Threre must be more Nikons out there. I can't belive there are only 5.
Hey Vince, is that a keyboard from one of those fangled new computers beside your camera? :)
I'm guessing that because of the fancy late-model Nikon you shoot! :)
I wonder how many of us on RFF still have residual muscle memory for hitting the carriage return. Maybe someone could write a program for a bell to go off when we get near the end of a line.

Nikon S3 + 5cm 1.1

Jenni's SP is lovely and Kiu's 1.1 50 is awesome. My dad recently found and gave to me his old Nikon manual (book) that covers the S, S2 and SP. A very interesting read covering all the cameras (obviously), all the lenses, lens design theory, film, developing, etc... Anyhow, the SP and the 50/1.1 were the stand-out pieces of equipment as I paged through it earlier this week. Nice to see them both here.

Here is my Nikon S2 + black Nikon Ftn and Nikon/Contax/Bessa/Olympus team. Strange reflection on lenses came from my moving flashlight and 2 sec. shutter speed. ;)

Man, that SP 2005 is some serious eye candy! Wish Nikon would release for sale the 35mm that accompanies that camera. As long as I'm wishing, I also wish they would price the lens so one doesn't have to sell a major organ in order to afford it.
Regards,
Charlie
And don't forget a digital SP so that we can keep using all those great lenses.
I have to admit, the Nikon looks very cool. In a "bad boy" kind of way.

Very "bad" looking, indeed, Ray.
Frank, Very nice combo of the S2 with it's stepfather II. Did you get the II recently? Nice old collapsible Sonnar too!
Hi Huub, I acquired the Contax recently for a low price as defective, faster speeds with few difference but work well enough to shot a film with it. At slower speeds the second curtain often will not close. Except of some Zeiss bumps and a missing screw it don't looks bad and the rangefinder is very good visible (although overall finder is dim and dusty). Probably a service would add some usability.
My Brass Crocodile Dundee Nikon S.:)
Now need to shoot the sister too....
Mine is in the shop right now.
>>Mine is in the shop right now.<<
Welcome, Ken K!
I need to get my SP into the shop. My 9-year-old daughter knocked it down the stairs, and the slow speeds stopped working. I've still got my S3, S3-2000 and an S2, so I've been biding my time.

I see some real pretty cameras. They look so brand-new, I wonder if anyone has ever used them to take pictures. ;) Here's a few combos to consider.
The first is a synched Nikon M/S from January 1951 with correct hood and Nikon series 7 filter in hood holder with hood case.
The second is a Nikon SP all ready for some available darkness photography circa 1958 with BC-5 attachment and angle bracket and a 35mm f1.8 Nikkor.
The last picture shows a Nikon S2 with the earliest version of the 3.5cm f2.5 W-Nikkor (no click stops) with correct snap-on hood with original box, filter and case. Finder is later model bright-frame type.
Enjoy. WES

Two more Nikon RF pictures to show the extremes we sometimes go to. ;)
The first is a Nikon SP outfitted for a more challenging task. Yes, the tiltall will hold the 50cm Nikkor steady—barely.
Second shot was taken with 50cm of the distant hill you can just make out at the top left corner of first picture. Note the vignetting. This is caused by the small throat of the camera mount, not the lens-which easily covers 2 1/4 format. This lens does not vignette on a Nikon F with N-F adaptor either. You sould have seen the pictures this lens took when I first got it. Fungus on all glass surfaces! I cleaned them up and the contrast is back. Not sure about the resolution. Anyway, enjoy. WES

Could some kind soul tell me how to use the thumbnail attachment feature?
I tried for an hour to get it to work  ...tried loading both from a URL and by browsing my computer, the file szes and tags seemed to be correct...it would show an upload, seemed to be only allowing only one upoad, and when I'd preview the post nothing would show....:bang:
Nice shots.
To attach a thumbnail, click on the "post reply" button instead of using "quick reply." Or you click on "Go Advanced" while using the Quick Reply.
Then scroll down a bit, and you'll see a button saying "manage attachments" -- this will open a dialogue box allowing you to attach a file. I think the image can't be any larger that 800 pixels in the long dimension.

Is the flash sync for "X" flasher or FP (focal plane)?
The window in front of the shutter speed dial should say "FX" with the X in red. If you lift up on the outer chrome ring surrounding the shutter speed dial, you can change from FX to four different flashbulb settings.
>>here is the flash chart...<<
Try doing THAT with your digital point and shoot.

I just know I'm going to get hammered for saying this, but I don't understand why everyone posts pictures of their cameras. Everyone here knows what a S2 or whatever looks like, and truly, because they're all in very nice condition, they all look the same.
For about a pico-second I actually thought of taking one of these very nice staged close-ups and posting it, but then I reconsidered. Why bother? It's only a run of the mill chrome S3, something everyone here has seen a zillion times, so it's no big deal. And yes, I do love my camera. It's great for taking pictures.
Wouldn't expect any other type of reply from you, Robert. You have, afterall, made the same point on numerous occassions ;)
Taking interesting quality photos of equipment is a skill in itself, and I can appreciate it, when its well done. I enjoy these threads, just like I enjoy other photo threads.
Ok, so you're not into gear photos ..... so maybe you could post some pictures you've taken with your S3 sometime. I'd like to see some someday
I have made my feelings on collecting known before. And they haven't changed. but I'm not inclined to get into that again. Nobody wins that arguement. So collect away, if that's what makes you happy. And I'll just use my cameras to take photos.
I've got two shots made with the CV 21 posted in my gallery here, if you're interested. I've got others not yet scanned which I'll post when I do.

First time posting in this forum. I spend alot of time ( too much ) at fm.com. Lots of great looking cameras and I like to look at them! So, before I share a pic of my newly acquired S2, I got a dumb question--I'm a RF newbie. Is the lens cap for the 5cm 1.4 43mm? Anyway, I love the way the S2 feels. Much nice feel than my D300! I enjoy seeing the camera pics because it is interesting how everyone presents the cameras. Will it be a standard "mug shot", or something more creative? Moody lighting? Plain background or something special? Reminds me of a photography class assignment where everyone is supposed to take the same everyday subject and shoot it however they want.

A 1947 Kodak lens on a Nikon S3... I'm not sure what this lens was made for, got it with a "bunch of stuff". The top shutter speed is only 1/100th (or so), and it is unmarked. An experiment with left over parts from the 5cm f2 Sonnar collapsible lens mount. I believe that the "Anastigmat Special" is a Tessar formula lens, later renamed the "Ektar".
Master Brian... you really made me look 10 times before belive it!
Then I saw who did it, and all the parts fall in place.
Back to Zen mode.
I'm allways amazed.....

Well, its my first hour here, and I DO like looking at pics of cameras. The only piece of Nikon gear I have is a Nippon Kogaku Varifocal viewfinder, 3.5 to 13.5cm, with the pretty parallax lever at the rear, and that lives on ANOTHER breed of rangefinder....hope that isn't sacrilege or something!

Nikon S2 Black - Moving / Estate Sale find
I thought I'd share since the thread is Show off your Niikon RF.
I stopped by a moving sale about 10 days ago and bought a box full of camera odds and ends. I had thought the black case at the bottom was empty since other cases in the box were. The guy selling the stuff mentioned a camera in the box,
that his father had. I thought he was refering to the broken Yashica TLR that was there. It took me 3 days to get around and exam the items in the box since I thought there wasn't really anything to get excited about. I was wrong! When I opened the black case on the bottom of the boxI got pretty excited when I saw what it was. I felt a little guilty about it and returned back to where I purchased it. I was told by his exneighbor that he had left and moved the day before to somewhere in Europe that was unknown.
I am still excited about it .I can not wait to get some time and shoot my first roll of film through it. The only problem I have with it is a good problem - its condition is near mint and I am afraid to use for fear I might ding it, scratch it, or have it stolen.
Can anyone venture an amount that I should try to get it insured for?
Thanks,
Calphotography

The focus wheel is black your eyes are fine! I am new to S2 Blacks is that unusual ? The shutter speed dial is completely black as well.

When I saw the photos of your S2, I had to look at my S3/2000 again, as I remembered the wheel to be chrome on it.
Does the serial number start with 617xxx?
Black dials are pretty rare, according to the head bartender: http://www.cameraquest.com/nrfs2bl.htm

A while back someone over at fredmiranda.com found a Leica RF--can't remember model--at a thrift store and paid only $5.00 for it. No one believed him until he posted pics of the camera and the price sticker still on the camera. Since then I always look out for "old" cameras in thrift stores and yard/garage sales!
Nice find, but I too wonder where the $13,500 price came from.
calphotography

[ !Nice find, but I too wonder where the $13,500 price came from.[/quote]
The price came out of both a little ignorance about Black S2s, about the current marketplace, and not so much greed but REALLY liking the camera. I felt if someone liked it more than myself and wanted to pay the price then thats fine. I have not been in touch with the current marketplace.... I never thought I would have a Black S2. Looking for current comps was a little difficult.
I did list it on Craigslist along with my MS - I unfortunately can not justify having both cameras ... I am wishing to only keep one - right now I am more excited about the S2 Black. I have an appointment tomorrow to show the MS outfit.
The Yashica was a Yashicaflex that had been abused and forgotten about. It was in terrible condition ... want to trade something for it?:D :D :D
The serial number of the camera s 6170997 .... I beleive it to be a fairly late version of the chrome dial. From my understanding they started making the black dial pretty close after that along with the black/chrome lens.
There is some question if the camera would have left the factory with the black / chrome lens ... I do not know. It seems with the amount of use that the camera has had, which isn't very much judging by the condition of it, why would the lens have been replaced like so many of them supposedly did? Like I said I am pretty ignorant about S2s, I just have alot of questions
Calphotography
Hi there, I'm not here very often but I finally got myself a Nikon RF an S3, I bought it last month and I'm very happy with it :)
calphotography

Collectors insist the "proper" lens for a black S2 should be all black, but I don't fully agree.
By the time this camera was manufactured, the black and chrome lens was being produced, it is likely that it left the factory that way.
Most interesting is the black case.... Now, that's VERY uncommon, although common for a black camera.
Kiu
Your right thats not the popular belief .... I was trying to figure out why so many black lenses were separated from the S2 Black bodies - nothing made sense. I first thought there may have been something inherently wrong with the black lens that it had to be replaced but thats not Nikon's M O and the lens is the most sought after with the S2s. There could not have been so many lenses damaged after they left the factory.. It only makes sense to me that they did leave the factory with the lenses. I think it was on CameraQuiest site that I read that Nikon had mixed and match parts to use up the stock they had .That was the reason there are different variations of the S2. To me it makes sense that they would do the same with the lenses and bodies. But here again I do not know , I consider myself ignorant pertaining to Nikon RFs. To me, it seems like the only logical explanation.
Again I am trying to learn more about the camera. You said the black case was very uncommon. I take it thats because black cameras are uncommon ? were there any other type of cases for the black cameras?
Thanks for sharing you knowledge,
Calphotography

Thought I would share this one as well.... do not worry I am not as confused on this one as I was or am on the S2 Black
I know no one will probably believe me, but this was also an Estate sale find a couple of years ago. What makes this one nice besides all it came with is that it has the guarantee , all of the factory inspection certificates on the camera, lenses and varifocal.
It also came with the orange and white Nikon M manual but along with it is an instruction sheet from the factory explaining the sync operation of the camera that appears to be type written. Did the MS have its own manual or did Nikon just hand out the extra instruction sheet until they changed to the S ?

Here's a
few shots of my SP and S3 on a recent outing.
My choice is the 85mm, definitely. I used to have a 105/2.5 in LTM (my first Nikon RF lens at all), but I used it quite rarely, due to it's large size and the fact I prefer 85 over 105's. Although the chrome 85/2 (LTM) is somewhat heavy as well!
Now I add my black 85mm here (maybe I'm a collector of this focal length)
I love the size so much that I always wondered why the 105/2.5 is so much more common. Until I found some original retail prices: 85/2 was 175 USD whereas the 105/2.5 was just 152.50! So probably most buyers bought the just released 105/2.5, more "lens for the buck" than the "older" 85/2...

Damn that 85/2 black is a sweat looking little lens. If it were not for the fact that the 50/1.4 Millennium is such a great lens.... It would be a 35/1.8 and an 85/2 black on an SP!

I still haven't figured out this posting thing so here is the caption to the above shot! Cleaning out my Nikon drawer in the cabinet, I was surprised as to how many Nikon Rf's I have. It all started innocently with the replica black S that Shintaro gave me and over the last decade has "mushroomed" substantially. Fortunately, they are all users!
The front row is Nikon SP's, second row is S4's, third row is S3's and 4th row the S2's and last, but not least the Nikon S's. Obviously the black S4/black S are "fakes" and the SP is a replica, the S2 is potentially a real one, but I dont really care if it is or not. The black S3 is a 2003 version.
The "extra's are back-ups (SP.S3 and S2).
The interesting thing is that my total outlay for these is less than a new Leica MP would be today!

I actually have 2 more - Nikon S's in pieces. One has a dud shutter and the other one has a jammed focusing mount and there is also my R2S. I would never keep 13 cameras of any kind. Logic is that you get rid of one, but it usually means finding one more!

My new baby - a restored M/S. The first two photos show how beautiful it looks now. The third photo is the original condition and imagine the whole camera and back looking like that.
The story is that the prrior owner was a pro, and covered the leather with varnish to protect it. Well, it protected it from ever going onto the shelf of a collector.
I removed the varnish, and got the mechanicals all working again.

Keith,
Either way you will not go wrong. My S2 kit was a CV 25/4, Nikkor 50/1.4 and 105/2.5. It was as perfect a kit as I would ever need. When I moved up to an S3-2000 I added a CV 35/2.5 and am very happy with it. Only think I'm looking for now is an F to S lens adapter so I can get a F mount CV 15/4.5 to use on every system I have.
The S2 is a fine camera, black dials look very good. The S3 is like a Nikon F in rangefinder rather than SLR. I love the fact that my SLR system and RF system both move (focus and aperture) the same direction now.
It is a very different feel from my old Ms. I like it better because I can not give up having a long lens handy and have some great older Nikkor primes.

Keith - I'd go with the S2. For $1000, if you found an S3 or SP you may be disappointed in the brightness of the finder and clarity of the RF patch after moving from a Leica system. The S2 is perfect for a 50/1.4 Nikkor, which is a great lens, and has a nice bright finder. KEH has a black dial S2, I think with lens, for about $650 last I checked.

I used to have a 50f3.5 (not the macro - Nikon 1 lens). Good lens, but not better than a Red Dial Elmar on a Leica. Never aspired to a stereo - I get a head ache when my brain tries to convert to 3D!!!!
Ok, a S3M would be nice and cut down on filmcost. On the hand I can buy a lot of film instead!
My latest toy in the Nikon RF is the SC mount 50mm f1.5 Sonnar. Small and nicely made. Still have to process my first film taken with it. Now, if Zeiss really want to rock the apple cart - make the new 21mm 4.5 Biogon in SC mount!

If they did I would hope they'd do it in an Internal mount! Wouldn't that be less expensive (read very relative)?

Considering how few of the SC mount 50f1,4 that they sold. I suspect that this is purely academical anyway and my old 1957 Biogon 21 is still a great lens (though you cant see the f stops on that chrome barrel).

I kind of think if the sell out of the SC 50/1.5 there might be a reason to keep the workers busy with a 21 internal mount. Keep the number of parts low and see if they can improve upon performance. I never really understood why Pres. K. did not utilize the internal mounts for the SC wides he came out with.

Focusing only as accurate as the alternate system. The Voigtlander rangefinder works well enough, OR, since I'm cheating by using another camera for metering, I check focusing distance from the metering camera. FRAMING is another issue, the varifocal only helps to 135mm.

I think you are crazy and enterprising enough to accept my advice .... tries to buy a viewfinder "Tewe" it is not impossible to find and the focal reaches 200 mm.
Hello
S:
Think it will be far easier to make my own framing viewfinder, similar to the Sports Finders for Nikonos, if I were really to ever use this combo for some SERIOUS pictures. Before I found some other RF lenses, I went to the trouble of trying to find out which of my F lens would fit so I wouldn't be stuck in the 50f1.4 mode. I will try to find information about the Tewes finder.
Thanks, phi47
That's a perfect setup.
I like it a lot. My normal lens is a 35mm, rarely use a 50. The 85mm is useful for about 10% of shots. Except for the shutter release being in the "wrong" place, the SP is a great shooting machine. One could also ask for parallax correction in the 35mm framelines, but that would be quibbling.

Nice one! Looks like a great find, welcome aboard!
I wanted to get a Nikon RF for a while but high prices kept me away for so long. At a camera fair a few months ago I looked at an S but was disappointed by its relatively small viewfinder. It has its share of scratches and brassing but the viewfinder is very clear and it's proven to be a wonderful camera.

great combo: 50 and 21.
three questions: the hood for 21mm biogon, where can I get one, and second, do you need to remove the rear collar for use with nikon? third, which 21mm viewfinder do you use?
thanks.
I'm not Bill, but: (1) heavystar on eBay sells a wide-angle 40.5mm hood that will work w/the 21/4.5 Biogon (like the 35/2.8 Biogon, Zeiss Ikon never offered a hood); (2) no, you don't have to remove the rear lens guard; & (3) I use the original ZI 435 finder (w/a Hama bubble level in the top shoe), but I suppose any 21mm finder will work (the CV is supposed to be nice & is almost certainly brighter than the original).

thanks furcafe!
I just thought I'd mention in this thread that my new baby turned out to have a capping shutter which required a trip back to the US where the wonderful Pete Smith did his magic. Turned out that the camera had a broken shutter brake spring and needed a CLA ... it now purrs and is so smooth! He's a top bloke as we say here in Oz!
I'm very impressed with the Nikkor 1.4 that came on the camera ... what an enigmatic lens! :)

@keith - couple of questions:
1) is that 50/1.4, S mount or thread mount?
2) how much does it go for?

Hey ... I'm a total ludite with Nikon stuff ... S mount I guess or whatever they call Nikon RF mount!
I think you can get the same lens with the same optical formula in LTM which I would be tempted to do one day. I think Roland mentioned to me that he thought that they usually fetch around $300.00 to $400.00 ... someone correct me if I'm wrong. These Nikon rangefinders have a totally different feel to a Leica screwmount or an early M ... they feel mechanically superior IMHO! I'm pretty tempted to sell my entire screwmount collection and buy another Nikon ... an SP would be nice! :D

furcafe,
thanx for replying for me! I'm not sure if it was heavystar or the other company, but it was the one recommended a while back when I was asking about a hood. Regarding the rear lens guard--I wasn't aware there was one:) I just mount it and shoot away! As for finder, I use the CV one. Nice and bright. I considered the original one furcafe mentioned but good clean ones were more than I was willing to pay at the time.
Sorry for the late reply.

Here are my hybrid-Nikon ;)
Carl zeiss Rigid tessar 50mm F3.5 and Prominent Nokton 50mm F1.5. Nokton is little bit heavy lens but it is famous for its stunning swirl bokeh, (bokeh shot here (http://sangin1122.tistory.com/entry/Starry-night)) and compact Rigid tessar Produces very sharp image. (as good as Millenium Nikkor do.)

This is an SP that I picked up on RFF from meleica. It was pretty ragged when I first got it, someone apparently couldn't figure out how to take the back off the camera as there were pry marks. A little bit of creative repair work masked that, and then I spiffed up the rest with black paint. I left the bottom chrome, as it is riveted to the back, and I didn't want to subject the back to the chrome strip process (nor did I want to ruin the rivets.)
While I was at it, I cleaned the viewfinder and performed a 'C' (but not an 'L' or 'A.') The viewfinder brightened up considerably, along with the colorful framelines.
The camera is mechanically perfect, with an extremely quiet shutter, and is a dream to use.

The Nokton 50f1.5 is indeed a heavy lens, but it is very good with a striking out of focus. Are you using it with the VC adapter?
The Tessar 50f2.8 is neat - I have one in screwmount and it is sharp with a medium contrast. I did have the 50f3.5 Tessar in my previous Contax kit - really nice lens!
Yes, I'm using the Nokton with well made VC adapter. But usually adapters are little bigger than reissue Nikon RFs, so I need to force it when mounting it into the bodies. it's ok mount it on vintage Contax RFs or original Nikon RFs.

This is my latest lens in the Nikon Rf line -up. The rather elusive Rf mount 105mm f4.0. The first shots I took with it were all blurry and out of focus. Some head scratching revealed that some service guy had installed the front element backwards. A quick "flip" of the front and now it works well. Quite sharp and nice contrast too. It is very light (only three elements) and for "fair weather" shooting, it is easier to haul around than the 105 f2.5.

I bought this camera from LeicaTom last year (he was selling it for a friend - not sure, but I think Tom may not have yet discovered the zen of Nikon RF ;)). It was in great shape except for a completely useless shutter and some fungus in the lens.
http://images42.fotki.com/v1375/photos/1/1126243/6245389/NikonSplusLenses-vi.jpg
The mounted chrome S.C was originally sold with the body, probably in 1954. The black S.C and hood were a more recent acquisition (thanks, Robert!) in case the fungus in the chrome lens had done too much damage.
I sent the body and lens to Ken Ruth (http://www.baldmtn.com/index.html) who did a superb CLA. At my request, he replaced the original shutter with a non-original piece. Anyone guess what the donor body was?

This is with the Nikkor 25mm f4.0. It was shot with 100 asa Acros and most likely stopped down to f16 or f22. It is a very sharp lens, but it does have dramatic fall off. Kind of like that though.

This is with my first 25f4 = picked up for $300 as the front element had serious scratches on it! It does give the image a bit of "nuclear" glow to it in bright sunshine. In the end I used it as a Christmas present to a friend - who managed to have the front element replaced - so. now it is less "glowing".

Decided to remove the rewind on the panda SP to paint black...I got carried away and took the whole thing apart to paint it again, in a finish that has a bit more gloss. I'll post pics in a week or so.

A bit of an odd-ball. The Voigtlander Prominent Nokton 50f1.5 - by many considered one of the best high speed 50's lenses. Unfortunately it usually comes on Prominent camera - an ergonomic disaster. Camera Quest still have some of the adapters for using it on a Nikon (and Contax). I keep shooting with it and the film is backing up in the darkroom, but I hope to process this week-end. One S2 with the Nokton 50f1.5 and another with the Zeiss ZM Sonnar 50f1.5. It will be interesting to see how they differ.

Playing around with some cameras, I decided to put together a "working" kit from the 60's. Nikon S2/S4/SP and the essential lenses. A 21 - which most often was a Biogon 21f4.5 as the Nikkor 21f4 was scarce already then. A 35f1.8 - still one of the great 35's and the 50f1.4. The 50 f1.1 was available, but rather big and a bit prone to having aperture blades gather at the bottom of the lens. Of course, the 105f2.5 - a lens that in many ways made Nikon's reputation as one of the premier lens-manufacturers.
This kit and some 400 asa film, usually Tri X - would cover just about any job you had to do.
