6 and went to the Vanocuver Library. It does look a bit like a small Coliseum. Nice curved structure and a closed interior courtyard. This is where the ESL students from Japan,Korea and China hang out. Lots of fast food places and cheap phone card stores.
Souping the film tonight and if there is anything of value, I will post it on our flickr-site
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rapidwinder/sets/
I am still going to keep the black S3 loaded and the SP 2005 35/1,8 on it. February is a short month and I am not going to stop using the Nikon Rf's.
This month also connected me to a group of really nice people. What I like is the fact you all are using your cameras, be it Nikon, Kiev, Canon, Leica or what ever. That is what they are for and I love looking at other peoples pictures. Thanks
P.S. Kiu you were right, it took close to 50 rolls to finish this project!
Definitely enjoyed hearing from you. Hope you keep stopping by.
Another thanks to all the Nikon et al. folks here.
My S2 arrived (thanks Steve!) and the 50mm Millenium will be glued to it. Sold my 90mm Elmarit to fund a 35mm skopar for the S3. I wonder if Brian could convert my 35mm Nokton to S-mount, otherwise it may go on the chopping block at some point. Looking forward to March, since it's NIKON MONTH!
Dawn is just starting here. A few high cirrus clouds wisp across the sky, but otherwise it will be a sunny day. The snow has mostly melted. I can hear birds in the bare trees.
Another Nikon month begins.

Oh I forgot to ask the most important question...will you drag Stephen to the CON??
Kiu
I promise that I haven't been lurking - it was just that the trip to japan occupied a fair chunk of March and coming back is always fraught with back-orders for things. Then there is the Tax-man who wants his pound ( or lbs) of flesh, with the paperwork attached!
All is not lost though. Today was the local "spring" swap meet and lots of things going on.
Some weird stuff picked up today: 400 ft of DuPont Superia Panchromatic Non-halation movie stock. Most likely old enough to collect Old Age Pension! Oh,well $5 was not too bad. Also a Helios 85/1,5 in what might be a Leica screw mount or a more obscure Russian SLR mount. Massive lens and it will take a while to figure it out!
Of course, for a person who considers 75mm lenses a "super-tele" the offer of a 400/5,6 and a 560/5,6 Leica Telyt set, with the Focovit grip and focussing tube AND to clinch the deal a Telyt to Nikon SLR adapter, was too good to pass on. The damned thing is HUGE. If you take it outside you will probably have security people chasing you - or aiming equally large missile launchers at you!
All right, there was a Nikon Rf too! Cheap Nikon S as whoever owned it before had partly disassembled it and placed in nice plastic box. Obviously daunted by the project of putting it back together, it passed on to me for about $120. It does include a scruffy looking 50/1,4 ( in pieces, but everything is there) and a denuded S body with the shutter curtains removed ( they are in the box with the essential metal bars). The finder is fine, but so far the advance refuses to budge.
I cant decide if I am going to re-assemble the lens as a fixed 1.4 or go to the trouble of installing all the aperture blades ( I already have 4 or 5 50/1,4's). The camera will be a winter evening project for Nov/Dec.
The R4M Bessa has seen most of the film going through it lately, But I just loaded another 16 Nikon cassettes and have the 50/1,4 mill. on a S3 and the 85/2 on a SP. The cassettes are interesting, so far I have identified three versions of the RF cassette and about 18 variations of center-spools! Not as easy to load as the Leica IXMOO cassette and they did cheapen the manufacturing towards the end. Some of the early ones are jewel like, polished brass and fit and finish with the best of them. The later ones have crimped metal "stops" and the loading spring is push fitted and prone to jamming. More on these in a NHS Journal story in the future.
It will not be easy to top Vienna as a location for NHS Convention, but us locals will try. One thing that Vancouver has is food and restaurants and if the weather is good, it is one of the most spectacular locations you can find. You guys have just about a year to get your plans made and if everything goes to plan, the cherry trees will be at peak or close to it.
