both are great shooters. Currently restauring a comparable fed2 with roman and cyrillic lettering
although they seem quite comparable, I think the Z6 has little but valuable extras:
- more clear viewfinder
- winding lever
- x-flash synch

I think the big thing was that the Z-6 looked very top heavy and it made the camera look much bigger than it actually is in real life. I don't have huge monster hands or anything, but once I saw it in the palm of my hand it really did look surprisingly small. Still, my FED-2 should be here next week so I'll get a good chance to compare the two :)

I had always thought that the FED-2 was my favourite screwmount FSU, based on functionality and just looking way cool, but some recent posts praising the Zorki 6 talked me into buying one. They were right- this is a really nice camera!
Both cameras had the cloth covering that I stripped off and replaced with leather, an easy job and very worth the effort. So now, I just can't choose.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/johndesmond/Russian%20Cameras/LeatherZorki6.jpg
I specify "screwmount", because my all-time favourite FSU camera is still the very early Kiev 2, which is in some ways superior, and no ways inferior to the Contax of which it is a copy.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/johndesmond/Russian%20Cameras/Kiev1949.jpg
I keep seeing posts that say that some camera or other is better than the FED 2 because it has X-sync, presuming the FED 2 doesn't. Every FED 2 I have ever worked with synced with electronic flash just fine at 1/30. Are there some that don't?
Cheers,
Dez

Indeed your flash will fire, but not at the right moment; non of the FED 2 I had for servicing were synchronized for x, only for bulb flash. x-flash was an extra feature on some zorki's like the Z5 and Z6. There is no synchonization mechanism built into the FED 2.
There is something strange here, I assure you that the FED 2 in the picture is correctly synchronized for electronic flash, and reliably exposes the entire frame. To the best of my knowledge, I have never worked on the sync mechanism of this camera.
It makes sense that a camera with non-adjustable sync from this period would be correct for flashbulbs rather than electronic flash, but there it is.
I recall repairing a faulty sync on a FED 2 that I sold a couple years ago. It is an unusual mechanism and rather fragile, but I don't recall having to do anything heroic to X-sync correctly on that one as well. I did not make any notes on the repair process.
I guess I will need to get another FED 2 and experiment with it. If there is some simple way to reset the sync, I'll take some pictures and post the process.
Cheers,
Dez

...
I frequently used my FED 2 (bought in 1991) with electronic flash in the early 1990s. It seemed to work even at 1/50 s (at that day and my age of 12 I assumed that a focal plane shutter would be fully open at 1/50 like my dads SLR) with the electronic flash - at least I didn't noticed the opposite while looking at the pictures (C41 process). Perhaps just the shutter was working incorrectly...

Indeed your flash will fire, but not at the right moment; non of the FED 2 I had for servicing were synchronized for x, only for bulb flash. x-flash was an extra feature on some zorki's like the Z5 and Z6. There is no synchonization mechanism built into the FED 2.
Ron,
That's interesting because the two FED 2s I have used (1 sold and 1 still owned) are most definitely synched at 1/30th for electronic flash. One strange thing about FED's synch mechanism is that it works correctly only at 1/30 and at no other speed (even on models with slow speeds), not even on "B". In contrast, the Zorki 3S, 4 and 4K had a proper synchroniser that works correctly at all speeds of 1/30 and slower, including "B" and those without slow speeds also do work properly on "B".

Might be that there is a difference between earlier and later models. I guess for the early ones it seems plausible they had one socket for bulbs since electronic flash was not generally in use in the fifties, not even in the sixties (many pro's used bulbs so that they were able to use flash at higher speeds). Electronic flash was really a modern feature in camera's of the fifties, and normally as an extra besides the ability to use bulbs. Anyhow when I 'service' a camera I always try to get the x-flash right since I like it very much to play with flash and available light. With the several Fed 2' s I had in my hands, only part of the frame illuminated - and - if my recollection is right - I could only adjust the flashtiming in the Zorki's (and Leica's). Perhaps with later models the socket is indeed meant for x-flash at the 1/30 speed.
Can't shoot a pic with all of my stuff at once, or my wife will have a chance to see how much stuff I have accumulated. :D
Let's start with this, the one I'm using right now:
http://i.imgur.com/rOyuE.jpg
It's got an Industar 61 L/D but it's not the lens that came with the camera (took it from a FED-5 from my collection). The collapsible one is simply not as good as this one.
Actually, the one in the picture is a third lens: an Industar 61 with markings in feet that I took from my FED-4. :D
The Metz 20 is VERY useful as I'm using mainly ISO 100 film, and that is for indoor and outdoor.
not much thought gone into this photo, in fact so little that i just grabbed the auction photo:D 6x6 frame included. I really like the tactile process of using this camera.

Here's one that I have restored recently - its curtains were all shot and its viewfinder was blurry:
http://kpmg0072.home.xs4all.nl/FED%201/IMG_4855.JPG
the old curtains fell apart:
http://kpmg0072.home.xs4all.nl/FED%201/IMG_4853.JPG
just after installing new curtains:
http://kpmg0072.home.xs4all.nl/FED%201/IMG_4858.JPG
and this is what it looks after I put everything back in place:
http://kpmg0072.home.xs4all.nl/FED%201/IMG_4894.JPG
However two screws at the back happened to be far from original and not well fitting so if anyone has this type of screws please leave a note....(it are the screws that attaches the body shell to the top, the same as the 3 screws at the front of the camera at the chromium part)
Love that demolition shot!
And that's really good FED and those chrome plates looks really sharp (new overlay or just good cleaning?).

I can recommend Aki Asahi's double-layer cloth. Excellent quality and stable in both directions. I've re-shuttered a FED 1 and Zorki 3M with it. It comes with a thin shutter tape which is deceptively strong.

Zorki4 1966 / Jupiter 3 / Tewe Polyfocus
Apologies for the pics, the only digital camera I currently own is my phone.
The collection:
http://www.hitmanh.com/cameras/fsu-cameras.jpg
http://www.hitmanh.com/cameras/fsu-kiev-ltm.jpg
Contax II (1936 serial number) is my main shooter, followed by the Keiv 4 (a/am?). 1984 serial on the body and Jupiter 8. I tend to shoot the Contax simply becuase the Kiev4 build quality sucks, but shutter timings seem to be bang on. The older Kiev is a 1964 serial number with a '57 Jupiter 8, but shutter times are well off and it's badly in need of a CLA. I shoot with the Jupiter 8s, mainly plus the 85mm and I have the 35mm 2.8 in a package somehwere between the UK and Russia. Also have a CZJ collapsible 50/2 sonnar which came with the Contax.
My main LTM is the Zorki 4, lovely little camera. Came with the black Jupiter 8 and I've since picked up the Jupiter 3, plus Jupiter 11. Keeping an eye for the 85 in LTM but prices are a bit silly right now. Also have the Jupiter 12. The FED 3 is a nice camera to. Came with the Industar 26. I also have a rather ugly green painted FED somewhere witht he Industar-22 lens on it.
Zorki 6 is on order to.
http://www.hitmanh.com/cameras/fsu-kiev60.jpg
Love the Kiev 60, real tank of a camera with great lenses. Currently have the Arsat 30mm 3.5, 60/3.5, 80/2.8, and the awesome CZJ MC 180/2.8 sonnar. Also an early 300/4 CZJ, however the aperture blades don't work, so need to get it CLAd at somepoint.
And finally

Moskva 5. Not really used it yet.

Hi guys.
These are my two komrads. The Z4 is my favorite camera so far. It's more fun than my OM-1, or my Argus C-3s. It has the best feel of any camera in my hands. The FED 5 is new to me. The meter works, and I'm running my first roll through it to check the rest out. I've been bitten pretty hard by the FSU RF bug. I've got a green FED 2b on its way right now!

Odd, that little stud in centre of the back is odd. Or is it a screw filling in a hole that someone has drilled to aid collimation? Earlier Feds had a collimation plug very similar to the contemporary Leica but I think yours is a little too late for that.
Very nice though, congratulations!

Nope, it's a handmade brass screw, that held a film plate inside the camera. The original plate was lost a years ago, I think. So someone replaced it with a plate from Smena 8M. I have one postwar FED with a suitable plate, so I replaced it.

Will need to find someone in holland who can do something about it, she's to nice to only live on a shelf..
This is actually likely to be a very easy fix, so you might consider doing it yourself if you have some tweezers and small screwdrivers and are a bit handy. I am assuming that the shutter curtain hanging is not a definite hard stop, but that it slows down and stops- if you pull on the curtain a bit, you should be able to close it further. I have some suggestions about cleaning the shutter mechanism in a different thread.
http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=128890
The Zorki 3C/4 shutter mechanism is not quite as simple as that of the FED 2, but nearly. The slow speeds are controlled by a separate mechanism off to the side, and it is not necessary to do anything with it if it is working properly. There are many repair services available that can do this job for you, but unless you are very lucky, the cost of the repair will exceed the value of the camera.
One more thing: black leather dye, available from shoe repair stores or leather hobby stores, will restore the black vulcanite to a new appearance, and once dry, does not rub off.
Cheers,
Dez

My newly aquired Zorki C (S) with relatively clean Industar 22. The lens hood is a British FIKUS look-a-like, finished with black crinkle paint. #4040 from Aki Asahi. Wrist strap from Gordy. This camera is surprisingly nice to use. The rangefinder is very contrasty and easy to focus. Love it!

XFer, very nice Zorki C! You have great taste in FSU RF's! I'm amazed at how bright the RF is on this camera, do you not agree? I feel as though it will never fail. Brilliant.
It's a great camera! I just love it. Sturdy, reliable (57 years of service, and counting), compact (smaller than my M6) and I really like its look. :-)
I replaced its collapsible lens with this Industar 61L/D 53/2.8 to get sharper shots, this lens is very good. :-)

That's not true because what you paid for it isn't what it's worth. And buying another might just start the same old sequence again.
Best thing, if you like the camera is to get it repaired and then use it. Often the difference between one on it's last legs because of neglect or old age etc and one that's been checked and repaired etc is nothing short of miraculous.
Regards, David
With FSU cameras, it has always seemed to me that the older they are, the better they were made. I am a Contax fan, so I have a few Kievs. Here is my oldest one, from 1949, with a scarce collapsible Zorki (later Jupiter-8) lens. These were only made for a very short time, and I also have a fixed mount ZK lens with a serial number about 350 higher. I think the production of the two versions of the lens overlapped in 1949. I recently got the collapsible lens, and all looks great, but I have not tried it with film yet.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/johndesmond/Kiev1949_zps33bbf6d6.jpg
The camera works just fine, and did not require any cosmetic restoration other than cleaning. The chrome on the early Kievs is a matte finish, and seems to be much better than that of the prewar Contaxes. It came with a very well made leather case, at least as good as the Contax ones.
I would love to get one of the early Kiev prototypes from 1947 or 1948, but they are very scarce, and have too many digits in their price tags!
Cheers,
Dez

Beautiful camera, Dez. There's something quite charming about using old Soviet war treasures.

Nice cameras, both the Zorki and the Kiev-2 ... I love the viewfinder and the focusing on the Zorki, very clear and easy to use.
I have a soft spot in my heart for the Kiev cameras as well, I have a Kiev-2 from the 1950's, and a Kiev-4a from the 1960's. They're both 100% functional and built like tanks. Russian tanks, I suppose. :)
One of the oddest cameras in my collection, the Fotokor-1. Still can't figure out how to use it properly. But it came with a cool hard-shell case with a profile of Lenin on it.

Interesting camera!
Looks like it is supposed to take a 6 x 9 cm film pack, which is just about unfindable. If the groundglass back comes off easily, you may be able to fit it with a 120 rollfilm back.
Cheers,
Dez

I think your right, either way I wasn't planning on just buying another one, but I'm not going to fix it myself since a very nice member of this forum offered to to do it for a small sum. Its on its way to him right now...
I hope to use it alot, once it's back :)

To chime in: The Fotokor is a press camera = photo + correspondent. Uses 9X12 cm plates, and focused by scale or groundglass. No rangefinder though.

Hi Michael
They seem to be popularly known as Fed "Siberia"s. The popular view also seems to be that there are no originals as such and are all copies of something that never existed. Whatever, the enlarged knobs seem pretty useful to me. I have a Leica III back in Blighty that had some similar but not so extensive enlargements. I got the camera from a camera shop here in the US via eBay. It was without the usual collapsible lens with enlarged aperture lever. Not really sure why they would have been separated. I agree with you with regard to the viewfinder size but you could always put an external finder on it.
Cheers,
Mark

Outstanding lens, I have exactly the same version (yellowish metal), but so far I'm using it guessing the composition through the normal rangefinder. Can you explain me better what viewfinder you coupled on your camera?

Hi NorpA,
The VF is a Helios (Japan) . Given to me by a friend. It has 35-85-135mm framelines. Ah use varifocal spectacles and found the 35mm framelines to be difficult to see/use, at first.
Since the normal, 50mm VF on my Fed has a perfect dioptre adjust for my eyes; ah normally use the Helios VF simply for quickly, visually checking boundaries eg. trees, walls+vertical/horizontal lines. It has been a good aid whilst learning how to use a rangefinder without framelines.
Like you, ah often just judge visually.Experience is the best VF.

My Leningrad, Kiev 2 and Zorki C.
I just received the Leningrad today, I owned one 40 years ago and I was pleased to see that the viewfinder is as good as I remembered it.
The Helios lens on the Kiev is phenomenal and the Zorki would be truly pocketable if it wasn't so heavy.

Kiev 4A (I think) in disguise. I call it the Contaxski. It is good fun to use.

Never owned Kiev or Contax but knowing history behind Kiev it isn't that big surprise that it's hard to identify fake for amateur like me. Combined with black paint looks sassy
Sonnar is at least real deal? :)
Not likely. The "Sonnar" looks like a Jupiter 8-M lens. Still a very good lens though.

Definitely a fake Sonnar, Aapo. Dez is right. It is really a Jupiter-8M, as seen on my other un-disguised 1978 Kiev 4A, which just arrived today. It still behaves like a real Sonnar lens, with good contrast and bokeh. I think the lens coatings may have got better on the late 1970's lenses, as flare resistance is good too.
