Rokkor 40 lens shade

I recently acquired a Rokkor 40 from another member here on RFF, but it came without a shade/hood. I've gotten into the habit of almost always using a shade, so my first question is: Is a shade as necessary as I'm making it? Am I just compulsive about this?

Regarding the Rokkor:

I've looked around for an original rubber shade, but they are few and far between.

I had a couple of ideas for a shade and I'm wondering whether they might work.

1. Use a step-down ring from 40.5 to 39 and utilize my Summaron shade. Would stepping down to 39 impact the field of view of the lens?

2. Use a step-up ring and buy another shade to fit that ring?

3. Use a series of stacked step-up rings to make a shade of my own? Would a "ridged" shade be a problem as opposed to a "smooth" shade?

It seems as if whatever I do, I'm going to have to get the shade away from the aperture ring enough to fit my fingers in there. That's a reason I'm not sure about just finding a plain old aftermarket 40.5 shade.

Presumeably this is the lens for the CL/CLE, early ones are 39mm non standard filter thread, later ones are 40.5

I use the vented metal shade that Todd shows in his post on my 40mm rokkor. I think I bought it from the e_ay seller "american_eagle". It came with a generic 50mm lens cap. Adjusting the apertures is a little less ergo than the lens without the hood, but the hood really works for just a few dollars.

I use the same one as Todd.Hans (second one listed) its metal and looks close to a leica hood. Also a 55mm cap will work on the hood. Put it on a Canon 50mm 1.8 that I just picked up and like it as well. Seems the Canon, which I thought took a 40mm, takes this one, 40.5mm.

Todd, thanks for the link to the vented, metal hood. I have been looking for this type of hood for quite some time., so I ordered one. BTW, where do you look on ebay to find these obscure little goodies?

The rubber hoods are fine but in my experience most of these rubber hoods don't last very long. They dry out, and crack quickly with repeated use.

I have both and the vented metal hood stands out a little so you can get at the aperture ring on the 40/2. The rubber one does not stand off and it's very difficult to get to the ring.

I layered thin strips of black gaffers tape on the aperture ring knuckles of my
40Cron to give them a better grip and make them a little taller than the ring of the lens shade. It helps- I now know by feel which is the lens shade ring and the aperture ring.
The Ameriacn Eagle hoods are a great find.
