If you're curious about women photographers, listen to this piece on photographer Dare Wright in the NPR website.
Her name wasn't familiar at all... From what I heard in the interview with her biographer, Wright started modeling and after she picked up the camera she turned her energies into doing photographs for kids. Her books were recently reedited and she shot the covers.
