View Full Version : Kodak processor on M8
Can anyone advise if the processor on the M8 is a 16 bit as it is on the DMR digital back for R8/9 (and most other professional digital backs)?
Most DSLR processors are 12 bit including Canon full frame models I believe.
The Sony CCD used with the Epson RD-1s is also 12 bit.
I believe that the tonal range capable with the DMR is largely due to the 16 bit capabilities of this processor and yet I have read nothing about this with the
M8 CCD.

The Leica tech data says 16 bits per color.

OK I have checked the M8 specs and yes they do state that the DNG Raw images are 16 bit per colour...........a diiferent way of specifying than that used for the DMR.
If the depth of tonal range in the M8 images is anything like those of the DMR then we are in for a real treat! I am at Leica UK tomorow so I will try to get more detail about this rather important part of the spec.

Yap, all medium format backs are 16 bit, so is R digital modul, so are all other SLR digitals 12 bit (nikon, canon and the bunch) :)

What?! Nobody's going to complain that the extra 4 bits are for "cult cameras" anyway?
I'm already drooling, though. Better go back to scanning my film...must not get distracted... :bang:
