Ok...so now I have a touch of GAS. I have a small clamshell Stylus but I think I'll look out for an XA.

From what I remember, the original XA is the one to get eh? The later ones have slower lenses and different build quality. Is that correct?

Maybe someone can advise on which version to get.

Joe Brugger
12-12-2006, 10:53
I don't think there is much difference in build quality. The XA has a rangefinder, others have scale focus and slower lenses. The XA4 has a 28. There are a couple threads here that spell out the details if you search for XA. Also look on

Definitely go through the list that Joe pointed to, as for me, I have both XA and XA2, but I never warmed up to XA2's zone-focusing (maybe I'll change my mind when my Pen-D2 came back from Photosphere from a long spa treatment), but I am definitely smitten by the rangefinder mechanism.

So I like my XA definitely more.

What I meant to say was that it's a very reliable system and you don't need to think about it most of the time. I've had other cameras with meters that required constant compensation.
The only exception I can think of is sun on snow or light sand. But since the ISO is set independently, you can cheat with that to overexpose a full or half stop. Some people complain about light falloff on the edges when shooting wide open, but that has rarely been a problem for me. I bought my XA in the first couple of months they were available and haven't found anything quite like it since.

Hey guys, I'm a new owner of an XA2. Please check out the images in my Gallery under the XA2 series album. These shots are from my very first roll through the camera. I found the AE to be very reliable, and the zone focusing worked okay for me. I am very impressed by the quality and design of this old classic P&S. The film used was Ilford XP2 Super.

Hi Earl,

I used a simple workflow for this roll. I had the 36 exp. roll of XP2 processed at my local Walgreens, developing and CD scan (no prints) for $6.50.

The Walgreens scanned images were post-processed in Photoshop. I didn't do much to them, mostly as follows:

- sized for web viewing
- desaturated to get rid of the tint
- dodging and burning, depending on need and desired "look" (not much needed for these images)
- levels adjusted via Curves function
- slight sharpening via USM

For more serious image manipulation, or printing, I would rescan with my Nikon coolscan film scanner, but I find that the Walgreens scans are adequate for posting on the web.

Hope that helps,

Warren

Cool... I use almost the same workflow as yours except I use Sam's Club minilab for $3.94 total for developing + scanning (no prints).

What is the typical resolution you get from Walgreen's scan? From Sams's I got roughly equivalent to 4 Mpixel digicam (which makes sense because that's how they product those 4x6 or 5x7 prints nowadays). Costco's minilab will give me higher resolution scans but they are also more expensive.

Your XP2 results are very contrasty. I like it a lot.

Here's one of mine from 5-years (!!!) expired XP2-Super shot using the XA:

Walgreen's scans are 1800x1215 pixels at 96ppi, resulting in 1.5 to 1.9mb files.
