View Full Version : grip for fed?
has anybody ever tried making a grip for an FSU camera? I have a nice fed3, which has no strap lugs, and its a pain to carry around. Or may be someone has other tips on how to get a better grip ;)
nice!
i dont know any machine shops, but I guess I could get a slob of aluminum and just start filing away. :)

Or you could put it back in its never-ready case.
i hate the never ready cases. I am never ... ready with them :o

I know what you mean. Especially true of the Soviet cases which are made of really hard leather which will not bend like I like. I'd take off the top bit and just use it as a half-case - It'll give you some extra comfort.
Hi, have you considered seperating the two halves of the case with new pop studs. I find this very useable.

Dave..
A machine shop and some aluminum will do it. :)
Very cool. Is this yours greyhoundman? How much did it cost you?
Hmmmm more details needed Greyhoundman , It just happens that my day job is jobbing machinist in a small engineering firm plus I have a workshop at home also ;)

I am wondering why you used aluminium ? I made a grip for my Contax (slr variety, sorry) out of an offcut of hard quality plywood, glue and long woodscrews. It did mean that the base was 9mm thick though, so maybe that 3mm alloy strip you find in the hardware shop would be better for the bottom of the grip - with easy-to-shape plywood for the finger part .....
yesterday I made a quick halfcase from a not-so-good fed5 case.
then I was thinking of how I could make a simple grip not having access to any kind of special equipment. and here is a scketch i came up with. What do you guys think about it. One thick sheet of metal cut and bent, then a piece of wood screwed onto it. see attached scketch.

Lubitel, that looks like a good grip you have made. The grip part could be make out of rubber as well, but may be harder to shape.

Tom
well, i havent made it yet. its just a plan. :D I'll have to visit the hardware store and see if this plan will work out.
Looks good lubitel. I like the simplicity of it. I think I might try out your plan. I might do a little "tweeking" with the design. :) Thanks for sharing your plan.
make sure you post your results :) I think it also needs a little loop for a handstrap.

Looks like with the fed 2, you could just drill and tap the camera to bolt a grip right to the front with machine screws, skipping the bottom plate portion of the grip.
