I've been carrying around my Yashica GSN in a lowepro tlz mini, but I think that bag is little bit too big to be carrying around all of the time. I'd put the camera in my backpack, but I'm not sure how long it would survive in there. How do you guys carry around your rangefinders?

On a strap.
I know my GTN is tough, if I take it out it's just on a strap across my shoulders.
All my RF have got straps but I do have the same problem with you. It is sometimes not suitable to carry the RF on your shoulder just with their straps in certain occasions. I found the Lowepro "Photo-runner" fits very well with all my RF in term of its smaller size and compartmentations. Other than that, I have bought a detachable Domke in-fill compartment which can be easily fit into any kind of carrying bags. This helps a lot as you can change bags according to different occasions, which means you can always carry your RF around casually.

Usually with a small lens I'll carry it over one shoulder with a strap or around my neck if its a larger lens to prevent it from swinging on the side.
Otherwise,
WITH CARE
:)
Lately in a cargo pocket, or in a map case.
round the neck or in a billinghams photo hadley "man bag"
Camera round the neck and currently lenses in pockets. I'm thinking of a bum-bag (fanny pack for those across the pond) for those. Have never found a shoulder bag that stays put (not broad-shouldered enough) so its either that or a satchel/record bag. Important thing for me is hands free and all gear close to the body...
Usually in my left hand with the wrist strap attached, but if I know I won't be using it for an hour or so then in whichever bag I'm carrying. (most often a small Crumpler camera bag)

Hehe! same here: small Crumpler bag for moving somewhere and then in the right hand :)
Strap + cheap Lowepro Edit 140.
I used to love Leicagoodies' Sling, but am now too scared about pulling the eyelets out of the Leicas. :(

I used to use a finger sling (attached to the tripod socket and eyelet), but now I carry around the neck. I found it hard to compose vertically the old way, but nice when walking around. Now I have to keep a hand on the body, so it does not swing around. However, if I want to take a quick shot I just push the button.
In my side bag (man-bag) - kinda like a black canvas, unpadded domke style if you get me. Typical student bag.. If I have a collapsible lens it goes in the front pocket of the bag, if not it goes in the main pocket.
If I'm specifically out to take photo's the camera stays around my wrist with a tripod-mount wrist strap.
Maybe even with a collapsible lens I'll have it in my jacket or baggy jeans pocket.

I don't really want the camera visible.
I was wondering what kind of forces a GSN could handle. In my backpack there are lots things like binders, books, loose papers, etc, and it does get thrown around a little bit. Sound like a bad idea to carry it in my backpack?
If I'm using it, I carry it condition 3; cocked and locked.
Seriously, though, my Fuji has survived a lot of time in my backpack, in a padded bag. Don't think I'd let it get too friendly with binders and things, though.
Buy yourself a cheap camera bag (an old model they're getting rid of cheap). Something big enough for the camera. I picked one up on holiday for £4 or something stupid. It provides ample protection when there's other stuff in my bag as well.
35mm
On shoulder strap, under outer jacket, below elbow height, 35mm compact lens and hood, so it is discrete and does not scream photog. Film in pocket of jacket
J12 or pre asp Lux
alternatively 28mm but that is really bulky unless I take an Oly, wrong FORUM...
or
6x4.5 Folder in pocket, takes aeons to open, push on hood, etc. people are amazed when your leather PDA suddently turns into a bellows camera, 'you stole that from a museum?', what are your doing now - you are winding it on, what is the little red window for?

i almost always have one camera with me, usually with just the attached lens, sometimes with a second lens.
i use the smaller domke bags, the 5xb, for when the camera is not in my right hand, with a wrist strap.
the small bag also holds film, a cleaning cloth, and all my bags have an extra battery for the camera.

Well, there are so many circumstances and so many ways. In general, when shooting, I simply carry the camera in my right hand with the strap wrapped my right forearm/wrist so its secure and the strap is out of the way. I generally also have a pouch/bag (http://www.adorama.com/LPSFP60AW.html?searchinfo=lowepro%20sliplock%20pou ch&item_no=2) with film etc., a paperback and enough room to fit the camera plus lens. Mostly the camera isn't in the bag, but it can be. (BTW: does that count as a manbag?)
Sometimes, though, I pack the camera and lens separately in my lapop bag, when I'm working but just barely might get an opportunity to photograph. Whenever I'm shooting dSLR stuff, I find somewhere to fit the RF (or the OM-4T MF SLR) into the bag I'm using, or have it around the neck just in case the long lens isn't the right tool for the task.

I have a gaggle of Domke bags, the F-4AF holds my bessa bodies and lenses. I then use the 5XB for one body and three lenses max when I am out and about.
I have the mini grip on 2 bodies with Domke straps and the #1 body [R2] has a Luigi brown half case and strap.
I also have been known to clip a draw string pouch to a belt loop on my pants to have a spare lens or a place to stash a lens during lens swaping.
of course I should mention that my shooting is done from the seated position
in a wheelchair, so your mileage may vary;)

I'll expand:
Going out to take photos, camera in my hand.
Going to the bank and the supermarket, camera over my shoulder.
Going to a meeting carrying a regular sort of bag, camera in the bag.
Lately its my Leica II in the right pocket of my flight jacket with meter and (2) extra lenses in the left.
On a boot lace with a knot at each end. Less bulk when I stick it in a coat pocket. I usually leave a tail on one end with a fishing snap swivel to attach a light meter. That and a milk bottle lens cap and we're good to go.
Tuck the boot lace under your shirt collar to avoid ligiture marks...
Depending on which camera(s) and what else I'm doing, I carry differently.
For my alomost daily walk to work, I just loop the neck strap over my left shoulder. If I've got more ambitious photo plans, I have a small no-name bag that holds a second body, film, extra lenses, filters, cable release, notebook, hoods, etc and I wear that over the shoulder and a camera around my neck.
If I'm using one of the smaller camreas(XA or Agat 18), it just goes into a pocket.

upstrap rf. extra lens, film, notepad, etc. in a billingham airline.

This is my usual carry technique as well. Very descreet, and the camera can't fall off your shoulder or be snatched because of the jacket. Only time I ever had a problem was while getting patted down by airport security. From the look on the security guards face, am sure he thought I was packing "heat".

Crumpler 4 Million Dollar Home. It stays on my shoulder, it's cheap and it doesn't scream "camera". Perfect for leica body with lens and two other lenses. I have one of those couplers, which is now no good with the ASPH lenses I just bought, but is great with the older lense.

The number of people I see with LowePro - I coulda sworn if I was dishonest I could make a mint.
It's all well and good having these camera carrying brands, but they're becoming very obvious.
It's good to keep it hidden; like I said to Tony a while back, I look a mess, as far as a thief is concerned the best you'll find on me is some weed. Course, they're outta luck cos I dont smoke :D
I think people should be a lot more careful, especially with the kit people are carrying :)

I suspect that almost all camera bags are made in China, and once the production run ends the factory makes another few hundred or thousand without branding. Or with meaningless 'branding' such as Lucky River or Wild Adventure.
It's the only way that my local Chinese shop* can sell quality bags for well under €10.
*Chinese shops open all day seven days a week and sell anything made in China from about 10% to 50% of regular shop prices.

What happened??? I was thinking about ordering one of these this week... I wouldn't have thought you could harm the eyelets unless you were swinging around a L'flex with 400mm telyt-r. Anyone else have any thoughts on leicagoodies SLING &/or STRAP?

Yep, me too. Over the shoulder and under an open jacket/shirt/vest - the pockets of which hold the lenses and extra film (That's my main reason for using an RF, the cameras and especially the lenses, are small enough to get away with this). Until I actually shoot, no one has ever noticed that I have a camera. I love carrying a camera and full kit without looking like I'm carrying anything at all.

If I'm hiking which is often I carry my Hexar RF in a small waist bag. That means it is easily accessible when required, I do'nt have to remove my rucksack when taking photos and my hands are allways free. If not hiking I just carry the camera over my shoulder with a second lens in a pocket. I have 5 lenses but rarely go out with more than 2. That means my Hadley Pro spends most of it's time at home.

I use a long neck strap. If Im out shooting with a purpose the strap gets wrapped around my hand and Im ready to go. When just walking around from one place to the next or when I go out to the store or something it just goes on my shoulder or over my head so it hangs diagonaly aound my back or side.

My general carry around RF is a Contax T, a very tidy little camera, which makes it very easy to drop into a bag or coat pocket.
Billingham VG 380 for transportation. Model already seems to be discontinued. Remaining stock sells at low prices (I have seen 25 GBP). It's perfect for any RF of Leica M size with one lens (up to Tri-Elmar size).

I purchased a small olive-drab military style looking bag...11'' long and about 7'' wide...rigged with a few pads, it fits my Mamiya 6 with 75mm attached / collapsed like a glove and doesn't look like anything a camera would be hidden in...I took it with me to the Czech republik a few months ago, walked all around Prague (what a BEAUTIFUL city...posting photos shortly), and here in Philly / New york...no problems...It's got a few compartments for extra film / filter / cable release...works great :D ...but what do I do when I can finally afford the 50mm:confused:

I use a small Timbuk2 messanger bag with a Domke insert and a few lens cases for my Bronica RF645 - waterproof and flexible. I also use a Domke postman's pad on the strap to make it comfotable enough to carry all day.
How do you guys carry around your rangefinders?
In my hands... :D
Dave
Actually... the various Leicas do spend some time in my Domke f-803
In a bag and in my hand whilst using it.
Yup either on a strap over my shoulder, under an iuter jacket.
Or in my hand with the strap wrapped around my wrist.
