In another thread I asked Bob Rogen (aka bobkonos) about his black M3 as painted by Shintaro.
Well, he has graciously forwarded the photos and asked me to post them for RFF's collective mouth watering consumption.
Looks pretty good :) Thanks Bob!

Thanks for sharing. I'm not convinced about the spackled look. The subtle shine of the current Leica black paint is sumptious. The spackle looks very stealthy though. I bet it won't even show up on radar.

Dang, I never could follow instructions. Clicking on forbidden links has been an expensive lesson at times...

I missed that other thread, so...is the chrome stripped first, and if not, does Shintaro have options for such things? The powder coating looks pretty cool, but yeah, make mine smooth shiny black with brass under it. :) And it looks like (judging by the bottom plate, which looks real nice) that the engravings are white, is that correct? Oh, and how much will all that cost me? :)

It does look good. I prefer a smoother finish than the bumpy stuff. Its cool most people here are users and don't fret about the resale value of a repainted M3.
I bet it might go for more on epay in this black paint than a chrome M3 though. Black is pro yo!

How much does shintaro charge for this lovely service?
Thanks for sharing!

All,
Glad to share, and BIG thanks to Tom for making it happen. I hope to provide more for you to see in the near future.
I cannot tell you how much the repaint cost because this camera came to me from a friend who got it on eBay. I was not looking to get a black M3 (heck, my MP is chrome), but this one came along and the deal was too good to pass up. I use it, enjoy it, and you oughta (hopefully will) see it with the chrome CV 28 with the rectangular hood in the same rough stuff finish as the body.
flipflop,
Please PM me: got Nikonos goodies for ya.

Got wet paint all over myself. Darn!
Hey, that's a neat camera! :)

According to his website, he does strip the chrome first. I can't wait for mine to come back from CRR.

Shintaro charges $500 just for painting. Yes, he strips the chrome. If you have to have dings removed, thats extra.
Apparently he's been really hard to contact lately, and one user (jaapv, I believe) says his camera and his money has been with Shintaro since February and he hasn't received any communication from him at all! I'd try CRR...

I've been awaiting the return of your black M3 with more anticipation than the magenta M8. I have a feeling it will spur a new round of GAS for many of us :) Can't wait.

That's the best line in that movie! There's actually a band called None More Black and I still chuckle occasionally when I listen to them.

No offender here. I love black paint M3. But if I cannot afford one, I'd prefer to get a chrome M3, instead of chrome one re-painted black. ;) ;)
BTW, I adore my black anodised M6, though I know many don't like the finish. :)
Is this finish on the shintaro M3 "black hammertone"?

Pardon me for asking, but is that black spackled powder coating? If so, it will last for centuries. Dare I ask how much does it cost?

I think Bob got it from a friend, who in turn, got it from Ebay (already painted). So I don't think he knows how much it costs to repaint it.

Lack of paint. Patina:D That, to quote Zaphod Beeblebrox, is bad for the eye. Money alone can't buy that (but it helps at the start).

Hi All,
The finish is not black hammertone, but more like a black "spackletone." The finish is matte and thick and a bit rough in appearance, and unique to my eye.
Tom is correct: it came to me without knowledge of the cost for repainting. Oh, by the way, the white lettering on the top plate is perfect.

Sweet. Why not just have brushed brass top and bottom plate?
Try this: brushed brass M4-P w/ BP 50mm Summilux. Yea, baby..
It actually looks similar to the black paint found on the R2a/R3a (these cameras have a spackled paint look as well).
Anyways, looks really cool!

$500 to paint a camera? And then the painter MIGHT get back to you? Sometime. Lord. No wonder Leica shooters have a, well, strange reputation. You could have the thing taken apart and rechromed for less than that. But why do any of it? It would ruin the shooting aspect of it, always worrying about scuffing it instead of getting the shot. Buddha said that desire was the cause of all suffering. I am beginning to wonder if buying a camera isn't the real problem.

I have it on good authority that buying a black paint Leica is listed as Sin #7, chapter 31, article K in the order of the Big Seven.
Nice camera. May it serve your vision well!
the nikon f2t style paint looks soooooooooo goooooood!!!
The term for the finish is "crackle" finish and was developed for use mainly on engines to hide imperfections in castings. It is a different finish than the Hammertone, which is smoother to the touch.
I have a M4P in this finish with matching Rapidwinder. It is a bit of a stealth camera as it is pretty well non-reflective and carried against a black jacket or sweater, not very visible.
The M4P is one of my "original" ones - bought new in 1981 (i stocked up at that time - bought 4 of them initially and added some more later) and it had accumulated multiple dings and scratches over the decades, so the Crackle paint finish hides some of that.

Tom, on a related issue- are you aware of what type of plating was done to the M6 Titanium version- and whether this would work in practice for other models? If so, any ideas who might be up to doing it?
Can't afford to spend the bucks for a real black paint leica M, so I'm gonna paint a M4-p top plate black semi gloss on brass! I don't touch the original top plate, just bought a raw brass one for relatively cheap...
The titanium coating on the various M titanium was a form of Titanium nitride coating. It is somewhat complex process but I know for a fact that Leica did a couple of M4's with Leicavit MP's for Jim Marshal in this finish. I have no idea if they will do it for us "regular" folks though. I also suspect that it would be VERY expensive.
The Titanium finish is supposed to be a bit more scratch proof and "rub" proof. It does not change the strength of the top or base plate - and they will still "ding" or dent just as easy as a black or chrome top (speaking from experience here).

I have an M4 that the previous owner had black enamelled by CRR. It's a work of art. The finish is superb, the detailing is flawless, and the mechanics are smoother than the MP.
