4 film types, where are they described?

The original RD1 has 4 film types in the camera settings, standard, and then film 1, 2, and 3.

Does anyone know what these differences are?

This is for the original firmware, I'm not sure if the "upgrade" still has 4.

On the R-D1s firmware you can adjust the "4 film types." Basically it's just an adjustment of contrast, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction, etc. So the four types are basically just 4 presets for jpg images.

My Ver2 firmware has standard, plus 3 film types. If I'm not mistaken, these 4 settings existed in the V1 firmware and the settings may even survive the V2 firmware upgrade.

I had changed a few of them and then wanted to know which was the original setting, so I initialized the settings and the defaults came back.

Standard ? ? ? ? ?
Flm1 portrait: E=M-, C=M- N=L
Film2 landscape: E=M+, S=M+, N=L
Film3 night: N=H

All others =M


My question for anyone, What are the settings for "Standard"? All 5 =M?

And certainly for the jpegs, but does Epson RAW converter use these settings?

It seems to honor the 'film' settings if you use the "as shot" in the pull-down menu of the Epson PhotoRaw app.

As for "Standard", the manual says, "Use Standard if no particular profile is required."
Shoot a four shots, each with a diferent 'film' setting, and open them with the Epson PhotoRaw app. Set that pull-down menu to "as shot" and the 'film' type particulars should be revealed.

Same for me, R-D1 with firmware v2. All had the same "M" settings. But as I shoot mainly RAW it is not of a big importance for me. Used it once for a low-contrast lens, but got rid of changing the film settings with every lens change.

The readme file for the firmware upgrade states the following:

After the Firmware upgrade, the user’s “Film Settings” set-up will be maintained. In order to reset the Film Settings back to the camera default set-up, you will need to perform an “Initialize Settings” from the Settings menu. This will, however, also reset all user selectable camera settings back to default set-up.


If for some reason you'd like to try the v.2 defaults, you'll need to either manually enter them or do the initialize settings thing.

I think they are trying to simulate some films; however due to copyrights etc Epson can’t name these films.

In any case, I get different film types of images with the different film settings, even when user settings are the same, is this still the case with v2 firmware?
