Critique #58 *Landscape Theme* 5 Participants

Welcome to this critique thread. Please read the purpose statement and the guidelines/ground rules regarding participation.

Purpose
The primary purpose of this thread is to provide a forum where photographers can give and receive constructive criticism on one another's photographs. By setting up some basic guidelines we hope that this thread will provide a forum where the give and take of honest constructive criticism can help us become better photographers.

Guidelines/Ground Rules
The thread has very specific rules regarding participation. The one basic rule is that you cannot provide criticism on an image or comment in a critique thread unless you also have an image posted. To post an image to this thread you must be a participant. Participation in this thread is limited. Here are the guidelines and ground rules for participation:

• Participation in this thread is limited to 5 photographers
• Participants join the thread by posting their intention. You can simply reply with your intent to join by posting something like: "I'm joining," "I'm in," or just state your name
• Joining is on a "first come, first served" basis. The first 5 to reply become the participants.
• Please, only join this thread if you are able post an image within 24 hours of joining.
• Once the thread has 5 participants, no other photographers can join or participate in the thread
• Once the thread is full of participants all photographers will upload their image(s)
• Please abide by any thematic requirement (e.g., landscape, portrait, etc.)
•The number of photos for each participant is limited to one
• Photographers attach photos as thumbnails (no inline images or links)
• Photos should be standard screen resolution (72~90) and the longest side of the image approximately 10 inches in length.
• Photographers post their images supplying titles (if any) and other pertinent information (the amount of information should be minimal)
• Photographers can only comment on their own images and reply to comments only when everyone else in the thread has posted their comments on the image
• Every participant must comment on every photo (except their own—initially)
• Every participant must make at least two comments, one positive comment, and one constructive criticism (which is actually two positive comments)
• Once every photographer has commented then a free flowing discussion begins. It is at this point that every photographer can comment on their own work and reply to comments, ask questions, etc.
• The participants decide when the thread closes.

I'm in. Raid and Ray, please excuse my absence from the last open theme critique. It will not happen again! I finally completed my critique there today. Unexpected hospitalization, I have moderate to severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. Everything's fine now! Landscape is what I love!

Nico: Your image is [as usual] a quite interesting interpretation of the themefor this thread. We see an urban landscape in the "mirror" and in the street. This is original and fresh.

Jeff: Your image is beautiful. The logs/rocks sems to be floating in the water. The scene is serene and pure. The boat with the three people in it add a touch of civilization to an image from the past.

emraphoto: I would do some cropping to bring out the structures, which seem to be the points of fcous for you here. The open foreground does not help.

Hi,
here my critiques on the posted photos.

Jeff,
I like this one, great light and composition. I like the tones and the details. The mist and the boat in the background make the shot. I would not change anything here. :)

Raid,
last tuesday i tested my new old agfa isolette on a beach near lucca, hope to get some good results. Anyway, what I like here are the soft colours and composition. As improvement I'd like to see the middle of the sky a little bit darker. :)

Emraphoto,
it's a strange photo, looking at this one i have a sense of abandon, it seems the windows are closed with wood panels. As Raid suggested some cropping to bring out the structures would also help to have more contrast between the green of the wall and the cloudy sky. :)

I am taking the liberty to explore a slightly different version for each of Jeff's image and that of emraphoto.

emraphoto's image was changed to greyscale and was cropped to focus on the building. It looks different now. Is it "better" or "worse" .... ?

Jeff's photo looks great as it is, but I wanted to see a vertical crop for my own interest. I also added some contrast.

your re-working of the my entry seems to ENTIRELY miss the intention of it. sometimes a photograph contains depth beyond a pretty picture. context in this case. the building is only an element... not the point. the immense foreground and blacktop has a value. there is nostalgia for some... nothing for others. to CLEARLY place the building itself in focus would be overly manipulating that sense of nostalgia and would alienate the majority of viewers. you get a "glimpse" and that is intended to cause reflection. there is also an OBVIOUS point of the rule of thirds, and horizons... and my attempt to bring both new iterpretations and personality to said rules. the colour is also part of a package intending to convey a faded (or fading) mood. no super saturated color's of a modern digital era... supermarket, overexposed point and shoot.
if you look at koudelka's work on the black triangle you will glimpse the inspiration behind the photo.

nico, and i don't say this sarcastically, weird is perfect. i am very glad the photo gives you the sense of abandon. the framing has a very strong intent... i would not exclude the value of the foreground and count the building as the clear intent.
