I'm itching for A Kiev right now (no, no one can stop at one FSU). But I can't really justify it to myself, however cheap it might be; almost. I thought maybe it wouldn't be too bad in the eyes of the world if I bought one of Alex-photo's lots of parts bodies (such as http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330039863214&fromMakeTrack=true)
and attempted to make me a working Kiev from the wreckage.

I'm not experienced, but I am patient; and it might be fun, if lengthy. But how difficult will it be? Has anyone here done a similar thing? Interesting project, or mad?

I think Russ Pinchbeck has done such a project, check on the Kiev survival site ;)

The problem with alex-photo's lots are that hardly any of them have lens mounts. Make sure at least one of bodies in the lot does before you make your purchase.

And definitely check out the Kiev Survival Site. Talk to Pinchbeck, as well. He posts here and is a really nice guy.

I have a Kiev 4 and a 4am for sale. Either one with a J8m is yours for $60 + shipping.

I used his "parts body" for repairs once; it was in good condition aside from the missing helicoid/lens mount. Those probably go to that HK adapter guy..

Thanks a lot, Peter ... am very tempted, but now I'm sort of excited by the prospect of a project.

Have checked the lens mounting (thanks captainslack, I wouldn't have spotted that at all - near miss!) and plumped for one lot, to cobble together a 4am hybrid.

Will keep everyone updated on progress!

Thanks,
Tim
