Black chrome for me - when covering the red dot it's easier to match black tape to the black chrome than it is to find silver tape that matches the silver chrome.

If today's silver chrome had more of that iridescent colored sparkle that one sees on an M2 or M3, the choice would be tougher, though.

I was going to go chrome because it wears better when you have a magnisium or aluminum body, i.e. no color contrast........ but now I find out that the M8 will have a solid milled brass bottom and top plate. The black chrome starts to look like a nice option since there is nothing quite as nice as a golden brass patina showing thru a black finish.

Also, I have grown fond of older chrome lenses on my black RD1.

Judging from my 50-year-old Hasselblad rig, "chrome" will last longer. My black Hassie lenses (all much newer by definition) show plenty of "patina" otherwise known as wear.

I chose black on "stealth" and aesthetic reasons and because I don't expect to live another 50 years. BTW, the "M8" and red Leica button on the front will get a cover of black electrician's tape before the thing makes an appearance on our friendly streets.

I ordered a chrome M8, then my supplier indicated he could get me black M8 a few weeks before chrome. I went for the black, and I'm kind of happy that I did. I loved the retro look of the chrome, but the black really grows on you. Wonderful camera no matter which one you opt for. I'm thoroughly enjoying my M8 so far. Black is beautiful indeed!

grduprey
03-18-2007, 19:21
I have both of my R cameras in the Black Chrome, and it holds up every bit as good as the chrome. And I have not noticed any problems with smudging from fingers or from my face. Same with the new M8, the black finish is top drawer all the way, but I do wish they had made it black paint instead, as that black paint finish is sure pretty. ;-)

Gid
03-24-2007, 14:14
I originally voted for black and my first two were black, but obviously they are less reliable than the chrome one I now own :) I have to say that chrome really looks good - looks much more M like than the black and works well with any colour lens.

I feel for you guys that are still waiting. I put my name on the dealers list in January (I had managed to resist until then) and got one within a week. The second was delivered by Leica within a few days of the first dying and the second was also faulty so I returned it. When I finally had a rethink I phoned the same dealer and he had a chrome one in stock which was delivered the next day. Maybe one of the benefits of going with a less well known dealer.

Chrome will show less finish wear over time. The black chrome (going all the way back to the M5 and M4 bodies that were first black chromed) wears through to an underlying coating of plating that is more or less bright chrome in color. When the bright chrome finish wears, the result is the same but less obvious.

In the 60s/70s black had a pro image , so everyone wanted one , so for me , especially with so many plastic cameras in black , it's got dee-valued .

I remember when discussions ran rampant on pnet on whether Canon's white tele lenses were superior to Nikon's black ones. What with white reflecting more sun light and therefore less susceptible to heating. Apparently someone at Nikon noticed, as a small selection of lenses is now available in both liveries (70-200, 300, 400 & 500)..

I guess you could have the decision on black/chrome sway on that criterion too..

Hi Wes! I got the black chrome M8 today, and kind of wishing I got the chrome. I like the chrome finish on my M3 and my former M7 better, but ended up getting black because all my lenses were black and thought it would be easier for resale. First impressions of the M8 are somewhat underwhelming, but I've only had 1/2 an hour with it before work.

I don't own one yet but my MP is chrome and my M8 will be Chrome. I want to take pictures and look at it. I think the statements above are a bit ingenuous, you spent $5000.00 and you don't care what it looks like? Is that suppose to imply that you have so much money that something like color is not important or your Art is so important you just have no time to worry about small things like the color of a $5000.00 camera. Do you buy your clothes the same way. I want to wear them I don't care what color they are. Give us a break. How pretentious.

Black is cool. Chrome is classic. I bought black but I often think I should have bought chrome. With chrome people are more likely to think you have an old camera which is not a bad thing. I am sometimes stopped by people to talk about my camera and I have the M8 covered up. They are all camera people who know Leica. But can be a bit of a bother and when they find out it's an M8 I have a lot more questions to answer.

I voted for black - but like many I do deep down wish I had gone chrome - only because i have CV lenses 15, 21 and 25 in chrome. Black lenses on a chrome body see look look decent - chrome lenses on a black body not so decent.

Though I wish the M8 had been done in black paint as opposed to black chrome. Something about a Leica in black paint over black chrome.....

[QUOTE] ...My artist friend (painter and muralist, knows zip about cameras) saw my M8 over the weekend and was fascinated by its "minimalist bauhaus look"...

Unquestionably, a beautiful set-up! I have on order a new Silver/Chrome M8 simply because of the more retro look of this old classic design. Like’ many other members, I’ll order a Luigi case to extend that appeal. No doubt, this camera body begs to be unique in the flood of more high tech designs from Japan. Who knows, perhaps I’ll even give the skin a different look. It’s fun, it’s personal and above all, it’s a passion we all seem to share.

I dont think it matters a f*rt on that ole' M8 heap, that thing will be out of firmware upgrades and faulty battery chargers let alone out of fashion when the next chip comes along. I think its hilarious that half of you would spend five grand on it and then stick voigtlander lenses on it. Id've thought that the image was what you were after, not the look of the toy..

The chrome is considerably heavier brass construction the black is lighter made of some alloy. The brass dampens the mechanism down a little bit -audibly and vibrational, especially noticeable on the M6 and MP. That M8 sound like cracking sticks in a bag followed by a wheeze.

Good luck to ye all in two years the thing is replced by the next hiccup cough and a f*rt..

I love the way the chrome looks (and I like attention! haha) however if possible I'd want a black one as well so when I get the urge (and cajones) to do some street photography I could do so with more ease

Personally I like the way chrome lenses look on black bodies. Must just be me. Hehe.

Can someone post pictures of chrome lenses on black bodies? Maybe a huge chrome lens?

What's a Leica. And, I love my little black Olympus EC I just scored on the internet. Its quite well done in black enamel and makes the camera elegant for a $10 auctions score.

I now have a crome M8 , though I could have saved £300 on an ex-Leica demo camera . It certainly focused on my reluctance to buy the black ...

Nothing to do with elegance etc - my ASdee is happier in blissfull 50's style !

i have black M8 body.
i think an old used black M3 looks very nice, an old used chrome M3 looks like broken.
Although i prefer chrome lenses.

But i guess, black or chrome, they all make pictures.

Well I didn't vote becasue you don't have the choice that fits me. Which would be BOTH.
Which one do I use more? Right now that would be the chrome one as there is a glare in the RF patch on the black one and I'm getting ready to send it in for repair.
When the black returns it will be used more then the chrome until the shot count comes closer to the chrome. Then I'll switch between the 2.

Not exactly on topic but I recently got a Panasonic L1. Apart from being much cheaper than the Leica equivalent (dare I say Leica "copy") my view is that this camera at least looks much nicer in black than the Leica one does in chrome. As for Leica M bodies they both look great. Balck or chrome, I would not baulk at buying either - mind you in the case of the M8 I might baulk at the price.

I would concur with this. My black M8 has definite signs of wear after a year of use. On the right side of the top along the edge where my hand rubs against the camera there are signs of the black finish rubbing away. Eventually the underlying metal is going to show through. Similarly it's relatively easy to mark the black finish.

No such experiences with the chrome M8.

beware, black & chrome lenses are optically different.

chrome lenses are usually better

black ones are of lesser quality.

You may not be "just kidding". I have five (5) Leica lenses, 3 Black and 5 Chrome. The 3 black ones all have focus shifts, between 8mm and 35 mm when tested wide open at very close range. The chrome ones are both dead on, so the thought has crossed my mind that chromed lenses are better made.

I held an M8 in my hands yesterday for the first time. Compared to the M7, it felt bulky and awkward. IMO, Leica should have built in a modest grip similar to that of the Hexar RF. I voted for sticking with film - for now.

If I was in the market (too dear for a pensioner;) it would be chrome,
stays looking new longer and easier to keep that way.
I've never ever understood the cachet of a brassed black camera, looks professional? Nah! just looks knackered  unobtrusive? still looks like a camera:rolleyes:
Funny long ago, the black was the cheap option so newspapers bought them to save money!

They could always do one in white vitreous stove enamel as Ilford did in the 50's that wouldnt cook the film or the sensor ;)

A PINK LEICA? Should the black satin case have lace trim or not? The custom case makers are going to have a field day with this one. After all, a proper camera shouldn't be seen in public wearing the same outfit two days in a row!

I ordered a chrome. it is my second RF camera after a short 2 month stint with the Epson RD1s in mid 2007 (i sold it).

I had originally wanted to buy back a RD1s now in 2009 but was worried about the perpetuality of service.

I had been apprehensive about spending on an expensive cam with all the problems you read about in here in the rangerfinder forum. But I found this discount programme in the UK (I am from Singapore) giving a cashback of 650 pounds. After 15% VAT deductions, I am poised to purchase this circa of USD3000 with 7% GST (Goods and Services Tax) in Singapore, inclusive of shipping and insurance.

I just called the dealer in the UK and he confirmed that I got my M8 in last night's shipment and it is a black one.

I voted for the chrome and ordered a chrome but I changed my order to a black more for more stealth and conspicuity like many have said. Fortunately, they had enough blacks to send one to me.

Now the lens choice inssues.....:(

Had a silver M4, black M6, etc., so decided on a compromise with a panda this time. It wasn't the silver knobs that got me, but the finish. More paint-like than the standard M8. Same price though. Got mine at Kurland last week. They still have a few in stock. Liked the 8.2, but difference of $1500 is a leica lens or a handful of cv lenses.

I ordered mine in black paint.

Mine is an M8 in black chrome. Paint I would have really loved, but I own a black chrome M5 that's as old as I am, and it aged very gracefully, see here. http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2950/chinonmemotronceii.jpg

It's in the back in this shot, the black is turning to grey where your fingers go. Someday my M8 will look like that too:)

curious to know what people think about the original black M8 vs. the black paint M8.2 (but not quite enough to start a new thread).... any opinions out there?

Hi guys,
don't buy new M8's. For example here: https://www.leicashop.com/vintage/leica-mkameras-c-1000_1003_100347.html, you can find mint M8s with warranty for about 2300 EUR.

Currently, they have a black AND a chrome version, both are 1 year old....they update their website every month and get new cameras every month. Yes, LeicaShop is much more expensive than ebay or many different leica-selling sites, but this one is REALLY, and I mean REALLY reliable and fair source.

If they write 'mint', the body really is mint. A=new, A-=almost new (like package was already opened), A/B = very very small signs of use....

LeicaShop is the professional official Leica dealer for Austria...

How many lenses can you get for 1500-2000$, that you save....?

If you just use the leica.com website, you can find many official Leica shops also in U.S.

I mean, for 4500 EUR you can buy an 'almost new' M8 and 2 superb lenses....

I was in the LeicaShop yesterday and had a look at the M8's, they have only 3 really tiny scratches (like 0,25 mm long) at the bottom - that are not even scratches, you'll see them only when look like from a 5 cm distance...

Does anyone know what the ratio of sold black to chrome M8s is? Looking back on the M2-2-4 era when chrome was most common and black was odd we now have a situation where black M2-3-4s command a premium. I wonder if in 30 years chrome M8s will encounter the same fate: a premium because most buyers today chose black.

Al Kaplan
04-27-2009, 03:55
Most likely all the M8 bodies will be in a landfill someplace. A skilled machinist can always make a gear or temper a spring. Replicating an electronic circuit, not as likely. Those few that are left will be painted white with exotic snakeskin coverings and only fondled on the third Thursday of the month.
