View Full Version : Save me from myself
I must be crazy.
Ok, I put my pretty much like new chrome CV 35 Ultron in it's box and actually have considered selling it. I want a black lens, I am loosing it.
Talk me down.
So, the plan was to sell the Ultron and buy a Biogon. Not a bad trade off, can't say anything bad about either lens. But because my Ultron is chrome?
I think I just like the thrill of going to the post office and then waiting for a package in return.
Ok, remind me that I am nuts.
Anyone want to trade a black Ultron for my chrome one?
Sick I tell you.

Rover, this is perfectly normal :) I did the same, only I got a 35mm Cron. Not what you wanted to hear was it?
The pursuit of perfection is never a bad thing...and you know it'll just nag at you until you change the lens... :)
Rover,
This might help?
What color do you want? (http://www.sharpie.com/sanford/consumer/sharpie/index.jhtml?_requestid=99913)
In fact, for your kind assistance earlier this week, I'll send you one in any color you'd like!

It is call GAS syndrome.
I am thinking of starting a self help group. Local groups could meet in church basements. All members would speak at each meeting. All the little speaches would begin
Hello, my name is x and I have GAS. Then go onto describe all the stuff they have and why they realise they need no more.
At the end, new members would be introduced to older mentors who would would be on call to help you thru the rough spots.
You might be encouraged to take up drinking or gambling as a substitute.

The 35 Biogon.

kinda funny...i was just about to start a thread called, 'i'm beginning to obsess'...and talk about selling some of the om gear which i figure would get me about half way to the zm 50/1.5 and putting up the rest of the cash from my own pockets.
that lens has me near paralyzed with an all consuming endless daydream about it and the images i imagine i would make with it.

Take three yellow pills (or blue if you must :p ), a swig of cognac, a good night's sleep and see things in a new light tomorrow morning.
No, M Biogon. The Contax will be a 50mm machine. I always think about getting a Jupiter 12 for LTM, but I have the Canon 35/2.8 so that should satisfy my need for the classic look in 35mm focal length.
Len for lens, Ultron for Biogon just because I would buy a black Biogon. If my Ultron was black this would not even be considered.

I like this plan. I make it till the kick off of tonight's football game, pour myself a nice glass of single malt.......

i'd like a black 35 zm also.
mine is silver but i prefer the black body and it would be great to have my favorite focal length on my favourite body. (ya know, matching, i use the silver on black combo now)

If it's only a matter of that, why not just sell it, get a black one?
You could get a Canon 35 f/1.5 for less of what a new Biogon goes. Then again, it's black and chrome, so perhaps you'd be half-sold on that idea. ;)
I say this: will you miss your chrome lens? Will you miss the ability to take the images taken with the Ultron?

Ralph, go for it. The obsession won't let you sleep otherwise. I used to cry myself to sleep before buying my Summilux.
Now... I do the same wondering why I paid so much for it.
But then, when I use it, it feels good.
Any chance you can use your Ultron as trade-bait? Consider that path too...

The best part is: When you finally get the "good gear", you start to wonder if it's worth it. Then you start selling off, and get a cheap camera. Two months later you're longing for the good sh*t again.
It never ends.

Happy to be of service, Earl!
I've had a busy week buying/selling gear, but not spending any new money, so it's all still in balance.
See, isn't this a fun conversation?
Ray, stay away from the Nokton. I keep that, but do need a little lighter lens for general use and walking around. I have to admit though, that indoors, the Nokton has found it's way onto my M6 quite often.

"Not seeking, not caring, not wanting."
--I Ching--
I think chrome lenses today are very retro and thus very camp. As are chrome-bodied cameras - and sometimes cheaper. In a world where everyone's toting about a black DSLR or SLR, chrome is a real head-turner.
"Wow! How old is that thing?" Or, "What's that?" I got this quite often when I had a Yashica GSN. (Speaking of lenses, as we are, don't you wish you could unscrew that one off the GSN and put it on a Z1 or an M7 or an R3A? What a wonderful piece of glass).

I have been "stuck" on what gear I have, except that pusher Gene made me buy an M42 body w/ 50/1.8; he tricked me by throwing in ("The first one is free, buddy") a CZJ 135/3.5 M42. Then a buddy at work also gave me a Helios 44-M to go with the M42 body. So all that for the $20USD that Gene wrenched out of my wallet for the body and 50/1.8. That's pretty balanced, I spose.
But I've gone and bid on a Bounce Grip 2 and flash cord for the OM-1/2N bodies and T20. It's local and I won't go very high as I don't really NEED it, but if I can snag both for $30 with no shipping, that's still pretty balanced, right? RIGHT????
That's pretty good Earl, you show remarkable restraint/control.

The one thing to allways remember if you're trying to be cured of Gas is you're dead for a long time.

And as further proof, unchecked desire causes new life :)
Everyone, I want to report that I am better this morning.
After reading Ray's post and then sitting back to reflect in the glow of the TV watching the end of the Colts v Pats game, I realized that he was saying that I already have the black 35mm lens I lust for, the Nokton. So all is better this morning. I am OK with my chrome Ultron.
empathy.
I've got GAS bad lately. I am dirt broke, but I want to buy another camera so bad I can't stand it. Or a scanner. Or SOMETHING.
Tonight I was looking at 4x5 cameras again. And at Retinas. Then the Hexar AF again. Then some M4s. What am I thinking? It's 3:12 and I have to get up in three hours.
Sickness.
It's real, people. I want you to know, it's real.
I'll see you in time.
do remember that the black ultron won't cut it. Paint chips off to reveal a brass lens! U need the biogon mate!

Sick I tell you.Honestly, if you just want to change your silver lens for a black version of the same (or something similar), what's the problem? Sure it's vain, but it probably won't cost much and it'll make you happy.
If you were oscillating between different lenses, selling and re-buying the same gear, then maybe you might need help. If you're always trying something new, it's not a bad thing; you're exploring, learning, expanding your experiences. Maybe it's unnecessary expansion of experience, but it's relatively harmless.
When you start hiding it from your spouse, when you stay up late after the family has gone to bed so you have quiet time to track down that "special lens", then maybe you need help. Until that point, have fun but be careful.
Just my 2 cents...
P.S. After I posted this, I read that you solved the problem. In either case, my opinion remains unchanged. Cheers!
Could you imagine if they came in more than two colors? :)
Collect them all! :) (popular Pokemon saying)
My M6, all my Canon RFs, any other classic RF I find will be chrome. Chrome lenses look nice on chrome bodies.
I was just caught up in the hunt yesterday I think, the need to sell and buy just for the sake of selling and buying.
If the 35 f1:1.2 came in silver it would be big time kamma-citta for me
;)

Ralph, the Ultorn is gorgeous in chrome! I have one and I've seen it in black, and it loses something in black--borders on ugly, plain-ness. You've something unique in the chrome version. It's the Palomino in your stable, the calico in a neighborhood of tabbys. Take a breath...Relax...Step away from this. ;)
