Yesterday I had coffee with Chris Weeks. He bought up an interesting way to look at time vs photography.

Instead of adding up all the time it takes to setup, take, process and present your photography, add up the elapsed time they represent in terms of shutter speeds.

Depending upon how you average your shutter speeds, a million still pics only represents about 3 hours of our existence. hmm.

Yep. By that reckoning, I've only worked for about 2 hours of my life. :D

Since you can define time down the infinitely short lengths so a million pic can represent a period of time that is infinitely small...

Once I did some photo work for a friend who was a cabinet-maker applying for an arts grant. I set up a shot of a piece he had built, back drop cloth, lighting, etc. He said he was surprised how long photography took. I told him that the photography will only take 1/60sec.

BTW, how's my mate Chris doing? Has his skin gotten any thicker or is he still really sensitive?

In some cases three hours not worth a single picture!!

What about night long exposures? Just a couple of those and I'd be past that 3 hour mark :p

How many times a day do we blink? How long is each blink? So how many hours a day are we actually walking/working/relaxing with our eyes shut?

Wikipedia informs me that we blink on average ten times a minute, each blink is between 100 and 150 milliseconds...

A sixteen hour day is 960 minutes, thus, 9,600 blinks...this is taxing my brain...times .15 of a second...twenty-four minutes of a full day with our eyes wide shut?

Chris makes me smile with things like that.

How many hours do we add up when we think of something useful to photograph?

How many hours are there when the instants each keystroke is added up?

And how many hours are added up for the seconds we actually touch the money that we spend hours earning it to spend it on gear that will be used to take some of those pictures?

Check, please!

I picture Donald Sutherland in the room, too. Or maybe Johnny Knoxville...that would be sooooo (moreso than just "so") f**king extreme.
