Hey RML, what date is the equinox in the UK?? I forgot to check!

Ash, check here: http://www.archaeoastronomy.com/2007.shtml .

For the UK and Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, it's on March 21.
For the US and Latin and South America it's a day before, on March 20.

But we'll stick to Wednesday March 21, 2007 for this project. To keep things simple. :)

With little more than a month to go, I'm getting excited about this project!

Here are a few details that are on my mind:

- How will the picures be submitted initially? (Web-friendly jpegs posted to a dedicated RF Forum gallery?)

- If the book idea comes to fruition, what image format/size are we planing to submit? Where should the images be emauliled/posted?

- Could we make it a requirement for submissions to indicate the time (approximate is fine) that they were taken?

- Since the remarkable feature of the equinox is the balance between daytime and nighttime, I'd like to encourage as many people as possible to take some shots in the wee hours of the morning, as well as late at night, to have a good representation of the entire day.

RML

Froyd, good points.

The details about the book (if any) we'll decide later.

We should ask for a dedicated gallery here on RFF.

I hope everyone will use the day to shoot from midnight to midnight. :p

I've been thinking about joining since the project first started but I wasn't sure if my photos would be up to par with the more experienced shooters here. However, I think that this would be a good learning experience for me so please count me in.

Nando, you're in. :)

Image quality has little to do with this project.
This is about shooting.

And if it ever comes to a book (or something bigger), don't be shy.
We all started out with nothing, and we all (hopefully) keep learning new things over time.

WHAT: a "Shoot all day" event

WHEN: Wednesday, March 21, 2007, a.k.a. "Autumn" (or "Spring" depending where you are) Equinox

WHERE: anywhere on this planet

WHO: anyone who is able and willing to spend some time (the more the better) on March 21, 2007, to shoot pictures for this worldwide event

WHAT CAMERA / SUBJECTS / TECHNIQUE: this is all up to you. Anything goes (well I mean, as long as it is legal, it will be alright ;-)

WHAT DO I DO NOW: just post to this thread, telling us "you're in" - or something like that

WHAT DO I DO AFTER THAT: just wait for the day to come (3/21, 2007) then shoot as many pictures as you can that day, and submit your best ones (you'll be your own judge here). In the meantime, watch this thread from time to time, to learn about the details and/or to participate in the preparations phase

WHY: to be shown in galleries in as many places as possible, to be published in a photo book, to be part of a worldwide event and to benefit charity (on which we will decide later on, in a poll)

I think it was mentioned here before, but I think everyone should try to remember about what time a picture was taken. If there will be a book or a show, then it would be intresting to look at them in the "right" order.

03-06-2007, 11:58
For those [like myself] who will have to be working and doing other things that day and squeezing in a photo when possible, it might be a good opportunity to practice djorourke's"Every.30.Minutes" (http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35883) technique. You go about your daily routine, chores, work or journey with camera [or cameras] in tow and stop to shoot a frame or two every thirty minutes, no matter where you are or what you're doing. It's fun and provides some interesting candid shots. ..... Just a thought for the masses.

I'm debating if I'll stick to one camera/lens/film combo or mix and match depending on the situation. Right now I'm leaning toward the restriction of using a single set-up and sticking with it all day... I seem to get my best shots when I'm forced to think creatively about how to use the equipment "I'm stuck with."

I'm leaning toward the classic combo of: RF w/ 35mm and 400iso BW film. I'll be working on that day, so I plan on snapping a few cityscapes and landscapes in the AM and PM, perhaps with a frame or two taken around lunch. I think that given the scope of the project, I'll stay away from portraits in favor of images that tell the story about how our world looked like on this specific day.

Is anyone planning to do something metaphorically alligned with the concept of the equinox (e.g. high contrast photographs, images about light, darkness, or the concept of balance)?

...looking forward to the day!

Are you excited? Are you getting up extra early? Will it be a one camera, one lens combo? What film are you going to use? How many rolls do you want to use? Or will it be digital/film combo? Are you calling in SICK? Does your family and friends know about this day? I am thinking on E100VS (early am) & Neopan 400 (in the afternoon I am thinking).
My lenses will be 24/2.8 & 28/2.8, with my F3HP. I know I am one of the few who will be using a slr, but I do not feel lonely!!! But my 'inner self' tells me to go crazy and shoot a lot of frames!

The day has been taken off!

I've arranged to partner with a social service agency in the area to do a photo essay on their work helping homeless families get back on their feet. Up at 4:00am to see the families head out of their temporary "home" in a church and back at 11:00pm after they have all gone to sleep.

Leica M6, 50mm Summilux and about 20 rolls of Kodak 400UC are going with me. Maybe the iiic with 50mm Summitar and 160NC for outdoor shots. I'll take a 10mp digital P&S (Canon A640) for wide/flash shots.

I'm not going to be able to skip work:bang: but I am getting up early enough to catch the dawn. And also will shoot some at mid-day. Sunset will be a bit more problematic--might or might not be able to step out side of work then, it will depend on how many people are sitting in the dining room at work and if I've already cooked their meals...
I'm tempted to use my Arax but I don't think I'll be able to get any 120 film by then(I'll be shopping later tonight and see if it looks possible).
So, 35mm and I am leaning towards pinhole--the easiest way for me to get truly long exposures.
Most likely UC400 film as I feel that color is the way I want to record what I'm thinking of: there is one big hill in the middle of my small town and I think I'll be up there as the sun comes up. Though, I do have one last roll of Kodachrome 64...hmm.
Just need to remember my umbrella for the typical early spring rain we have.
This is going to be fun!

The day (21 March) would have been my grandmother's 100th birthday.

Several years ago I went to her home town and photographed buildings old and new, and she enjoyed looking at the photos often and rememebering when she could have walked there herself.

This time I'm thinking about photographing my home town as a 'birthday gift' for her.

I just ordered a 10-pack of SHD100 and a 10-pack of SHD100 in 120 film. :) I may just be tempted to shoot some of that. Plus, the M2 can carry the 28mm pinhole lens. The R-D1 will do work as will the Eos 300D. I'm carrying my little FED-2 with collapsible 50 with me these days. It could just be in my pocket on the 21st as well. :)

A few thoughts as the day gets nearer and the excitement builds....

1. I don't know about anyone else, but I've had people ask what I'm doing next Wednesday when I scheduled off at work. To make an explanation easier, I've just started explaining and calling this "Project Equinox". Might sound kinda goofy, but it works for me and sounds less conspiracy-theory than calling it "The Equinox Project".

2. If we were to do this again, considering that some here have graphic design backgrounds (based on replies in the jobs threads), someone should put together a flyer so those of us participating can explain what we're doing or use as an entry to areas/venues we wish to photograph. I could imagine something playing off the 12 hours of light/dark theme, maybe black text on white and white on black. Who knows, but I know there are creative people here.

3. Were we going to try and get a special gallery established here on RFF for us to upload our photos when they're ready? I thought I remembered discussion of such previously, but could be wrong. Just didn't know if plans are in place for a common area to display our work once it's ready.

I think RML and doitashimash1te have gone a good job organizing this. I've been scoping out a plan and can't wait to have a day to play!

Quite so. :) But I have no idea what I'll do yet. I'm quietly thinking of doing some portraits.

I've just done a test session looking out of my window across the square with taxi stand, car parking, traffic, post box and people. I'm thinking of a day in the life of Praça Calouste Gulbenkian.

A camera on a tripod and a photo every so often of exactly the same view but with different elements coming and going.

Reminds me of Auggie's approach in the movie "Smoke" (1995) Interesting concept!

My thoughts are of those very long Andy Warhol movies. Six hours of an office building with lights going on and off. I remember seeing that one at the Screen on the Green Cinema in Islington London and being sustained by neighbors who had brought bottles of whisky for the four or six hours or whatever. I didn't know them but they passed the bottle to me every few minutes.

Just for the record: UPDATE THREE DAYS BEFORE HOUR ZERO

WHAT: a "Shoot all day" event

WHEN: Wednesday, March 21, 2007, a.k.a. "Autumn" (or "Spring" depending where you are) Equinox

WHERE: anywhere on this planet

WHO: anyone who is able and willing to spend some time (the more the better) on March 21, 2007, to shoot pictures for this worldwide event

WHAT CAMERA / SUBJECTS / TECHNIQUE: this is all up to you. Anything goes (well I mean, as long as it is legal, it will be alright ;-)

HOW and/or WHAT to shoot: doesn't matter, but analog shooters please keep in mind to keep a record of the exact time(s) of your shot(s).

A few thoughts as the day gets nearer and the excitement builds....

Who knows, but I know there are creative people here.

popstar you take the words right out of my mouth! I know there is little time left now, but is there anyone among us with a graphic design background (or just skilled in that respect) and a little spare time, who could put together a fancy flyer (PDF, A4 / A5) for this project?

This would be MUCH appreciated!!!

And a great image it is ... er, will be!!! :D Er, what camera tags jpgs that way? Do I have time to buy it? :p

Seriously, I spent a good part of the day today driving through a good part of Rochester and and surrounding area, even into the next county east where I used to live, taking notes ... moleskine of course! In the next two days I'll plan out my route and add more locations as I think of them. It was a great exercise as I discovered places I'd never been before.

My day will be all Kodak materials ... a lot of K64, Tri-X, maybe even some Plus-X or T-Max 100. Since I currently reside here, it's something of an homage to George Eastman.

Hm.. K64, now that sounds good! I still have two or three bricks of those beauties in the freezer. Feeding some of it to my Konica Hexar or Leica IIIf is a tempting idea! But that depends on the weather: K64 makes a sunny day sunnier, but a grey day greyer.

Looking at the Subscribers World Map, I wondered if we have all continents covered yet.

I see we have people from the USA, Canada, many Western European countries, some Eastern European, and Scandinavian countries, but do we also have people from:

- South America
- (South) Africa
- Russia
- Australia
- China
- Japan
- Indonesia

If you are living in one of these countries / continents, and you are not on our list of 114 subscribers, please jump aboard!!

Just can't help smiling..
My M3, which I was mentioning I was hoping to master by now quite early in the thread is lost in transit somewhere over the rainbow, and although I've been giving my Kiev 4A and Zorki 4s (the latter has a rather nasty habit of dragging it's second curtain, leaving my beloved LTM/M lenses with no safe 'rearcap' at the moment) and am planning to shoot with those and my Konica Minolta dSLR, nothing could have prepared me for the 6inch/15cm of surprise snow we have gotten over the last 24hrs.

The best laid plans of mice and men.... :)

I don't think I have missed a post about the submission procedure ? The requirements will affect what we shoot I expect - anyone in Europe using Kodachrome would have to wait a couple of weeks before the film came back, for example.

So, initially as a scan ? What file-format ? What size image ? Where to send it ? When to send it ?

Secondly, if there is a further stage after a gallery here (that possibility was mentioned previously), will prints be required ? If so, size etc etc.

My apologies if these questions are answered somewhere already.

One more day! For some parts of this world even less than that. :)

So, is everyone ready? Picked your gear? Your film? Your subject(s)?

For me it's probably the Canon Eos 300D to shoot my _Clouds and skies_ (http://shardsofphotography.blogspot.com/2007/03/clouds-and-skies-some-progress.html) project, my FED-2 (and perhaps my _Leica M2 Golden Dragon_ (http://shardsofphotography.blogspot.com/2007/02/leica-m2-golden-dragonno-longer-for.html)) for "street" photography, and my beautiful _Agfa Ansco PB20 Readyset_ (http://shardsofphotography.blogspot.com/2007/03/equinox-shoot-all-day-day-final.html). I loaded the Agfa with my last roll of 620 film and I plan to use it for portraits.

I guess all that will keep me busy for the day. :)

About a possible exhibition. I don't know how to arrange that here in Holland. I don't even know how to go about for my own photos. :) But I may be able to get us an exhibition in Mongolia. http://www.xs4all.nl/~acben/equinox/Equinox.zip (http://www.xs4all.nl/%7Eacben/equinox/Equinox.zip)

It's a 2.5 Mb download, with a small explanation of what it is all about (pdf, jpg and psd), which you can print and carry with you during the day. It's not spectacular though; it was 2 minutes of work in Photoshop. But it is more than nothing!

I have one idea .... and hope that it does not snow all the day .... :(
I really hope that the blasted cold wind ceases and that for once this year it becomes enjoyable to shoot outside here in the U.S. Midwest. What am I talking about, it's a photographer's paradise!

We'll see what transpires; "officially", Spring doesn't happen until just after 7pm today (edit: that's 7pm CDT). I've always thought of Spring Equinox as March 21st, so I'll think of that time as the beginning of the 24-hr Equinox span.

I wish I were in some Mexican ruin waiting for the Sun to come through that special hole on that special wall...

I have few quick suggestions:
* open a dedicated gmail acc for this, something like: project_equinox@gmail.com, cca 3gb should be enough
* type and size of file should be explicitly determined
* everyone should send one small/preview (cca 600px*something) and one big image
* and I would also suggest smaller number of pictures per person, something like 3 or 6 max, this would lead to better quality of overall project, and there will be fewer problems if someone gets the bigger number of rejected pictures in eventual exhibition (online or offline)

I'm way ahead of myself and the project but I'm thinking about an exhibition already. I won't bore you with the details here (and they're not final anyway) but you can read my thoughts on my blog ( http://shardsofphotography.blogspot.com/2007/03/equinox-shoot-all-day-day-thinking.html ).

It will be a really big project for me, which may well cost me more money than I'm anticipating right now. If you have any suggestions, ideas, comments or whatever, leave a comment in that posting.

If you want to help me, I can use all the help I can get. And if you really don't want to be exhibited, please tell me so too. Getting exhibited will mean you'll have to send your 20x30cm photos matted and backed to Mongolia. If the exhibition I have in mind is a success in Mongolia I may try to have it held in Holland too (though that would be an entirely new adventure for me). Things might very well not take place this year as getting a booking on a venue could be problematic. We'll see what the future brings.

HI this is my first post here :) My boyfriend Nikola talked me into this sproject equinoxe
so could I participate please? :) I'll use his Fed 3 with bw ilford pan 400 and mine Nikon f80 loaded with color film... i'm even thinking of writing down gps coordinates as we shoot along.

Welcome, Daria!

Recording GPS coordinates is a great idea, as would recording the time when a shot was taken. :)

You have a Mac quarter pounder with cheese and we have Mac Royal. It's the metric system. John Travolta explains it best in the movie 'Pulp Fiction'.

20cmx30cm is more like (but not the same) as 8 inches x 12 inches.

The ironic part is that the Metric system was born after royalty was thrown out; that little irony seems to escape many people, if it didn't, Travolta's assertion would be even funnier (which is the point).

Alert! Alert! Alert!

I was just checking the actual time of the Vernal Equinox this year:
It is at 00:07 GMT on March 21, or 8:07 PM EDT on March 20 in the US. (Earlier in more western time zones in the US). Does this mean we can start taking pictures at that time west of the Greenwich meridian? Anyone in the UK planning to stand on the meridian and take a photo there at 00:07 on the 21st?

As an interesting side note, according to calculations made by the famous astronomer Jan Meeus, this is the last time the Vernal Equinox will fall on March 21st GMT until 2102! Enjoy a sight not to be seen again until your great-grandchildren are shooting cameras. Think they'll still be using your Leica MP? ;)

From www.skyandtelescope.com: (http://www.skyandtelescope.com:) http://skytonight.com/observing/ataglance

The equinox (http://skytonight.com/presscenter/Northern_Spring_Arrives_on_March_20th.html) occurs at 8:07 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, when the Sun crosses the equator heading north for the year. Spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere; fall begins in the Southern Hemisphere. In Universal Time (GMT) the time is 0:07 on March 21st. This is the last time an equinox will occur on the 21st Universal Time until the year 2102! (per Jean Meeus).

Weather and work commitments seem to be playing very big roles today.

We chose this day so that everybody would have an equal amount of day and night wherever they were.

Now we see that even with 12 hours dark and 12 hours light some people (such as Ash) are going indoors to warm up, while others (such as myself) are trying to find somewhere cool.

The finished photos may reflect this global climate variation well.

Cold, windy and wet in Amsterdam today - though in between (tiny) showers the sun showed up more than once. I shot all day long, only stopping for a drink and a pizza slice at New York Pizza, when it got too dark and started raining continuously shortly after 2 PM.

I then left the city and drove to the beach, hoping to be able to get some nice sunset shots. Though it was not raining there, I doubt that the sunset pictures will make me very happy. 204 shots today.

My themes for today were:

- reflections
- light and dark
- people in motion
- seemingly meaningless handwritten messages on walls

I'm not too pleased about the look of my photo's.

I don't think I have anything special to contribute. I think I spent too long enjoying the day, and too little time concentrating. :(

Still valuable as a record of the day. I'm still stuck in front of the computer. I suppose I could shoot the view from my desk every 1/2 hour. :bang:

Often photos that are not there when we first look at the contacts appear as if by magic a day or a week or more later.

Humm.. I'm not so sure.

Most photo's of avebury are samey, and horribly unoriginal. I think this shot is one of my favourites:

Yes, most photos of Avebury are very National Trust.

You have to see the Avebury that other people don't see. I think you're studying art and should have time to spend seeing like this.

Why did you choose Avebury today and not your model who does the fashion type photos with you so very well? I can imagine him leaning on this stone very well in a CD cover type pose.

I can't resist it. . . "Ash, which one is older, the fallen megalith or the camera ? "

Of course, really I'm jealous.

Off out to find a little alleyway I saw earlier, but this time with streetlights on....

Back in for rest and refreshment after my day out. It wasn't bad in KC today (about 74F), though it has been pretty windy and somewhat overcast.

I woke up at 4:00 local time and was out the door about a half-hour later. I got some shots of the city at night and sunrise. Also tried to get some of people on their way to work, but with the wind, people were walking with purpose and not strolling. We'll see how they turn out. Went to the local museum as well. Lots of school kids on field trips. It's been an interesting day. If I get my second wind I may head out later, but the light is not great today, so no guarantees.

I completed six rolls. Hope that something is worth showing!

I finished my roll of APX100/36 in M6 on the way home from work. Got some cool shots, especially of a rowboat half covered in snow. Loading HP5 in the Hexar RF, taking my daughter for guitar lessons after dinner and then over to a mate's house for a guy's get-together. (Thinking I'll use the CV25 there.) I'm pretty confident that I'll have something. (Hope that didn't jinx it!)

Ash: I'd like your picture... without the camera in it.

Jon, I studied art for two years a college - almost a year now since I got my grade from it :)

I tried that approach and spent some time walking around, working out angles, and I realised every 'good' angle had a car or a roadsign or a tree or a pub in the way. That must be the reason all the photo's are the same :bang:

I considered calling Rich on my way down to the bus stop, but I'm not sure he would have been available. Oh well, the stones aren't going anywhere.

Martin, good luck :)

Oh, and to answer your question - that's anyone's guess :D :D

It was an awful day for pictures, for me at least. I went to the Mexican neighbourhood of St. Paul --something I rarely do-- to get my mood up; it did. The day won out. I think I got just a few photos that are worth something.

Now it's even gloomier and rainier.

I was up early hoping it wouldn't be cloudy so I could get some sunrise over my town from the roof of my 3 story office building. No dice there, but I did manage some frames on color film in the TLR.

At lunch & then this afternoon I managed to finish the 2 rolls in my ETRSi backs- one color & one b&w- that had been loaded in them for waaay too long. At least the clouds are gone for some afternoon 35 rf shots.

I've done about 4 rolls so far and a few shots on my digital as well. I am resting now but I think I may leave in a while and take the digital and a macro and head to the arboretum for some close up work. That should round out my day! I think I got a few shots worth something.

Here's a shot I like. I was taking pictures of the birds for a while and then I finished my roll so I sat down to change film. One bird decided to do an inspection and hoped up on the bench right next to me to check me out! I guess I wasn't her type and she flew off but not before I got this! :p Not bad for not even looking at the camera and shooting at the hip as it were.

I only had time to shoot one roll so far after work. It was about 0 degrees and raining so I took the Zorki. I'm not sure if all of my shots turned out ok. About mid-roll, the shutter started to sound a bit different. When I finished and took the film out, I checked out the camera. I feared that perhaps one of the curtains was stuck or something. I fired a few dry shots looking at the curtains and everything seemed fine and the shutter seem to sound normal again.

I'm grabbing a bite to eat now and I am hoping to shoot another roll or two before the end of the day.

I managed to get outta work an hour early and go downtown to shoot. I managed two rolls of TriX with my GSn, then my thumb started to freeze up.
I might have an image or two that are worthwhile, time will tell. Managed to get hit on the arm by a woman I took a photo of as she passed by me. No harm though, she was laughing when she did it.

Going out for pizza now so might get a few more shots in.

The weather in Wisconsin today was dreary and made shooting less than enjoyable. It started with cold drizzling rain and progressed to warm thunderstorms. In between I was able to get some shots, but nothing like I had hoped. The digitals were okay, hopefully the film shots are better. I might sneak out when its dark and try some more.

All your "equinox days" seem better than mine:
less than 30 photos took mainly while riding my bike to and back from work. Some shots in the office (2 of a collegue watching out the window for the spring to come and 2 of my monitor with Kully's photo "spring" on ... Kully hope you won't upset!!!), a couple of shots of my friend Mr. Flick lightned with a projector with a slide he shot in Venice .... I'd like to shot at night, there was a wonderful moon and light but I had some boring boring and boring accident :bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

Brutal project going through work now, so I didn't have much time. I did get in a few shots on my way in, at lunch, and on my way home. Hopefully a few will come out OK.

I had scouted a few places over the past weeks, but was unable to get to some of them because there was no place to park close thanks to the snow, and no time to walk any distance. We don't usually have much snow this late in March, but I guess we are paying now for the mild start to the winter around here.

A disappointing day for me. It started well -- I had some domestic things to take care of this morning, cooking and whatnot, and got some shots of that. Then had a pub lunch scheduled with my family and intended to go outdoor shooting for the afternoon.

About 11:00am I began not to feel too good and by pub time I felt like cr@p. I kept thinking, this can't be real, not on solstice shooting day! Alas, I sent my family to the pub without me (I can't even describe the psychological pain of that) and snoozed in a chair. Snoozed most of the afternoon, woke up around 5:00pm, and felt marginally better so I went for a walk to see if I could salvage anything of the day.

By the time I got out it was really dark, grey, and ever so lightly raining. No sunset shots, no interesting light. I wandered about anyway and took a few things here and there. I think I got just enough to salvage some of the day, but it wasn't the day I'd anticipated.

Frank: Wasn't much fun for me, either, today: lots of things conspired against my taking my cameras and "disappearing" myself for about six hours or so. It was more like an hour and a half, with a head full of nothin' and two cameras full of film. And yet, the opportunites came forth, and I think I'll have a few things to post that I pretty much like. To quote the tagline of some or other big-screen "Star Trek" production, the operative words were: boldly go.

I shot five rolls. It was a chrome day only.
(in order) Velvia 50, 2 x E100VS, Provia 100F, Provia 400F. In the am, it was a little overcast, the sun came through. I shot landscape in the am, and in the afternoon, I shot street. It rained in the afternoon, mix of clouds and light. I did meter my shots in the am (very little aperture priority). For the afternoon, it was aperture priority, thus making it faster to shoot. I think I will have few good ones to show. It was the first time with the Velvia 50. Looking forward to seeing the results. My camera I used was my F3HP / 24/2.8 combo. No motor drive. I used my 28 very little. Processing will begin tomorrow. I did find it hard to finish the last roll. I have not done shooting this many rolls in a long time. I am tired. Good night!

Finally managed to get out this evening (after 14 hours at the office) and shoot a roll in the wet dark alleys. The GF and dog came along, so I expect there will be a few of them, and some good texture shots.

I'll try to process and scan this weekend.

Didn't shoot a lot but I'm hopeful that I'll have a couple or three worth sharing.
I did have a bad moment when I thought I'd put the yellow filter on the camera with the Kodachrome:eek:
But that turned out to be me simply being dumb. Or up waay to early in the AM.
Going to be a little while before I get the two rolls back.

As mentioned earlier, I took ill around noon today and wasn't able to get back out until after 5pm. Nonetheless, I was able to put together a few shots from the day. My theme was more 'a day in the life of' than anything else. Some domestic stuff in the morning and finally a short walk to the harbour and along the evening streets of Port Credit.

I shot digital today, and have posted my better shots in a Flickr set:

Checking in ~

Despite the rain and general gray dreariness, it was an enjoyable day. No, I didn't get as many photos as I hoped and certainly not as many people shots. I spent a larger than desired amount of time waiting for delayed appointments, driving across town for changed appointments... okay, I'll just say it. I twiddled my thumbs, burned my gas and chased my tail most of the day. There. Some days are like that.

I shot with Zorki.1c, Zorki.1d, Leica.III, Olympus.digi and my phone.cam. Thinking back, I doubt if I got one shot that will rise above the crap category, but I really don't care. It still transformed an otherwise dull, busy day into quite amusing just trying to get anything that came along on film, floppy or fone.

One fun moment was seeing the face of a waitress as I explained my reason for taking photos in the diner today is because "I'm participating in a global project to establish a photographic record of the equinox... just for fun, of course."

"Uh huh. Well that's innersting. You do won't s'more cawfee, don'tcha hun?" ... then giggled all the way back to the counter.

She was a doll.

Gene: That (begging off a pub visit!) bites ... hope you're feeling better today.

I had a fairly decent day. Many of the locations I had scouted for my route didn't work out. Note to self: Scouting on a Sunday when business is not ticking along yields a way different impression than shooting during a work day. Hmmm.

So my locations did change somewhat. I think some of my shots will be somewhat decent (I shot all film so we all have to wait!) ... and the last few I think will be very nice. I was sitting down on pavement shooting close in on some bicycle locking standards at the new Port of Rochester facilities at the mouth of the Genesee. I was using the Zuiko 50/1.4 wide open, and the images in the viewfinder, at least, looked good. When I went to get yup, yowza!!! My lower back left side gave me a very emphatic "Take THAT you old man!" ... I managed to get up and get to my car, but just moving into the car seat made me yell in pain. So, I went home straight away; I had planned on staying out for another couple of hours.

The back is fine now, so I guess I have to go in to work. :(

As previously noted I arranged to partener with a local service agency - "Interfaith Hospitality Network" - that helps homeless families transition to more stable living environments. This includes temporary housing, education, job placement, etc. The agency arranged for releases and promoted the idea to their clients, staff and partner agencies. The director and I worked out the schedule of locations and shots.

I went on-location with each of the 6 client families as they made their way through the day - from 6am wakeup at the shelter/day-house to 9:00pm apartment move-in for one family. 500 digital shots (D70s) - 250 film shots (M6). I'm too pooped to edit until later...
